This is the first footage I've ever seen from the 78-79 Main Event tour. Does anything else exist?

Why is there so little footage of Styx in their heyday?

I always heard it was because of their manager, Derek Sutton. He had a severe mistrust of the media. Seems I read somewhere that Tommy and JY wanted to film concerts, but Derek nixed it. As far as fan footage goes, remember the 70s were vastly different in terms of technology. Cameras were big and bulky and were not allowed onto venues. I used to sneak in my Kodak Instamatic, but pictures came out crappy and you had to watch out for ushers who would see flashes and comfiscate equipment. Movie cameras (followed by camcorders) were really big and bulky. I think it's criminal that there is not any good footage from the 70s, besides the Winterland concerts that have surfaced.
Sometimes it makes no sense at all.

unfortunately, now you go to concerts and everybody, en masse, lifts their cell phones and watches concerts through them. Ridiculous! I went to McCartney last year and was in the 4th row. As soon as he came on, everyone lifted their cell phones. Totally blocked the view. Ugh, silly humans.

We can only hope that venues get wise and tighten up on the no photography/

Went to see Crowded House (I think it was),a year or 2 ago.
The guy said,'you can keep your phone out for the first 2 songs, and then you put them away until after the show, alright'.
It worked pretty well. There were of course a few who 'forgot'.
So maybe that's an option.

Honestly at this point I do not see where the venues nor the artists can do much about it. Since just about everyone going to these events has a smart phone or cell phone with a camera. The only thing they could do is ban those devices in the venues like they did cameras and other recording devices back in the day. I just don't see that happening. If it was, so many people would either have their phone confiscated or get ejected from the venue.

i dont see any reason to ban any of it........by this time, most everyone knows that cell phone footage on youtube doesnt sound like a professionally recorded DVD, so most folks know the actual even sounds better......but youtube at least gives you an idea of what things will be like live and gives the band added exposure. sometimes seeing the footage of a band actually makes me want to go see the actual live event.

Exactly this. While footage on youtube helps (especially for people suffering from withdrawls of there favorite
band like me 8)). There's nothing like being at the actual event. Hearing the artist say your town etc It's always
better to be at the event then to rely on crappy (sometimes) youtube footage.

Ban it because it's bloody annoying behaviour. I'm not talking about filming performances, I could really care less. I'm talking about people who watch the entire show through their phone AT THE SHOW. Ridiculous.

Only bag phones allowed at concert venues.

Sounds like something that our current government could sink their teeth into.

Personally I don't agree. Your dealing with performances of copyrighted material owned by these artists. They have every right to control how it is used and where it is made available. Just as it could have a positive effect for the artist it can have a negative one. Some people record the whole performance and put it online or even worse sell bootleg videos of concerts. There is such a complete lack of respect for artists these days. There's a whole generation now that think music should be free. No wonder some artists are not so enthused about releasing new material. The split second they do some weasel uploads it to the internet for it to be obtained for free.

i dont disagree at all with your point, and I am fully respectful of artist copyrights........so my point, for me, as a fan, is that youtube doesnt stop me from buying an album from an artist or going to a concert or buying t-shirts......for those that it does prevent it from doing then that is not good, obviously.

but i think that more affects an artist in a negative way when their new album "leaks".....i dont think cell phone footage of a live performance from a concert ever really has that big of a negative impact on ticket sales.....when van halen got back with DLR and hit the road the ticket sales were massive, many venues sold out, yet most of those shows were also on youtube. for me as a fan it only whetted my appetite to want to see them more. i think the overwhelming amount of artists agree with this logic or you would see all of those cell phone videos taken down from youtube. many artists actually encourage nowadays or certainly dont mind it happening. some do, and I respect that.

now back to albums........"leaks" i 100% agree negatively impact record sales.......however, I am one of those people that have have some of those "leaks" handed to me and I will admit, I listen to them.....when the new van halen album leaked and it was offered to me I took it without hesitation......HOWEVER, regardless of how much money I think the artist has, I think they deserve to get paid for their product, so when the album was released I bought it.......why? I didnt have to, but as a musician myself I dont want people stealing my music either......my willingness to listen to the leaked van halen was just out of pure excitement and years of anticipation for it to happen......i think the album was good, but it was no 1984 or fair warning.....so even though I wasnt blown away with it, i still felt obliged to buy it and to support the artist.......it's a shame when folks wont pay for new music and I do think that it's wrong and hurts the artist, but I dont feel that way about cell phone footage from a live concert. the video and audio is obviously not "pro", so as a fan, it's a novelty to me at best. I want the real thing, whether it's being there myself or buying the pro shot DVD.

just like when styx went out on the GI/POE tour......i watched every second of those shows on youtube before I was able to go see the show myself on two separate occasions. but even though I saw it on a crappy phone, i still bought tickets two different times, a shirt once and a blue ray........the youtube stuff had zero impact on my buying choices.

However, not everyone thinks the same way as you. Some go as far as to admit they don't go to shows anymore or as much as they did because the can view it online for free. I wouldn't say that I have an issue with someone uploading a clip of a song or portion of it. But there are a lot of people that upload the entire show. Not all of it is footage from cell phones either. Some are from actual digital camcorders that have good picture and sound. If you are doing for your own private use I don't think that is as bad. But to me uploading it is another story. The internet and how people use it has dealt a major blow to artist's incomes. In some cases it has also helped. Then the there is the whole other discussion on how annoying people can be with their phones at concerts.

The fact that most people view music as a free commodity has all but killed a lot of the music industry. It's not the slow death of physical media such as CDs and switching to online; it's the fact that people feel they need to download it for free and not compensate. Why should an artists spend even $1 in a studio let alone $100k+ on an album when no one will pay for it?

That said, there is some vintage Styx video out there :) Most of it uncirculated. THey were very protective and it's unfortunate. There's enough stuff for a box set or so of video and audio, but it would never see the light of day.

Allan.....at this point why do you feel the limited stuff they have will never see the light of day? i know they didnt film much because of their manager etc...... but if you say there is some stuff or enough to do a box set I dont understand who would be standing in the way right now that would be against releasing video or audio from 4 plus decades ago?
