What's your favorite version?

Postby ek88 » Fri Nov 14, 2003 11:29 am

Well, with all the various releases through the years, we have some Styx (or Styx-related) songs that have appeared numerous times. Of these various forms, which version is your personal favorite? Here's mine:

Lady - Greatest Hits (much better than the original)
Come Sail Away - RTP (love Tommy's solo at the end)
Blue Collar Man - POE/GH (I've always thought the keyboards have more bite and sound a lot better on the studio version)
Renegade - POE/GH (don't like how they seem to drag this one out live)
Grand Illusion - Arch Allies (love the power behind it)
Best Of Times - CITA (like the live ending much better than the fade out in the studio version and prefer this one to RTP version)
Crystal Ball - toss up between CITA or RTP
Mr. Roboto - KWH (didn't think it sounded real sharp on CITA)
Babe - Cornerstone/GH (great in it's original form)
Brave New World - BNW (terrible live)
Love Is The Ritual - Styxworld (ten times better than EOTC)
A Criminal Mind - Styxworld (sorry Gowan, but the Styx version blows yours away)
Rocking The Paradise - tie between RTP and the studio version (awful on Styxworld)
High Enough - Damn Yankees version all the way!
Everything Is Cool - BNW (simply because I've never heard the live version from Riverport and refuse to shell out for the couple of extra tracks mixed in with THE SAME ONES from Arch Allies - aaarrrgghhh!)

Okay, I know that's not all of them, but I've listed the ones that came to mind first!

EK - agree with a lot of your choices...here are a few more comments

Lady 95 - Tommy is on the recording
Mr Roboto - CITA, love the audience reaction to it
Renegade - RTP...Todd's drums are awesome on this one
Blue Collar Man - POE all the way here
Love is the Ritual - EOTC..tough to produce those vocals live

Wish they would have released the GI anniversary live version of Show Me the Way with Dennis singing (no instruments) brilliant, also Queen of spades live...

Lady '95 - (kicks the original's ass)
Come Sail Away - StyxWorld (Gowan reminds me of everything I miss about Freddie Mercury)
Blue Collar Man - POE/GH (studio version - all the live version have botched lyrics)
Renegade - POE/GH (Dennis's scream before it kicks in = Heaven!)
Grand Illusion - Arch Allies (Decent but Gowan carries his voice too long in some parts)
Best Of Times - PT (I'm too used to the studio version)
Crystal Ball - CB (Tommy's studio debut - unparrelled)
Mr. Roboto - KWH (overproduced...that's why is sucks live)
Babe - Cornerstone/GH (great in it's original form)
Brave New World - BNW (haven't heard it live yet)
Love Is The Ritual - Styxworld (brilliant and extended!!)
A Criminal Mind - Styxworld (Styx gives this song the much need boost)
Rocking The Paradise - Studio version (I can't stand this song live - Gowan butchered it and DDY sounds like he's straining on RTP)
High Enough - Damn Yankees version (if only StyxWorld would've had the ENTIRE song...)
Everything Is Cool - BNW (haven't heard the live version either)

Also, I'll add that I think Kevin Cronin does a better job singing Styx songs on AA than Tommy does with REO songs!

Lady- The ORGINAL is by FARRRR the best version!!
Born For Adventure-The live King Biscuit Version- Styx opened their show with this CLASSIC and Dennis or the song NEVER sounded better!!
Suite Madam Blue- Caught In The Act- Dennis is super live on this song.
Crystal Ball- Tommy's 1986 live version with his band( Girls With Guns Tour) playing in South Bend Indiana- His missing verse is added and it, and the ENTIRE song NEVER sounded better!!
Edge Of The Century- Styx's Live 2000 version(Perspectives) with Roboto added in the middle.
A Criminal Mind- Styxworld version
The Grand Illusion- I like Gowan better singing this song. It's the ONLY Dennis led Styx song where I like Gowan's version better- Arch Allies
Heavy Water- Arch Allies- I really like the Put Me On intro leading into this GREAT song.

I've gotta say that I love the Gowan versions of Come Sail Away and Grand Illusion 100x better than the originals. Styx rocks with their "criminal minds"!

I really don't mind Gowan singing Lady and Grand Illusion so much, but I have never warmed up to his vocals on Come Sail Away. Didn't care for RTP on Styxworld or the bit of Queen of Spades in the medley. I'm sure he's sang some others, but I haven't heard them!

Have you heard the I-Tunes version of CSA? By far it's one of my favorite, along with Fooling Yourself. Very raw, yet fun.

Believe it or not, this one didn't bother me as much as comparing Gowan to Freddie Mercury. I take back whomevers post I said was the dumbest post of the year.

Why is this such a problem. Gowan has the same type of showmanship and vocal range as Freddie Mercury (and, IMHO, is a bit more likable).

Don't knock Freddie Mercury - he is my all time favourite vocalist. Brilliant singer - and a fantastic person (very likeable)
