That's why it "was fine."

source? where did you see... read... or hear this?

Can't find an official source, but I'll look again. Here are two reviews that echo the general sentiment:

"Also, A LOT OF VOCAL CORRECTION in the backing vocals on Wolfie. I swear there must be prerecorded backing tracks that are triggered at his mike too. Ed was too far from his mike at times to have had that many vocal tracks."

"The background vocals were prerecorded with M.A. and Dave and I heard Dave's voice while he was flipping the mic stand around."

And here's a really classy move by the VH brothers:

"VAN HALEN STILL TRYING TO ERASE FORMER BASSIST? We recently reported about Van Halen taking out some photos of former bassist Michael Anthony from their Web site. Well, while those pictures have been restored, AntiMusic.com reports that now, the group seems to be removing Anthony's name from writing credits. One fan wrote in to the site after seeing the film Superbad, which uses the Van Halen tune "Panama." While the song is usually credited to Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and whoever the lead singer featured on the song might be, in the credits to the film, the track was only credited to the two Van Halens and David Lee Roth. AntiMusic even checked with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and it turns out that Anthony's name has been removed from the album 1984, but his name is still on other releases. The re-united Van Halen tour kicks off on September 27th in Charlotte. They'll reportedly be using pre-recorded tapes to recreate Anthony's backing vocals."

And this one:

"VAN HALEN announced the details of its long-awaited reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth on August 13. The tour kicks off on September 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Pre-recorded tapes will reportedly be used to recreate Anthony's backing vocals on the tour."

Re-reading many of the reviews and articles it seems that some shows used prior backing vocals, some re-recorded by the current act and some being live.

Maybe they tried and he didn't want to be part of it, figuring it would fail again, like the Sammy tour. Looks like he was right if that's the case.

The Ed rehab stint was a rush job...they made him look better with short term expectations on everything else...then hoped for the best...it was like getting your car painted at Earl Scheib...

Ugh, this is really a massive bummer, I was looking forward to some new songs.

At least I got to take in a great show over in Indianapolis while I could.

I knew it was going to go down. I just knew. It was too good to be true. We were back on top of the world again.

I wonder if they'll have a re-re-reunion tour in 2010 with Sam.

I'm looking into last-second airfare as we speak. Feel up to it...hopefully I can get it done. I'll take you up on the beers. Hell, it only takes me two to get ripped nowadays.

Sounds good, man. Bummer you didn't get to see them. It would be like a Perry reunion...I'd get to the first couple because you KNOW it could derail at any time. Sucks people are going to get RAPED because they bought airline tix and such. :(

Well, I'm glad we got to see them when we did. Our whole family went to the show in Oakland on December 22nd. It was one of the kids' Christmas presents. Our oldest is 21 and was on leave from the Air Force. Him and my 16 year old daughter had an absolute blast, head banging and rocking out throughout the entire show. Just watching them have such a good time made it worth the price. My daughter ended up writing an essay on the concert for English and got 100% with the comment that her review rivaled the newspapers. I think the teacher is a fan too. :D

I'm glad we got the opportunity to see them. They were great that night, and I had never seen the DLR version before. I'm sorry for the rest of the band, the fans, and especially for Wolf. :(

Hell, Celebrity Rehab is trying to fix their patients in 2 weeks. Maybe Ed can be on season 2. Fuck, I was all set to see them in 2 weeks, then they rescheduled the show for April and now this.

Is DLR EVER quiet? Dude seems to be yapping 24/7. I enjoyed his silly commentaries on VH1's I Love the 80s though.

Dan, I actually got to see the opening night in Charlotte. It was unreal - I went with five of my best friends, and it's a memory I'll always treasure. They were pretty unbelievable, and Edward was spot-on.

Dave never "talked trash" about Steve - he just made fun of Journey's affinity with the power ballad, and Perry was the lightning rod.

I'll tell you - DLR is the guy I feel sorry for right now. He has been dying for this to happen for 15 years, and it wasn't about the money. Those tears he cried that first night were real. Van Halen and Diamond Dave are one and the same.

Yup...her timing was awfully suspicious. Seemed like a well disguised way of tearing him up at the seams. I hope that bitch balloons back up to 350 pounds.

Valerie was just on the radio the other day (Mark & Brian) and said she was traveling with the band to promote her book. She said she & Eddie are on very good terms...she spoke well of him.

Sources tell TMZ the Van Halen tour has just been canceled!

We're told arrangements are being made right now to cancel hotel stays for the tour -- which was scheduled to continue through April 19th. Sources tell us the reason for the cancellation is Eddie -- that he is having "issues."

The last three shows had already been canceled. There have been reports that Eddie was out of it during concerts -- and video of recent performances in which his guitar playing was atrocious.

Reps could not be reached for comment.

Got to wonder if this has anything to do with his ex recently coming out publically and saying that she also cheated during their marrage. I'm sure that would have a negative effect on Eddie, thus the issues. Drama! Wonderful.

I wrote this in January (it's in the VH forum):

"This is what I would do. I would bring back the original lineup AND Sammy. You play 2 45 minute sets. You have each singer rotate closing the shows. You get ALL the fans of each singer and they get to rest their voices. DLR will sound like shit 10 gigs into this tour. Neither he nor Eddie are mentally stable or responsible enough to tour together. At least if DLR and EVH have a meltdown, Sammy is there. With Wolfie and DLR and EVH together, this tour is doomed. Just wait til ANYONE comments on Wolfie missing a note or completely fucking up a song. Eddie's gonna be in jail in the blink of an eye. I, for one, hope this tour is a total disaster because of what they did to Michael Anthony. And it's gonna be."

I can't believe I actually let myself believe it would happen...the new record, a few great years of recording and touring...leaving together on their terms.

Ed is back to being Edward. What a self-indulgent asshole.
