The first time I listened to "With All Due Respect", I liked. It this nice rock song, nice cool rhythm, nice guitar riffs, etc. I think the beginning is kinda stupid with that yadda yadda woof woof crap...but the rest was pretty good.

But, honestly, it just doesn't stick with me. It's not something I really care to go back and listen to. There is one article that compares it to Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry"...and it's a good comparison since they both are critiquing news media. But, "Dirty Laundry" doesn't just critique the news, it also asks people why they are watching this crap? Is it because it's being delivered by a cute blonde? Is it because you love the celebrity gossip? Do you like the drama of death and grieving? All Dennis is saying is the news media is a bunch of assholes. And, that's about it.

So, watching/listening is basically repeating, over and over again, the news media are assholes. So, it becomes "meh." very quick to me. Then I watch the video and the people in the chorus seem to be looking as much like assholes as the news media they are insulting. Then Dennis is being himself and acting all camping and dramatic...and that doesn't help much. The video has become something I really don't care to watch more than a couple times.

I know it's supposed to be all jovial, and fun, and almost a tongue in cheek joke. But, for me, it stops being that way after a couple times. Then it becomes a bunch of people calling another group of people assholes...and it's no longer fun.

Dennis said in one of those interviews that it is kind of an extension of a lyric in "Borrowed Time". But, "Borrowed Time" had more depth to it, a bit of a story - in a way.

"Turn Off CNN" is also comparable...but it is also a much better song with more depth, and likable.

I agree. I’d rather watch the Music Time video, and that sucks!

The actual news is just suppose to report the news. No slant, just report the facts and leave it at that. None of them do that. They are suppose to be impartial. Like umpires & referees. All they should be doing is calling balls & strikes.

Now since none of the media outlets are that way & they are all about spinning a story no one knows what to believe. It pits us against each other & it’s killing our country.

I realize this. But, you do realize "Dirty Laundry" was released nearly 40yrs ago, correct? This is a critique that has been said over and over and over again for my entire adult life. Even Dennis himself has said this is a continuation from the line in "Borrowed Tome", and he wrote about it last time with "Turn Off CNN". It's not like the line you quoted is some revolutionary new critique.

Michael Crichton gave two speeches on this subject; "Mediasaurus" is seen as a bit of a famous one. And, "Why Speculate?" which changed the way I look at pundits on the news (or on these forums) and their predictions of the future. "Mediasaurus" was written nearly 30yrs ago. ""Why Speculate?" was written nearly 20yrs ago....but both could apply to today.

Both of the above are good reads, if you are interested in the subject.

My point isn't whether or not the news media is worthy of critique. My point is that this is less than critique and more just repeatedly calling them assholes. It's cheap, easy, no brains critique. It's like Beavis or Butthead saying something 'sucks'. There is no substance to it. It reminds me of a trend in movies and TV that I call "shock drama". It is an easy way to get a reaction, but it is hollow, empty, doesn't move anything forward, and the emotional reaction doesn't last.

It’s reached a far far far different level today and I know you are smart enough to realize that.

CNN & MSNBC are be far the biggest support group the Democratic Party has going for it. Add to this the major print media is probably @ a minimum 75% all in for the Dems.

On the other side you have Fox slanting every story possible toward the right.

This is all a far cry from the bubble headed bleach blond ( coming on @ 5) trying to sell her looks for viewers .

The media today wants to be the ones responsible for the election wins & losses for their team. They are doing it all for ratings & to please their very politically motivated bosses at the top.

Nothing like this, to this degree has ever happened before. Not even close!

Conservatives have accused the "media" of having a liberal bias for almost a hundred years. Nixon attacked the media in similar ways to Trump. Conservative leaning magazines tried to fill the gap for decades. The 90's gave us conservative talk radio and Rush Limbaugh, and his clones. Later came the rise of FOX. Nowadays you have Sinclair which is an outright propaganda machine for conservatives. You also have the crazy conspiracy theory websites that are full of lies and complete bullshit which used to be posted regularly in that other forum topic. And, you have Mother Jones and Huffington for liberals. And, you have YouTube pundits for both sides.

None of that is my point.

My point is that "With All Due Respect" just calls them all assholes, repeatedly. It's not that meaningful of a song. To me, all it is trying to do is shock, "OMG, did he just call them assholes? Wow, that's shocking." Well, it only works for a few listens and then it means nothing.

