I know I've heard Miss America (JY's claim to fifteen minutes of fame), but it's been quite awhile. I occasionally catch Snowblind, as well.

The last time I heard JY ot the radio was about the time when Ricky Phillips joined to replace Glen Burtnick..The station was Y-95 and they did an interview with him along with three Styx songs( the stations 3:30 three fer special)... They played Fooling Yourself, Miss America, and These Are The Times...

In the interview, they talked about JY being the only original Styx member left in the band and why Glen Burtnick left the band... Two reasons, One, two much travel, Glen had higher priorities such as his family, putting his kids through school, and spending more time with them, and Two, working on a solo album...

Ya gotta admit something about JY. He is not the greatest singer in the world which is kind of the trick to getting airplay. There are exceptions to the rule but JY not only isn't a great lead singer but he also sounds strained most of the time... Here is my question. To musicians on this board.... have you noticed that almost ALL of JY's songs follow the same pattern? For example he will do a 1-4-5 and then reverse it to a 1-5-4. He does it on Shooz (the intro) Miss America (intro and verses) Great White (verse and chorus) Eddie (pre chorus) Half Penny (verse and intro) Double Life (verse) and these are the ones that pop off the top of my head. It has always driven me nuts... the equiv. of Tommy's bridges always having the vocal go up up up in pitch especially on the Shaw/Blades album. Always be With You is the perfect example of that. I do think TS broke that habit finally after DY and S/B... Hope he doesn't pick it back up again.

I dunno Gary, voices do matter, but there are plenty of exceptions to the Rule....Neil Young, Joe Walsh, Bob Dylan, and MicK Jagger all made a good career for themselves despite being Average at best vocally....and I'm sure there are others Not on the tip of my tounge.

I'm sure I'll offend a few fans of these bands, but AC/DC, Nazareth, and most hardcore Heavy Metal bands would be better off playing all instrumentals IMO.

Agreed Classic... One of the first things in my post is that there are exceptions. I will add that usually it is when the not so great singer is a very good songwriter. Not the case with our bitter, blonde leader.
