I bought 45s first, because they were cheaper. I was a kid in the 70s, and had no income! My first Styx 45 was Renegade, even though Fooling Yourself the previous year had gotten me into the band. When I began babysitting, and had my own money, I then branched out into albums. Pieces of Eight first, then Grand Illusion, then Crystal Ball and Equinox. By 79, I was able to buy albums in consecutive order, and I no longer bought Styx singles. Except, to my surprise, one day when I was going through a box of old stuff I'd left behind at my Mom's house, I discovered the 45 for Roboto. What the hell??
I remember 45s and albums being equally easy to get, as both were sold in record stores. Actually, as I think about it, 45s may have been easier to get as I recall some grocery stores carrying 45s, but not a wide selection. Usually just top 10 hits. When I was buying records, 45s were $0.99 and albums were $8.99-$9.99, with double albums being $12.99. I remember when 45s went by the wayside in favor of cassette singles--and damn, was that a dumb idea. I never bought one of those.
Sometimes it makes no sense at all.
