New Topic - Sounds like Styx

In the interest in taking this away from Dennis vs. Tommy, let me propose a new topic. Bands that sound like Styx. Are there any bands you can think of that sound like Styx? (Solo work, Damn Yankees, JYG excluded).

Here is the classic one in my mind. In fact, when I first heard this on the radio, before they said who it was, I (and some of my friends) thought it was a new Styx song.I've posted a second song by the same act. In fact, when Styx replaced DDY, wonder if they considered this guy?

I never understood why people believe that a band with no keyboards sounds like Styx,.

It is a great album though.

73 – SEVENTH WONDER – “Inner Enemy” – Progressive Swedish metalers, Seventh Wonder, have created a familiar (yet unique) sound with the highly melodic and energetic “Inner Enemy.” Imagine Kansas on steroids with Zakk Wylde adding his signature riffs into the mix. If you’re a fan of the vocal style of Tommy Shaw you will absolutely be a fan of Tommy Karevik, whose voice bears a resemblance to the legendary Styx vocalist.

I remember that when I first heard Alias on the radio back in the day I thought at first it was Styx.

The first couple of times I heard Honestly on the radio (Stryper) back in the mid 80's ( pre internet info) I thought Styx had gotten back together.

It still sounds like DDY led Styx to me.

And once again, Monker, you prove that you cannot respond to any of my posts without some type of jabbed criticism....

If you don't think Max Bacon sounds a tad like Dennis DeYoung, then I would suggest you go get your hearing checked.

"King of the Hill" by Rick Pinnette and Oak is easily the most blatant Styx ripoff I can think of. It's pretty obscure these days but did make into the top 40 circa 1980:

The lead singer does not equate to the entire band. Styx has keyboards at the heart of their sound. In fact, there are times when the keys are flamboyant and over the top. Max Bacon was not the highlight of the band for me. Steve Hackett and Steve Howe are.

GTR was put together at a time when Steve Howe was tired of fighting the keys being so upfront in the songs of Asia. So, he and Hackett went out of there way to remove keyboards from the band. The band name itself alone sshould clue a person in that they were all about the guitar. Styx sounds more like Asia than GTR to me.

The very first song at the beginning is a TOTAL rip off of the start of 'Put Me On' .

While musically not much like Styx, the singer for Ice Age sounds a lot like DDY

'When You're Ready' or 'One Look Away' are good examples, but I think you can hear the resemblance on just about any of their songs

Well Jim Petericks new album with Marc Scherer definetly sounds a lot like Styx with DDY vocals!.
Not especially the single "Cold blooded" but a lot of the rest of the album tracks do.!

If your talking about Max Bacon from GTR he is a great singer, have a couple of other CDs he did too. But never thought he sounded like DDY. But again a great singer, just sort of disappeared.
