The Grand Illusion Live CD

Postby Boomchild » Sat Mar 23, 2013 9:09 am

I just picked up this CD and was wondering if this is from the rumored Live recording that was done and never released by A&M. According to the insert it was recorded in Chicago to use as a promotion for GI album. It also states that the recording was licensed from Universal which now owns the A&M catalog. Anybody know anything more about this?

I don't THINK, 'cause I think they played Wilderness on that tour....but don't take MY word for it...I'm not really good with Styx boots, surprisingly.

Around $11. Throw in shipping and it's about 16 bucks total.

Well I know back around 2004 or so they were supposed to release a Grand Illusion Deluxe Version via Universal. A double disc set and the 2nd disc was supposed to be a live disc from that era but the band nixed it. Never understood why would love to have a proper remaster and a good live show, nonbootleg from that era.

To the best of my knowledge, no at least at this point. I bought mine off ebay and it was a seller in the UK.

When you get it let us know if its the real deal or not. Let us know how the cd booklet is laid out, if it mentions A&M etc. thanks I'm curious about this.

What get's me with these old shows is that they are so short. They were headliners
at this time. What gives?

They weren't headliners until the Main Event tour in 1979.

Actually, Main Event was in 78 and the name of the tour for Po8. Grand Decathlon was in 79 for Cornerstone. Main Event was the first tour in which they fully headlined.
Sometimes it makes no sense at all.

No, Main Event was the tour to support Pieces of Eight which came out in fall of 78. That tour was mostly in 79. The Grand Decathalon was the tour to support Cornerstone and was in 1980 as Cornerstone came out late 1979.

Styx actually got a headline shot late in 1977 in St Paul at the old St Paul Auditorium. I am 95 % sure that it was there and not at the St. Paul Civic Center. This was in support of The Grand Illusion. I am also 95% sure they were the headline act and drew around 6500 people. My parents wouldnt let me go.

Late that next summer( August) they came back and were the headliner at The Minnesota State Fair. They were supporting Pieces of Eight with their Main Event tour. New England was the warmup act and the concert which I did attend was AWESOME!!!!!!

I ordered this awhile back when I first saw it; nothing new althought some have discovered it later. I haven't opened mine yet but this is not a sanctioned release. (Un)fortunately, there's a lot of grey/shady releases that are making their way into Europe and South America at the moment. Good for fans, but not necessarily good for business for the bands. I mean, the horrid cover art is a clue. It's not a '77 period photo to begin with ... but I digress.

many times the old shows that were originally relased on vinyl were not the "full show"......time limitations of vinyl almost always resulted in live albums having songs omitted that were actually played live.

and this "CD" is likely a remaster of an old show that was recorded for vinyl release or a time specific radio show.

My copy arrived yesterday. Never have gotten anything this quick from amazon. I owe something like 64.75 Euro whatever that means. To receive this so quickly from overseas amazes me. NEVER have I received an order from amazon this quick. Makes me wonder??????

As for the actual recording its really in my opinion nothing more than a good quality bootleg. I have to crank my car stereo way up to 39 or 40 to get average sound. When I do this on a 'real' CD my speakers would be jumping. There is no real CD booklet it just states that it is one of their best live recordings ever. Says when and where its recorded, from their Grand Illusion tour with the orginal lineup.

Ive pretty much heard all of these recordings before. Its almost like different live shows are dubbed into one CD. Suite Madame Blue is EXCELLENT and is worth the price of this CD if 64.75 EURO is less than $ 25 real dollars.
