I've always wondered how subliminal the subliminal message in Light Up really is.
So, how many people here have heard them whisper "smoke dope" over and over at the end of the song?

I've always thought it was Johnny P. saying "Smoke it".

I guess it must be pretty subliminal. At this point - 43 people have read this thread and no one has claimed to have heard it correctly. Listen closely. It is there.
The line is repeated over and over at least 5 or 6 times in the background at the end of the song.
I am surprised the PMRC didn't jump all over this song.

The begining of that song ALWAYS sounded to me like the GREAT GREAT inhale and hold it as long as you can part of the act. I never listened closely to the ending of that song I will later today. Once I heard side two of Equinox, it was hard for me to flip the album back over.

Waaaay before the time of the PMRC. In fact, when Dennis slapped the parental warning sticker on the Kilroy album, the PMRC was still not in existence. It was simply a joke then.
He was ahead of the curve, as usual.
As to
Light Up I have always heard "Smoke it" over and over.
BTW, in several of his solo shows, Dennis has removed all subliminal context from that song and just come out and sung "Sweet, sweet SMELLS will fill the air."

Actually I think he sings it now as "sweet sweet sounds will fill the air"

I have just listened to a "live studio jam ' boot and before 'Light up' they say 'light up and have a smoke and enjoy'.(along those lines)
They also sing the bit 'Sweet sweet smells will fill the air.
So unless they are talking about a big fat cigar,I am tempted to think they are referring to a little spliffy wiffy.
Will try and listen to the studio album for a closer inspection.

I e-mailed Chuck P and this was the response I received:
"the lyric line simply says "Light Up
everybody join us in the Celebration"
People sometimes light up, and some light lighters
---Styx did not endorse the use of smoking in the
tune----it does happen to be one of my favorite songs
because of the Bass line-"
Either he isn't telling us something, or he just doesn't know that it is there, or he lit up one too many times back in the 70's and doesn't remeber.

You mean a song by that "untalented, former keyboard player" is one of Chuck's favorites??? Whoa! This is WAY more newsworthy than what they do, or do not, sing in this song!

I hear "smoke pot" in the fade out, one of the little inner jokes amonst a band, like the famous "tit tit" back up vocal on the Beatles song Girl.

So we've got "smoke dope", "smoke pot", "smoke it" and "smoke"
But nobody can agree on what is actually there. Most of us agree there is something.
I e-mailed Dennis and Chuck. I only got a response from Chuck and he didn't confess to anything being there.
Another unsolved mystery. I guess we will never know.

I too have heard the message "smoke pot" in the song Light Up. I recorded the album using a Nakamichi deck back in the 70's and I think the Dolby and 'eq' settings made it clearly hearable. I also used high quality TDK tapes that are still going strong!
I was sitting in the kitchen of a girl who went to college at the same school, and her parents were in the other room, and I was listening while doing my homework and suddenly I could clearly hear it. I was very surprised. I mentioned it to her and asked her to listen, and she could hear it too. I didn't think anyone else ever discovered it till I found this post. The message is undeniable. It is chanted over and over again.

the only part i'm unsure of, is smoke (pot, or dope, whatever).
it's been so long since i heard it i can't remember exactly what the phrase is other than some kind of exhortation to smoke mj.

I don't know aboot this song, but I know in Rush' "Passage to Bangkok" you can definitely hear Neil Peart inhaling one his many thousands of cigarettes right before the guitar solo.

I'm pretty sure it's "Smoke It". You can hear pretty clear with headphones on and no kids around -LOL
You can also hear the inhaling too.

LOL!!!!
Everything I do is legal, except go into graveyards on Friday the 13th, oh and borrowing cones and barricades, oh and, nevermind -LOL
Anyway, it's hard for me to listen to any type of music with my 3 kids around and their numerous friends that come around, that's what I meant. So at night at just crank the tunes in my headphones and there's no kids around, then I can hear the lyrics and music better.
If you would like me to tell you a different version, please let me know in PM
Being that, with "Light Up", if you listen close, you can hear the inhaling.
