Since I'm the only one who brought it up, I assume you're speaking to me... I never even hinted that I subscribed to the "he faked it" scenario. In fact, I believe it was a legit condition.

I've enjoyed reading this discussion. There are some excellent points made here.

Regarding the hip surgery thing, what's it to ANYONE if NO ONE believes Perry had it done or EVERYONE believes he had done? Who cares? People are allowed to share their opinions. If someone doesn't like it, then don't read it. Can we stop with the "I have to swoop in there and take that person to task for even DEIGNING to suggest that Perry might have lied" crap, whenever an opinion is posted that is the opposite of what the Perry Troopers want to hear? So Steve Smith said "YES" when responding to whether or not Perry had the surgery? What I think he meant was "Yes, Steve Perry TOLD me he had the hip surgery," unless of course Steve was in the operating room when Perry had it done, or Perry dropped his pants to show off his scars... I'm thinking it was the first of the three choices. :D

At any rate, I doubt if Augeri will be back at all, and I also believe (ooh, there's that word again!) that a very brief statement will be made about his departure from the band and that will be that. I'd be totally surprised if Augeri DID return, even for a few concerts with Jeff at the end, HOTS. You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I don't believe JSS is a "fad." :)

Does anyone else get the feeling there could be more changes in the line-up? I don't know but I just have a gut feeling someone else will leave, possibly at the end of the tour. Obviously it won't be Neal or Jeff... but I just have a feeling someone else will quit/be replaced/whatever in the near future.

Time will tell.

I've thought of this too. I've actually had feelings that the Journey Machine may finally be put in the garage after this jaunt, pending 'The Devil wearing Ice Skates' and Perry and Smitty giving it one more go-around. I've heard rumors on different boards that Jon might leave but, being that he is one of the key song-writers of the band and one of the main reasons the band is where it is today (no disrespect to Rolie), I can't see anyone replacing him and still calling it "Journey"... unless Rolie came back. I personally think it will be this version or none in the future.

What is the obsession with Cain, he did nothing but help Perry turn this band into a sell out piec of shit ballady 'lovey dovey' bullshit poppy band. If Rolie had still been around, Escape would have been a much better album. Rolie runs circles around Cain, both lyrically and musically. That boy was on stage with Santana at Woodstock while 'Friga' was at home shitting his diapers. Get the fuck out of here with this Cain bullshit worship. Rolie is three times the musician and performer than Jon 'I love to write ballads ' Cain will ever be.

I don't agree with you on that one. Most of my favourite Journey tunes were written by him. No-one will ever know what Escape would have sounded like if Gregg Rolie had still been around because it never happened.

If you don't like the ballads, don't listen to them. Just pretend they don't exist.

I completely understand where cubby is coming from. I love E5C4P3 and Frontiers, but the soul of the band really changed when Rolie left. I do think that Journey would still have hit it big if Rolie had stayed, because they were on the cusp of greatness when Captured was released anyway.

And other people, close to the band have also said a resounding "NO!" when asked whether or not Perry had hip surgery. Even if he DID have it, I don't particularly believe it was the DECIDING factor in him not touring. I think there were other factors involved and Herbie mentioned them in the infamous interview. In a nutshell, I just don't think Perry wanted to tour at all after TBF was done. The hip thing (whether real or imagined) became the convenient way out for him not to tour and still fulfill his contractual obligations with Sony.

I remember a number of years ago, people getting in a frenzy when it was suggested that Perry used expletives. "No way! Perry would NEVER use bad words like that!" and castigate everyone who even intimated that. Now, if you go on Perryville, you'll read where Perry used some of that language during the WOF photo shoot with the ladies. Their response? It was funny, cute, etc.

If someone says Perry did not have hip surgery, all hell breaks loose. If Perry came out and stated that he never had it (which he wouldn't due to potential lawsuits), then it would be a different story altogether from those same individuals.

So there are all these bitter feeling with Steve and Neil/Jon/Ross because Steve Perry said he needed Hip Surgery???? Seems a little lame to me. There has gotta be more to it than that. Behind the Music said he was controlling. But that was before Trial By Fire.

The debates about Rollie and Cain can go either way. I think if Rollie were still in the band Greg would be singing more or at least wanted too. Steve taking a more visible role in the band caused him to leave and honestly Steve taking control gave the band more longevity. Without Steve not sure there would be so many people talking about them now. Greg just refused to see what was best for the band.......and what was best for the band was less Greg. Cain brought a lot to the band also. He was a great song writer (with Steve), Jon's song writing has suffered without Steve. I think both Greg and Jon were good for the band...at the time they had influences in the band.

I think Gregg did exactly what was "best" for the band. I think he knows he gave them the chance to become more commercial. And it is not like Gregg was singing all that much by the time Departure came out...what? A part of 4 songs live? Cain brought "commercial" success to the band. Gregg brought integrity to the band. I don't agree that Gregg is a better lyricist as Cubby suggested, but I think he was just so much cooler. The entire band had a different vibe when Gregg was in it. Cain became a tool...a tool for Perry to go completely commercial. I know I dog on Perry for ROR but really it was collaborative between Perry and Cain.

Think about if for a minute...you've just been part of a band that released Trial By Fire after a near-decade absence and When You Love a Woman is considered Grammy material. The tour that is supposed to follow the release of an album of this stature never happens. The band is unable to capitalize on the release of this new material. Perry has hip problems and cannot tour. The album goes by the wayside. That's the last anyone heard of Journey until they reformed with Augeri. You don't think that's good enough to create hard feelings?

The debates about Rollie and Cain can go either way. I think if Rollie were still in the band Greg would be singing more or at least wanted too. Steve taking a more visible role in the band caused him to leave and honestly Steve taking control gave the band more longevity. I'm not sure it's that simple. They put out some great material prior to Cain's joining the band. Of course, we know that once he joined, ESCAPE came into being, arguably one of the best albums Journey produced, with the majority of songs being written by Cain. I'm not sure it was just Steve taking a more visible role...that caused Rolie to leave. I think it had to do more with Steve's desire to CONTROL the band; their direction, their songwriting, and everything in between. Your opinions are certainly worthy of note, however it's all supposition. Rolie seemed to give the distinct impression (and Herbie corroborated this) that he was tired of fighting. He was tired of the stress and tension, which likely came down to the fact that Steve Perry wanted things his way or it was the highway.

Steve's songwriting suffered without Cain as well. There are some memorable tunes on Street Talk and FTLOSM, but it was probably the combination of Cain, Perry and Schon that made things work the best. Certainly would have been interesting to see what Journey would have become had Rolie stayed in "the ring."
