Will Styx ever do anything different?

Postby Archetype » Sat Jun 18, 2016 8:16 am

In 2010, they did the Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight theater tour. This was a pretty big departure from their usual greatest hits minus the ones they don't like with 1-2 other bands type of tour. Overall it seems like that tour did quite well, as did the CD/DVD accompanying it. Once it was over, they went right back to their usual type of touring, and little has changed since. No big setlist changes, no big touring style changes; nothing. Being as realistic as possible, what else can they do that would bring something interesting to the table for someone who has already seen them in concert about a dozen times?

Are you saying they might put High Enough back in the set!?!?

Frankly, I think their going to stick with the formula they have been since it seems to still be working for them.

not much really left for them to do at this point? I mean I dont ever see them going out and touring with the idea of playing cornerstone, paradise theater or kilroy in their entirety.

they already celebrated their two most famous albums with the tour you mentioned. the setlist I saw recently with them headlining had a great deal of variation. in fact, they played enough obscure stuff that i thought a casual fan may even be thinking "whats this shit, give me blue collar man"......it's great for fans like us but not so much the casual fan looking to do something on date night.

they have capitalized on touring with all kinds of bands that made a good match on the summer tour shed runs.

they have done orchestras and acoustic sets.

i think the reality is that they have pretty much reached that point where they will continue to keep on keeping on at this point.

I predict a new FULL album by 7-7-17.

5 Tommy led songs - 4 by Gowan & 2 by JY.

I will even predict that 7-7-17 WILL be the release date since it falls on a Friday.

I'd rather have come again thrown in. Hell I'd rather
have an all new album by now

But I'm still seeing them @ summerfest nxt week. There my favorite band in the whole world. Not gonna stop seeing them now especially when there this close & i don't have to rely on someone for transportation. But just sucks to sit through shitty opening bands. I HATE opening bands  8)

The last time I saw them was the Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight tour. Can't justify spending the money and time going to see them play what amounts to the same show I've seen about a dozen times. I suppose if they were playing very locally and I had nothing else going on, I'd probably go. But otherwise not until something interesting and fresh is brought to the table.

I'm telling you if everyone in the band stays healthy look for all NEW Styx material ( their final album ) on 7-7-17.

They will also tour extensively to support this album.

Lawrence did fairly recently mention the potentiality of a new original release, but he didn't seem very committal about it at all. Where's this idea coming from?

I hope they do something different soon because I can't justify seeing them again and seeing the same old show that I've been seeing for the past 10 years.

I wish Tommy would put Come Again into the set. Maybe even a couple of his solo songs . Girls with Guns would be fun also.

Why put in solo songs when there are plenty of great Styx tracks that they never play? I'd love to hear Love in the Midnight, Midnight Ride, Just Get Through This Night, Lights etc.

Wow, that's cool. I just checked out setlist.fm

Their set is actually better than anything they've done in quite a while. So the answer is fewer package tours.

It would be cool to see them dedicate maybe 1-2 months per year to a theater tour. Keep it interesting for the fans and probably for them as well. Play 20ish songs and have a lot of audience interaction/solos/etc

Is that an actual set list or a wish list? I would go just for Christopher, Mr. Christopher.

They should settle in at a theatre in Branson, Mo. Next door to the Osmonds, Ray Stevens, Dolly Parton, etc. A lot easier than traveling the country and you can play what you want.
