Why have Styx mid chart peak not stood the test of time?

Postby Toph » Thu Mar 01, 2012 1:06 am

Looking at Styx's single list and there are 17 top 40 singles (if you count Sing For The Day @ 41). What is interesting is that a lot of Styx's mid chart singles have failed to stand the test of time. They aren't played by Styx and they aren't played by Dennis in concert and often they aren't included on any best ofs and/or compilations. And you never hear them on the radio. Journey, meanwhile, has a lot of middle of the pack singles that still do pretty well to this day (i.e. Anyway You Want It, Still They Ride, Send Her My Love, Girl Can't Help It, After The Fall, I'll Be Alright Without You, etc., etc).

Think about this - when was the last time you heard one of these?
- Mademoiselle - Peak #34
- Sing For the Day - Peak #41 - Ok, yes on Pieces of Eight Tour, but before then?
- Why Me - Peak #26
- Nothing Ever Goes As Planned - #54
- High Time - #48
- Music Time - #40
- Love At First Sight - #25

Why is this? Why have these songs been lost in obscurity? I don't expect Styx to play a lot of them because a lot of course are Dennis songs, but why doesn't Dennis bring out one every once in a while. Why doesn't he do "Love At First Sight" for example? Why has "Why Me?" never been played live?

Would love to hear some of these in a lost treasures show...

Dennis doesn't play these because he has a 2 hour set list as it is (when he headlines). And unfortunately the average clueless concert goer wants the big hits.

Also, he is never going to play "Why Me". Nobody in his band plays horns that I know of. And he's not going to travel around with a horn section just for one song.

"Love At First Sight" would be a great addition to Dennis's set.

Goodbye To Roseland would be good live if he does not already do it ....... Has he ever played Crossing The Rubicon live ?, another of my faves ........ I would love to see a DDY show with orchestra doing different songs like Lonely People and Ballerina, give me them songs over Babe and Roboto but as already stated the hits are what people want ....

My local rock radio station only ever play Come sail away and Renegade.
The last 25 years their music list has pretty much stayed the same.
Same 2 Kansas songs,same 2 Black Sabbath,4 Deep Purple,4 Loverboy,6 Pink Floyd,1 ELP,
4 Genesis,1 Lynnard Skynnard,you get my drift.
Then there are the heavy rotation bands like AC/DC,Zep,Beatles,Stones,Guess Who,Tragically Hip,Aerosmith
Van Halen and such.
I am sick and of hearing the same shit over and over, and the heavy rotation bands I don't really care for any more.
Needless to say,I raaaaaaaaarely put on that station, though this is the era that I like (70es/early 80es),and the bands I like, they play the
same Fukkin songs.
Thankfully the i-pod was invented and I have my own radio station. No commercials,no yappers.
17000 songs on shuffle.Halleluja.
I would love to hear most of the songs you mentioned and even slip 2 of those in to a concert.
Jesus loves you ,but everybody else thinks you're a knob.

I'd love to hear why me. The local tribute band plays a part of it every now and then and i think i'm the only one in the audience that knows what that song is

good question toph but allow me to speculate.......i totally agree about mademoiselle.....that is one of the great forgotten styx tracks.

sing for the day was done around 2000 or 2001 on the tour with billy squier and bad company

why me i would agree is not played because of the horn section being so needed.

nothing ever goes as planned i would say once again due mostly to the horns

high time because honestly i think both styx and dennis realize its a fairly weak song and may have fit the kilroy theme but not what folks would want to hear now.

music time i could see dennis doing that one but even though it charted i dont see him dropping one of his signature song such as suite madame blue or something to add that in because for the most part i think almost no one remembers that song.

love at first sight i believe was performed on the edge tour when i saw them in 90 or 91 and then i think dennis did it when i saw him solo in nashville about 5-6 years ago so i think it is brought out and dusted off from time to time.

Nobody remembers Music Time for a reason .....it is the most forgetable Styx song ever ....along with Cold War and Eddie

Everyone knows that song when it's played. Every time I go see "Light Up", the crowd knows every song, they're the Hard Core Styx fans that follow this local band around. When they play "Why Me" they have the horns in the keyboard settings. I'll have to look at the dvd I have to make sure.

Exactly. With 21st century technology, don't think you'd need to cart a horn section around with you. But even so - why not do it at an orchestra show?

I blame timing for some of them. The order they were released and lack of promotion by the record company.

