Interesting insights from JY as to why life the road is not right for everyone http://www.examiner.com/classic-hard-ro ... evil-wench

Thanks, I hope all is well.

I am sure this post will soon turn negative when certain individuals arrive :)

Just he really went off in this musical theater thing and that was clearly his priority. [Fellow Styx guitarist] Tommy [Shaw] and I play in a rock and roll band. We want to tour a lot. We want to do a lot of things that are affiliated with that. We don’t want to take time out after waiting 13 years to get this thing back together after breaking up in ’83.

Translation: I'm just about dead broke and need to tour to pay the bills.

So we just have a brand new group of guys that have found the joy in being on the road," Young said. "Where there are some people who just aren’t cut out for the road and Dennis is one of those guys. He really didn’t like being out there.

Translation: We found some other guys who are just about dead broke too. Dennis clearly was too smart with his money, didn't snort anything up his nose, and didn't have one or three costly divorces, unlike the rest of us.

Well, JY is really quite unlikely to be anything remotely resembling broke. He's always been good with money. And JY is married to the same woman he's been married to for about 40 years now.

You're thinking of Tommy, not JY.

Seriously...it always turns to them Vs. him. God, give it up already.

Styx wants to tour. Selling albums these days does NOT make you dough unless you're Rhianna or Gaga.
If Styx (or Dennis- or pretty much any classic rock band) were to put out a new album, it would sell to a few thousand of their hardcore fans, but it will not make them as much money as playing shows. This is why they're not doing a new album, and them not doing a new album is why I won't go see their shows anymore. They tour because it makes them money.

Having said that- DeYoung ALWAYS hated the road. This is a well-known fact from Dennis and anybody else that surrounded the band. WHY then when this is reported in an accurate way, do the Dennis DeYoung cheerleaders portray it as something it's not? I don't get that at all. BANDS TOUR TO MAKE MONEY. BANDS MAKE MUSIC TO MAKE MONEY. If you think it's "Ooh, man, we gotta bring it to the people" you're a dope. This is their J O B. That is why they tour non-stop because that's where the money is.

Not sure why that is so hard for people to get. Also, Dennis now gets to tour as much or as little as he wants. He gets to write his own music and do whatever he wants. So does Styx. Why is this a bad thing?

Their performances (on both sides) are killer performances. So Gowan's not Dennis. Well, August isn't Tommy. So what? Neither camp is out there slamming the other in their shows. Gowan doesn't get up and say "Here's a sucky song Dennis wrote" or anything like that. He seems to have a lot of respect and grace when referring to Dennis. Granted, in interviews JY should be as classy, but the one quoted above, he's right on the money and does not denigrate Dennis at all. What's the problem?

I see things are kinda lightening up a bit now, nice things being said. I think we might see a reunion actually 4 years from now.

I spoke too soon... Unfortunately, if u read the entire interview, young does get a bit douchey. Jees, take a lesson from Gowan, he answers every question with class.

How is this the high road?

"It’s very significant material and defined us as a rock act, before Dennis decided he had to become a full-blown McCartney-esque balladeer."

Not necessary.

It does seem that JY might have a little more anger to process than the others. I'm not going to judge because I'm sure he has his reasons. It's his life, and he has a lot on his plate. I wouldn't be able to keep his rigorous schedule and hold that band together for a year, let alone for thirty-five+ years (many will argue that was never a large role of his, but they are wrong there). Add to that the health issues his wife has had these last few years...ugh. Let's just say, I admire his strength. A lot. I too agree that "things" seem to be lightening up, for the most part, in all the camps - which is great, regardless of the outcome. Growing up with these guys makes them a family, of sorts, and I like it when this 'family' is content and relaxed, not harboring resentment and stress.

To add to the Gowan showing class comment: Gowan is one of the nicest and classiest people there is. I doubt he has ever even had anything negative to say in PRIVATE, let alone publicly.

By the way, that was a great read. He's right: The show does sometimes make it all worth it, but the aches and pains associated with leading up to it are sometimes more than a normal person can deal with.

I may not be JY's biggest fan, but I do agree with you here. JY has played a big role behind the scenes in some of the day-to-day stuff and always has IMO That is/was the strength of Styx - everyone brought something to the party. And what a lovely dysfunctional family we all are :)

He's the only band member I've actually never interacted with but everyone to a person has had nice things to say - seems like a genuinely nice guy. Whether you like his voice or not or feel he's an adequate replacement for DDY or not, I maintain he always comes from a standpoint of respect. For awhile, I thought it was Glen, Todd, and him who had more respect for the DDY-era than TS or JY.

Way to go, JY. Now you've added Paul McCartney to your growing list of people who are more successful than you that you feel it's necessary to spew bile towards. Last time I checked, McCartney had more talent (and class) wedged under his left pinky fingernail than JY has exhibited since 1981 or so. JY sounds like a pissed-off high schooler who was jilted by his prom date, not a 60+ year old man who has learned to accept things and move on.

That's in the entire article, not the excerpt that Sterling posted. I thought the same thing, then the entire article became available.

He has an inferiority complex, big time. Hell, I think that almost any musician would if they had Dennis DeYoung on one side and Tommy Shaw on the other side of them on stage for a significant portion of their life. He's the distant weak link of the three "front men"

yeah, there's gotta be something there for him to just not let it go after so long. He'd fit in really good here...