Nothing compares to how it is now with the internet & the 24 hr by the minute ‘news’ cycle which for the most part isn’t news but nothing more than partisan spin to a news story. Politicians, big & small business, unions etc.... always have and always will have agendas. The media should never. They are just suppose to deliver the news That’s it. What they are doing now is trying to decide who wins elections.

Calling them assholes is 100% correct because that’s what they are. They are biased to no end when they are suppose to be impartial. What they now do has completely divided our country. It’s criminal on BOTH sides & It’s never been like this, EVER!

It’s an excellent, hard rocking with heavy guitars & great drum work catchy as hell song. The song has meaningful lyrics that are sung to perfection and it comes from an even better album.

And, my opinion is that it relies on shocking the listener by repeatedly calling the news media assholes. The rest of the lyrics are not that noteworthy or challenging. The music and delivery is fine but it is taken down by using shock drama in the lyrics. And, the video ups the attempt at shock drama to an even higher degree which makes it even less likable for me.

With all this said 'With All Due Respect' is probably my 6th favorite song off of 26 East.

Still this is a song that needs to be out there RIGHT NOW.
The entire album is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE

“Respect” is so much more. The well being of our country hangs in the balance as news becomes entertainment looking to divide us as Dennis says using fear to sell bear. So called news organizations hiding their partisan ways while cheering on the extremes to exacerbate our differences. This is very very different than Laundry. Even the title Dirty Laundry tells you it’s different.

The raves everywhere over Respect and it’s message has been a landslide of agreement in its premise and its cathartic chorus. The press that song is getting is validation of Dennis once again giving voice to what’s important.

I don't know if you are talking about "The Mission" or "Dirty Laundry". However, "With All Due Respect" has not achieved greatness. 40yrs from now, I think it will have been forgotten...not a classic like "Dirty Laundry". IMO, it will be more like "Turn Off CNN" and be forgotten in less than 10yrs.

Most were Classic Styx fans, mostly pro-Dennis but still didn't bash Current Styx like you do to Dennis. I'm not including Toph and Froy, just the others. I recently found out that a person was banned a few years ago in an argument with you. There's at least 9 people that I'm still in contact with that were on here but left.

Probably not considering the current state of rock music on radio. It’s only been out 6 days and if Dirty Laundry were released to day it wouldn’t be either. Dennis wrote a song about technology in 1982 and it’s in the culture. Apples to apples.

I don't know if you are talking about "The Mission" or "Dirty Laundry". Yes, it is critique of a song that has no more depth than calling news media assholes. It is simply shock drama...it is an easy way to get an emotional reaction. It does not take much effort to do that.

There’s no better word to describe the majority of the media pundits these days. They are the ones selling the shock factor thats dividing our country.

Calling them ( the media) cockroaches just wouldn’t of worked with the pounding drums and blazing guitar work in this song.

Maybe this could be( substituting cockroach for asshole)the Tony Montana version as the media tries their damndest to turn us into Cuba. But does Cuba even allow rock music?? Oh Shit we are now back to Kilroy

He shouldn't have to go all Tony Montana. IMO, he should have the song writing ability to comment on the subject without insulting anybody. THAT would be good songwriting.

I'm not playing games...I've said these same things in the DC topic. It's my opinion, I think it is lazy writing.

I don't know what Suite is talking about. The only person I can think of is Boomchild and he was kicked off for that Exiles forum thing, not anything said here. This topic hasn't had anything big happen since Toph was kicked off.

Suite is just looking for a reason to get me in trouble with you. If you read this thread, I know this and haven't been reacting to her taunts...just staying on topic, mostly.

Not completely true. I have said that 100yrs is his best solo album, and one of the best solo projects that Styx has produced.

I have not commented much on the other two songs. I just don't have much to say about them. But, the shock drama style of writing is something I have a peeve about and I WILL comment on it, regardless of who wrote it.

And, true, IMO constantly bringing up a reunion is absolutely ridiculous. DDY knows the answer to that. It's like he does it to get attention and/or continue the debate about why he was fired so he can rewind and tell his story yet again. Making it a constant talking point by DDY, or by fans here, does nothing but continue a 20yr old drama. Move on.