Which show? The one at IMH inside the huge beer tent?

Listen to 94.5 tomorrow morning at 7:30. They'll be playing 2 songs from Styx. Here in Milwaukee they play a lot of Styx on the radio, 4 stations for sure. I usually request "Suite Madame Blue" and it's played on WKLH. 94.5 plays "Lights" for me too :) I'll have to request "Music Time" and I'll let you know when it's on!

Those songs are very dated and have just not stood the test of time. They are really never on the radio and have simply been forgotten.

Dennis isn't going to perform them because he has stated he wants to give the fans what they want....and he NEEDS to do that or people won't go to his show. He is doing enough stretching out on his set list and playing it safe keeps people buying tickets.

Styx is the same way. I can't see them adding any of those songs.

The Journey songs you mentioned HAVE stood the test of time. They ARE on the radio and people still know them. However, you don't get "Walks Like a Lady", or "Stay Awhile", and some of those that you did mentioned are hardly ever performed in concert. People threw a fit when "La Do Da" was added. Also, Journey did not hit the charts much until Escape...Songs like "Line of Fire", "Where Were You", "Winds of March", and "Patently" were concert staples even into the Escape tour....but are not now for the same reason Styx/Dennis do not perform their songs - they are forgotten relics that most people don't care about and would rather hear a hit.

Thats a very good question. I have often wondered this about many bands such as REO Speedwagon, The Cars, and even Journey. Its weird how radio stations favor certain songs over others, while sometimes the songs they dont play, had higher positions on billboard. For instance with REO Speedwagon radio seems to never play "Keep the Fire Burnin" a great top ten hit, but sadly forgotten. For a top ten hit not to be played on radio...thats a crime in itself. REO Speedwagon's ballad "Sweet Time" another decent song that was a top 20 hit, but never played on the radio. How many times do you ever hear "Show me the Way" from Styx on the radio? I hardly ever do. This was big hit for them in the 1990s. What about the mega hit band Chicago? Most of the songs that were huge hits in the late 1980s are hadly ever on the radio and this is a band that has sold over 130 million worldwide. "Look Away" which was song of the year and hit #1 on billboard, "I dont want to live without your love" #3 hit, "Your not Alone" #10, and "What Kind of Man Would I Be" #5.

Now, what about Journey. I can start with "When you love a Woman", massively successful song nominated for a grammy, and it hit #12 on the charts. The only time I hear this great song is on satellite radio. Amazing this song is not played that much. How about "Be Good to Yourself" which hit #9 on the billboard charts and I cant even think of the last time I heard this on mainstream radio. What a shame. Fortunetly I do hear "Send Her My Love" #23, "Girl Cant Help It" #17, "Only the Young" #9, and "ill be alright without you" #14 occasionally. Out of Styx, REO, Boston, and The Cars, Journey does get more airplay for their top 20 hits because they were much more successful than all of these bands. Journey has more songs that have stood the test of time, have more exposure, larger fanbase, and their songs are played on movies and tv shows. Look at the state farm commericial with Anyway you want it, lots of advertisement for Journey. You have to remember too Journey were HUGE and still are pretty big, 80 million in record sales is very impressive. Their greatest hits sells over 300,000 per year and they had a platinum record as recent as 2008. With that said, its something that seems to happen with every band, more so than others.

Great insight.

I would offer there are even quite a few Styx top 10s that don't get the airplay these days. You mentioned Show Me The Way, but also I'd add Don't Let It End, and even The Best of Times. All three of these songs were huge when they were out, all three were part of the top 100 songs for the entire year that they came out and now they are clearly on the verge of being forgotten (doesn't help that the current members of Styx are actively trying to make all three of these songs - plus a few others - disappear). Journey's record company is still behind their catalog - Styx's just really doesn't give a damn.

Yeah, you may have hit the nail right on the head. With Journey being one of the most successful music acts ever and one of Columbia records best selling music acts on their label, they are definetly going to be behind anything that is related to the Steve Perry Journey.

That's because people want to hear it. The Styx songs you mentioned most people don't care about. They sound dated and out of place on the radio, and even in concert.

As for 'getting behind the catalog'. There is only so many times you can repackage the songs. Yeah, they can release GHII but how well did it really sell? People buy the original GH...not the new one. What really helped Journey was Herbie continuing to manage the catalog even after ROR...to get releases on soundtracks and such to keep the catalog "evergreen"...also credit Journey for writing songs that still sound fresh beyond their musical era.

