Why Don't Radio Stations Play Re Recorded Songs????

Postby Everett » Sat Aug 18, 2012 1:22 pm

Just wondering why. Is it their own rule or what? BTW no one liners like
"because they suck thats why" are needed. Just a question I have. That's all.

because there is really no true need for them to do so.......radio stations are in the business of playing songs to make money.....they make their money from advertising.......the only reason artists re-record songs is to give them the control of using the song in whatever fashion they see fit and to own the publishing......so if the re-recorded song gets used in a TV ad they make more money and ultimately they control what ads it can be used in.

radio stations are not involved in that game and therefore are only interested in giving their listeners what they want to hear and the reality of that is that 99% of them want to hear DDY singing come sail away and steve perry singing dont stop believing and lou gramm singing hot blooded not the replacement guys regardless of well they sing the re-recorded track.

As a former "now retired" radio programmer Masque is right. 99% of the audience wants the original version. I remember sneaking in "Lady 95" and getting hell for doing so. It's the same reason you don't hear many "deep cuts". The majority of the listeners want what they KNOW.

Although I think it's worth noting that ever since the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" CD, I have heard the live version of Hotel California everywhere to this day... I'd be hard-pressed to recall hearing the original on the radio in over ten years. I've tripped across the occasional other example, too. It's happened a couple times, but it is few and far between.

Do you ever listen to 96.5 WKLH in Milwaukee, they do. They have played DDY re-recorded Styx songs and they also have played the newer Styx re-recorded Styx songs and of course other bands and musicians. :)

They usually play them by request on special nights or when a band or musician is coming to town. They'll play their "new" version.

What DDY re-recorded Styx songs are referring to? The only studio re-recorded Styx song that Dennis has done outside of Styx that I am aware of is the orchestral version of Grand Illusion that was on the "Dennis DeYoung Ultimate Collection" CD. Unless you mean the live recordings on the orchestra CD. Just curious.

Yes, his live versions I heard and it's fun to hear them on the radio. DDY has always been a favorite guest on 3 radio stations in Milwaukee. When he comes to town he use to do a lot of radio interviews. I was able to videotape in the studio while he was on the air. It was great to watch behind the scenes and we kept taping.
