Here's your summer tour

Postby Toph » Fri Feb 13, 2015 8:14 am

And the desperate attempt to reposition STYX as a "heavy metal/hair band" continues. Styx will be joining Def Leppard and Tesla this summer on a 40 date tour. Unlike tours with REO Speedwagon where they switched off as headliners, this time Def Leppard will be the headliner.

Discuss.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Styx has been on the same bill as Def Lep before. Styx really can't reposition themselves. It's a little to late in their careers to do so. Although, I believe that what JY thinks Styx was is different then reality. As far as the special guest thing, I would say that Def Lep has had higher record sales then Styx did in their day.

They have had DL before, but with someone else that wasn't considered "metal" - I guess its the Tesla thing also thrown in. Two hair bands and Styx. I know JY really, really, really wishes that Styx would be thought of in the Tesla, Whitesnake, Y&T, Cinderella, Ratt, Great White, genre. And he wants to set up these type of tours and appear on "That Metal Show" to validate their metal-ness. And that turns me off as a fan. If Styx was metal, I wouldn't have adopted Styx. The only song of theirs that comes close to being a hair band song would be Love Is The Ritual and JY didn't even write it.

Its just part of the ignoring of Dennis, Babe, Best of Times, Show Me The Way, Mr. Roboto, Don't Let It End, etc.etc. that really is trying to pull one over on people.

Styx has also toured or performed with Journey, REO, Bad Company, Foreigner, REO, Kansas, Yes, and others - including REO Speedwagon.

Instead of being a whiny bitch, maybe you should be happy that Styx can tour with just about anybody. Maybe you'll get your dream concert and they'll tour with REO again.

If "hair band' equates to glam rock, then I don't believe either Def Leppard nor Tesla qualify (neither does REO, BTW). Hard Rock in a poppy way, yes...80's glam - absolutely not. In fact, the only ones in your list that fit that are Cinderella and Ratt.

I doubt very much the JY sits down every year and decides who to tour with or decides on what shows to appear on. Implying such is just stoopid. Again, it is obvious they are going for the "classic rock" audience....that is exactly who this tour is aimed at.

It's not part of "rewriting history", it's about touring and making money...and you don't like the fact that they don't need Dennis in the band to do it.

And, if Styx goes on tour with Poison, Firehouse, Trixter, Cinderella, Ratt...you will have more than a good point and that tour would really suck...just as it sucked when Damn Yankees did it back in the early 90's...what was the name of that band with the chainsaw song? Geez, they sucked.

Styx wouldn't do anything JY would not approve of. Even though he may not be the one setting up the deals. I'm sure if doesn't like it, it's not gonna happen. I think you down play his involvement in band decisions. But hey, I could be wrong. Maybe it's all TS and is ex hairstylist wife pulling all the strings. I heard that next month she is going to be on QVC pitching the Styx jewelry line. Be sure to tune in March 1ST 3 A.M. EST! Rumor has it that when you purchase any piece of Styx Jewelry, you'll get a free CD of the remastered version of JY's City Slicker album. Retitled City Slicker - The Awesome Songs Dennis Left Off Styx Albums. QVC ROCKS!!!!!!

Isn't it their manager that sets this stuff up?

I highly doubt Tommy sets up these tours. From everything I have read, he has been bored with rock for a long time. Just keeps up with it for the sake of the band, the touring, and the money. I think that deep down, he far prefers the music he grew up with, as evidenced by his return to Nashville and the amount of things he has been involved with there.

As for this tour, I won't be attending. Can't stand either DL or Tesla. I'll wait til the fall, when they do their "Evening With" shows and tour solo.
Sometimes it makes no sense at all.

I don't think neither JY nor Tommy directly set up these tours, their management does. My reply was being more sarcastic then anything else. That said, I am sure that all final decisions are made by JY and TS. If they are not on board with it, then Styx is not doing it.

Hmm.. Tesla is NOT metal but straight ahead rock and have never claimed to be metal, Def Leppard is Pop Rock and Styx is Classic Rock. I see nothing in this line-up that sounds remotely like Metal or Hair Band.

I would consider Def Leppard along the lines of a "hair band". I think that they have been referred to as New Wave British Rock.

Tommy does get bored, that's why I know that on many of their longer trips he also drives the bus.
