Hot Blooded - Foreigner

I'm so back into this song having just seen Blades of Glory! This is a great live version from 1981. I've never thought of Foreigner being a great live band but they're on fire here.

I love Foreigner but they always seem to be somewhat "thin" live, like something's missing. They don't sound bad but it just seems like they need something extra.

Yes - I know what you mean, Dave - even though I do think they gave it some welly in this show. No, it's not like a clip from Journey in the same year - but much better than I was expecting.

Still of the Night - Whitesnake

Live (ish) at the 1987 MTV awards. Adrian Vanderberg does a ridiculous bit of cello-synching.....

I'm not sure what it is they're missing, though. Perhaps a second guitarist or something like that. Bands like Journey and Van Halen have always pulled that off successfully, though, but who knows.

That's probably the best live performance of that song I've heard yet. I still think that is one of the greatest metal songs of all time. Who'd have thought that Whitesnake, of all bands, would write one hell of a bludgeoning riff like that. It's killer. The middle section with the orchestra is perfect to set the mood before that riff slays you again toward the end.

Thanks Matt, haven't seen that song in ages! Can anybody tell me, is that Rudy Sarzo in that clip, as a blonde..........same guy that is a brunette in Quiet Riot? Moves like him, but can't tell on this, a little too blurry. :?

Yes it is Deb. Another bit of trivia is that the drummer on the studio version of Still In The Night was Aynsley Dunbar. But he was fired shortly before this MTV appearance....

Tougher Than The Rest - Bruce Springsteen

Live version from the 1988 Tunnel of Love tour. Actually, TOL is the only Springsteen album I've ever liked. I think it's considered to be Springsteen's ROR amongst most of his fans. Interestingly (or not!) both ROR and Tunnel of Love were mastered by the same guy...Bob Clearmountain.

Thanks for posting that one,Matthew. It's one of my faves from Bruce(and the album, too).Still get its fair share of spins on my player.
LOL,if TOL is considered the "ROR" of his discography,so be it,it's an awesome album, just like ROR is.

And Bob Clearmountain is a genius. His work with Bryan Adams,Toto or The Corrs is absolutely amazing too.

Say It Right - Nelly Furtado

This is Furtado's new single and is produced by Timbaland - the biggest hip-hop producer around at the moment - which should mean it's crap. But...it sounds surprisingly 80s...like a cross between When Doves Cry and Pat Benatar. I don't love it but it's better than most pop records out at the moment.

Shania - I didn't know that Clearmountain worked with those artists as well. I must check out his discography.

The other similiarity between ROR and TOL is that both records were made in the aftermath of divorce, loss, etc - and have that melancholy feel about them. My favourite Springsteen track ever is One Step Up on TOL. Great, great lyrics for depressive moments.

I'm sure Clearmountain has worked with many other names too...I just happen to love reading liner notes and I've noticed his name on some of the albums of the names I mentioned."Reckless" & "Cuts Like A Knife" of BA are 2 of them. And he's the one responsible for the greatness of one of my all time fave albums of Toto, "Kingdom of Desire"...

Yeah,I agree, whenever artists have personal issues their writing skills seem to sharpen... Maybe that's Journey's secret for such a prolific songwriting history.
