I was thinking about how my 2 favorite guitarists of all time are Neal Schon and Frankie Sullivan, and yet how differently they seem to be when it comes to their love of making new music.

Neal Schon loves creating and playing new music so much that he will make albums that he knows that he's actually going to lose money by making. He does it because he loves creating and playing new music, and he knows it will make his fans happy.

Sullivan seems to be all about money these days.

Doesn't FS really love the blues at heart? Doesn't he express that by playing small gigs sometimes? I hardly think he does that for the money. Let's be fair.

Uhm, I can't see him running for the money actually.

Your comparison is actually very good but on another level, at least to me: Neol Schon is a symbol of musician who WANTS to remain succesfull and knows pretty well that to remain successfull you gotta work HARD, you gotta record, tour to support the CD and all this costs a lot in terms of life. Frankie, as well, knows from experience what it means at every level. I bet he loves too to create music, probably even more than Neil, it's just that he's not gonna devote anymore his life to remain in the businness.

Yeah, if FS is in it for the money, then he has a truly misguided sense of how to do business. In order to make money, you need to have a product to sell to as many people as possible. FS hasnt' released ANYTHING for several years, and when he did release "Reach", it was non-existant in US stores. And he's certainly not playing enough shows to be raking in huge loads of cash.

Actually, artists like Survivor really don't make money by putting out new music. They make their money by playing shows.

Yes. That was my reason for saying that he's out for the money. This day and age there is NOT big money to be made by Survivor by releasing a new album. Sullivan would make more money by touring, even though they don't do many shows per year.

Neal Schon is willing to lose some of his own money in order to make an album that he feels passionately about making.

Eye Of The Tiger was a mammoth hit that made an absolute fortune for Sullivan and Peterik. I've heard it said that Sullivan and Peterik could live the rest of their lives strictly from the royalties from that one song.

Then, Sullivan would also have the royalties from other big hits like....
Burning Heart
The Search Is Over
High On You
Is This Love
I Can't Hold Back
American Heartbeat
Poor Man's Son
Rockin' Into The Night

And countless other songs.

I myself have never been a money-driven person. If I myself were in Sullivan's shoes at this point in my life, I'd be looking to create new music that I would be proud of, and I'd be thinking about my legacy as a guitar-hero.

Please, Jim, please. Please start up a new project with Jamison, Bickler and hopefully even some guys like Stephan Ellis and Gary Smith.
