The Message/grand illusion
Lady
Lorelei
Blue Collar Man
Roboto
Too Much Time
Babe
Renegade
Rockin The Paradise
Show Me The Way
Best Of Times/A.D. 1958/ The End
Foolin Yourself
Prelude 12/ Suite Madame Blue
Crystal Ball
Come Sail Away

Can't win with either band in terms of setlist. At least with styx you don't have as many technical problems
as they did last night. Probably shoulda went to see reo but it wouldn't have made a difference.
I digress i suppose

I'm surprised you even went when you don't even care for DDY. We couldn't believe it when we saw you there. You should have went to REO. I was glad you weren't sitting in the middle to start trouble again!

I went at the last minute. Good show but tech difficulty sucked. I wish he would play more deep cuts or raritys but still a good show. I always try to see him when he is up my way. Never know when he may say "that's it I'm done".

Why do you go see DDY? You clearly have nothing good to ever say. As far as set lists, his blows XTS's away. But then again, you are going to go to cause trouble. Did you boo Roboto again? Glen should have kicked your ass.

He usually sticks to the standard set list at the festival shows. I think at most of these shows he has about 90 minutes to play, give or take. I'm hoping he'll do another type of a "Lost Treasures" show. Also, at some gigs, the promoter sometimes requests/asks for certain songs too. That's when you might hear the newer ones.

Has Dennis EVER played Call Me? Also, has he EVER played Cross The Rubicon? That may be one of his or Styx's best songs ever. FANTASTIC!!!

Everett -

Lets see, you get every popular song ever recorded by Styx with DDY (exception of DLIE which sometimes doesn't make the cut). Styx gives you 3 out of the 8 top 10s. Styx hardly gives you the Greatest Hits. DDY does. Styx thinks more in attendance would rather hear Sing For the Day.

And, people like you complain about what they are doing now. And, you all complain when they do more of the 'hits'. So, everything they do is wrong, and no matter what they do you won't see it as 'right'. Styx should just keep doing what THEY want to do.

i can name about 40-50 styx songs I would rather hear in a live setting over "Babe", "Roboto", or "Dont let it end" and that would be true whether it was current styx or a dennis live show.

But, here's the deal, and I know this is shocking to someone as sell absorbed as you....you aren't who they want to cater to...they need to target the people who know the band for its hit records - the mainstream fan. Because there ain't enough masque's out there to fill up an arena - even with another band. (Have you seen the attendance #s of this tour thus far....quite disappointing...)

There is a reason why Journey is more successful than Styx. Their fans make jokes about the dirty dozen, but it sure works for them.

Dennis plays the Styx dirty dozen. The cover band does not.

but even with dennis playing the dirty dozen and touting it as "the music of styx" he has less attendance than styx does.

and here's the thing that may shock someone like you......the average classic rock fan probably has heard "renegade", "blue collar man", "come sail away", "the grand illusion" and "lady" on the radio far more times than they have ever heard "babe" or "roboto" or "dont let it end". because the first group of songs were not only played alot back in the day and they are pretty much the only songs by styx that still get regular rotation on classic rock radio with maybe adding too much time in there.

songs like babe, roboto, dont let it end and best of times have been forgotten by radio and i freaking love best of times. so the average fan going to see styx these days has heard grand illusion 50 times on the radio in the last 20 years and probably has not heard roboto 5 times during that same span. so to me, the current version of styx is actually probably playing the songs that cater to the true classic rock listener more so than just sticking to the "hits"....because some of those hits had no staying power.

and overall this argument is so tiring because the reality of it is that they regardless of what songs they play they have found a way to stay in demand enough to tour over a 100 dates per year playing the songs they want.....i have a friend who runs a large regional sound company and was involved in having styx play a small town in KY during a weekday night as a crossover date........they got paid 65k for that small show simply because it fit into their schedule in between larger shows.

so even if they never got paid more than 65k for a show that still adds up to grossing 6.5 million on 100 dates for a year......not including any merchandise sales.....which is almost all profit.....so that adds up to be a pretty viable business in my eyes. so at their age to still be grossing in the millions and playing the exact songs live they want.....sounds pretty good to me in spite of haters like you that claim they should cater to a specific crowd.

Masque said it all so well....but I have to reply because of your Journey BS.

Journey sells tickets because they hired a singer who could mimic Perry...and then they released an album in that "legacy sound", added a rerecorded GH, and a DVD, and had a platinum album. Add in DSB being played everywhere you turn, and people have Journey on their minds.

If Styx had done the above, you and/or others would have constantly puked the opinion of the band being a farce all over this forum. And, it may have been justified.

And, as you well know, Journey is NOT performing a strictly "Dirty Dozen" set so far this year. So, your comparison is a bit misleading or a simply lie. You even replied to that thread saying you won't go to the show because of the songs they are playing.

Your last line about Dennis playing the 'hits', is laughable since he sells less tickets then Styx. Your such a hypocrite.

Styx is doing what they want to do and are happy and making a living out of it. There is no reason to do what some displaced fans want, risk not making a living, and maybe not even being happy doing it. Your advice is just bonkers.

If Dennis DeYoung had the name STYX and was touring as STYX, he would have significantly more crowds than if Tommy Shaw and JY were touring as the TS/JY band. You clearly don't understand the power of a brand.

Styx had 2 gold singles. Roboto and Babe.

Styx had 7 singles that peaked in the top 8. All were written and sung by Dennis DeYoung.

Those are the facts.

Ah, so it's not what songs they play that sells tickets - which you said a few posts ago - it's the name "Styx" that sells.

Funny how the facts cause you to change your story.

So what? The Grateful Dead had how many hit singles? How successful were their tours?
Led Zeppelin had how many hit singles? How successful were their tours?

As Masque posted...fans of 80's pop songs are not the audience that Styx is playing to. They are playing to classic rock fans. Those are also the facts. And, according to YOU, it is the name Styx that sells tickets, not what songs they play. As long as they don't go and perform nothing but obscure songs, their attendance will remain basically the same.

The funny ting about this whole conversation is that it doesn't matter. We're talking about people that are has-beens in the music business. Their part of the few that lucky enough to have people willing to still pay to see them perform. The attendance thing doesn't really matter. The current Styx will simply draw more due to the advantage of being able to use the Styx name. Actually, you have to give credit to DDY for being able to continue on without being able to use the name in the same way. Few artists that have been in the same position have not been able to do that for as long as DDY has. Also, I wouldn't doubt that DDY could book more dates if he wanted to but it is obvious to me that he is working at the pace he wants to. He's not doing it because he needs the money that is for sure.
