Styx, DDY, and the Charts..............

OK, it's time to look into our Crystal Ball at what the future holds......the questions ?

Will Styx / DDY / or a reunification of the 2 ever put out another Single or Album that will crack the top 50 ? If so,
which of the 3 will it be ?

I believe there would have to be a reunification for this to even be a possibility, regardless of the quality of music released by either Styx or Dennis without the other...

Frankly, even with re-unification, it would take a very catchy
song, combined with Marketing on a level not seen in 15 plus years for acts of their era.....

any other opinions out there ?

I think even with a reunification it's doubtful they would crack the charts. It would mean a massive publicity push for any of the three and I don't think any of the record companies that each is now with has that kind of clout or desire to push them.

How music gets pushed isn't that different, but that style of music definitely has a smaller market segment.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for them to chart. But I don't see it happening.

I'm with Sadie. I don't think there is much hope for any of them to chart on the top 40 charts.

Music today is Hip Hop or buble gum Pop oriented and there is only a small market for Classic Rock Artists. Other than Warrant last fall when was the last time a classic rock artist actually charted?

Good music doesn't always get recognized, and the industry as a whole has never embraced them.

a lot of money is involved too. Compaines now buy commerical spots, and play their song in that spot. One way to be legal about paying off the station. I donot remember the country artists name, but a couple months ago, her company bought peak time for a week, and her song was played every 15 minutes for 4 hours for a week. the song is hit because of it.-ERIC

The only way I possibly see it happening, barring massive promotion, is perhaps as part of a movie soundtrack a la Secret Garden by Springsteen or Don't Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith. Otherwise, I essentially agree with all the other posts here.

So, what you are all saying is that the market for Artists who peaked in the late 70's and most of whom are approaching 60 years old is a little soft these days ???

I agree, but I think the least unlikely scenario would involve....

1. A reunification...it would have to be under the Styx name.

2. A DeYoung penned "power ballad"

3. Someone in power in the Music industry with a soft spot for Styx in their heart, and the clout to pull some strings.

4. Alot of blind luck, and maybe an old Styx song appearing in a movie soundtrack of a wildly successful film at just the right time.

i wish that would happen too but unfortunately I think alot of people would laugh at styx nowadays. They don't deserve being made fun of but i know people that laugh at me because i like Styx. They are a grate rock band and always have been. If they got Dennis deyoung back it might help them a little bit but they wont get much attention from the media. at least thats what i think.

Classic rock don't get no respect, this is for sure. But the fans are loyal and, often, rabid.

The ONLY way a dinosaur rocker can get airplay and a hit nowadays is if a song catches on or strikes a chord in a broader audience. I think of how Show me the Way hit the exact right note during Gulf War I, and it became a huge hit because of that. The fact that it was a beautiful, powerful song certainly helped.

I think in any other context at that time, it might have only been a blip on the radar screen.

For Styx or Dennis DeYoung to have a hit nowadays would take all the stars being aligned perfectly and the song catching a wave of popularity for one reason or another, totally outside of who the artist is.

"Other than Warrant last fall when was the last time a classic rock artist actually charted?"

Exactly what chart was that? The Wal-Mart Top 700? Warrant absolutely DID NOT make the Billboard charts last year or any chart since 1991. And thank God for that.
As for Styx, a new album would not reach the Top 50, but the Top 100 I think so. Heart's new album got glowing reviews, and though I think it's overrated, I love that band and think it's a good album and I'm glad it got enough press to reach #94.
I think a Styx DDY album would reach #80 or so, which ain't bad considering.
Actually, "Cyclorama" got to #127 and "Waiting For Our Time" was a Top 30 AOR hit and "Yes I Can" (a hideous song) made the AC Top 30, so radio programmers (i.e. Clear Channel) still remember the band.
DDY will never reach the charts on his own and neither would Shaw or Damn Yankees.
It's a horrible world when the Top 100 singles are all Rap or country or Nu Metal or maufactured Bubble Gum, but it will all die out someday. Of course all our favorite bands will have to receive assistance in going the bathroom by that point!
