Styx current set list

Last night Styx played 5 songs from COTC and Red Storm from the mission. They played 20 songs and over 25% of them were from the last 2 albums. This keeps all the fans happy and keeps the album sales moving along. COTC is back in the top 20 again on Amazon new rock releases, 6 weeks after it’s release!

Does this mean COTC is going to be a Gold or Platinum record soon or ever?

I highly doubt it. Those days are long gone for all the band we grew up with. But I think everyone associated with the band is shocked at how well the album is doing in today’s market.

I feel the RIAA should consider changing how gold and platinum are awarded. This isn’t the 80s. They need to adjust for physical sales to be more in line with how people buy music. Maybe 100,000 or even 50,000 physical sales should be gold. I think it would be a more accurate reflection of the industry.

They have already adjusted to include downloads and streams although it doesn't seem accurate.

Am I the only one who absolutely hates Sound The Alarm? It’s an instantly annoying song and only gets worse and worse. Tommy sounds awful in it. Almost too nasally.

I’ll concede that it’s a great live tune, but I still skip it when I’m listening to the record. It just annoys me.

Why can't the RIAA add another level to certification awards regarding sales in the U.S.? For instance, 250,000 sales gets you a silver or maybe 100,000 gets you bronze. A gold record is out of the question for so many bands now it's ridiculous... and platinum? Ha! A fricken pipe dream. This is not the 70's or 80's. Sales aren't anything like they were. I'm not saying go back and recertify from the start and anyone with albums sales that crossed those thresholds gets an award now. It would need to start from a particular time and everything from that point on. I'd start with 2009. I have no idea why, just seems like it's then I noticed albums that debuted at #1 or #2 still didn't end up going gold. Not even close. More than 100,000 in sales the first week and after that it was difficult to get to 250,000 period. It's just sad.

They've adjusted how "sales" are tabulated for the 'modern' age but the whole point of certifications is reaching a certain pinnacle... to create lower levels just lets more join a club which was supposed to be fairly exclusive to begin with.

You do still make a reasonably valid point... RIAA certifications just don't mean as much anymore because of how the industry has changed. Imagine Dragons just received a Platinum certification for an album they released 3 years ago. Another album they released in 2012 went platinum after a year and just got a 7x platinum certification (9 years later)

Back Of My Mind by H.E.R. got a Gold record 2 months after its release. So some artists can still sell 500,000 units quickly ;)

Styx / A&M hasn't re-certified any of their platinum+ albums since 1984. Greatest Hits got a 2x Platinum in 2005.