Styx has released their back catalog in so many compositions that people like you whine about it and blame the band every time a compilation is released. There really isn't a market for their back catalog any longer...which is why oddball labels get the releases. Then, much of their catalog is 70's Progressive rock, or 80's ballady sounding.

One other point...Styx has also had its share of soundtracks and TV bits. DDY was even IN a movie, a celebrity sing-along with Dennis Sparks sing "Come Sail Away" with Dennis, the "Mr. Roboto" comercial, "Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto" on one of the Autin Powers movies, Pinocchio singing "Mr. Roboto" in the extras in one of the Shrek DVD's...and you get their BTM, which was just as controversial as Journey's...and Styx' was even update. And, of course, the "Improv On Ice", Dennis doing the PBS tour a while back.

The point is: Styx hasn't exactly disappeared the past 12yrs or so. So, they are out there, but for a select set of songs that people want to hear. Journey is in the same boat...but it is easier to go outside of the dozen GH's.

Everytime you post you sound like an idiot. People do want to hear song like best of times show me the way and don't legit end. Maybe you don't. But plenty do.

And, THESE are the songs YOU mentioned:

Think about this - when was the last time you heard one of these?
- Mademoiselle - Peak #34
- Sing For the Day - Peak #41 - Ok, yes on Pieces of Eight Tour, but before then?
- Why Me - Peak #26
- Nothing Ever Goes As Planned - #54
- High Time - #48
- Music Time - #40
- Love At First Sight - #25

So, you are such an idiot that you don't even remember the songs you posted and are now completely changing your point.

Those songs are not performed OR on the radio much because they are dated, and sound dated, and people have moved on and forgotten them.

The songs your weirdo mind just came up with I *DO* hear on the radio...well, except for "Show Me the Way". And, Dennis performs them, which again, goes against your original point.

Do you have some kinda split personality where one of them doesn't remember what the other just trolled about?

I am very blessed to have FIVE classic rock/oldies radio stations in my city...and I listen to them constantly, as everything else out there is nothing but dreck. On those 5 stations, the only Styx songs I hear in constant rotation are Too Much Time, Blue Collar Man, Fooling Yourself, Renegade, Come Sail Away, and The Grand Illusion. Occasionally, I'll hear Lorelei, but that's it. I never hear anything else. Conclusions: those songs have best withstood the test of time, and the Tommy songs have held up better than DDY's. (*ducks*) As far as the mid-chart stuff goes, I think it's just like anyone else's catalogs: most fans-- the casual fans-- just want to hear the big hits; those are the ones they are most familiar with. Look at Springsteen. How many hits has he had? And yet radio only plays Born in the USA and Born to Run. Me, I'd rather hear The River, Hungry Heart, Jungleland, or Tunnel of Love.

I think you also have to look at radio today. Back in the day, the DJs played what they wanted, including complete album sides, B sides of singles, and there were a lot of request shows. There was so much variety, so much to choose from. Nowadays, it is so corporate; playlists are compiled by a conglomerate, rather than a DJ who knows his city and his listeners. Hell, Styx themselves got their break by being liked by WLS and being played by them; would that happen today?

I think songs are mid-chart for a reason; they didn't do well enough on the radio or in sales, so they were dropped from live shows (and radio) and forgotten by the band and fans alike. During the peak years, once Mademoiselle was played out, it was dropped and replaced by another song from a newer album, and so on. Now, what makes one song a "classic," and why doesn't that apply to another song? Look at Blue Collar Man. Didn't that hit #24? That would qualify as a mid-chart song, and yet it is a classic, where Why Me at #26 is forgotten.

Sorry for the long-winded rambling......
Sometimes it makes no sense at all.

You could also look at the fact that a song has to find some kind of niche in order to stand the test of time.. Most of those minor hits leaned towards a more pop side of Styx, and if a song doesn't reach the top 10 or 20; as far as pop music goes: here today, gone tomorrow(and as mentioned above, sometimes even a top 10 hit fades into obscurity). So, if a song doesn't reach that feat, it can either be carried by one of the other formats(rock, adult contemporary) become a live staple, or fade away. Outside of "Love At Frist Sight", none of those tracks are really a/c oriented either; so..
It's worth mentioning, though, that some of the most popular songs from Styx only hit the bottom half of the top 40- "Blue Collar Man" #21, "Fooling Yourself" #29, and "Lorelei" #27.
