Which bands should ....

...have changed their names? Which shouldn't?

Bloodflower seems to think that Journey should have changed their name when Perry left. Here are some groups with changes. When should the bands have changed their names?

Should Genesis after Peter Gabriel left? How about after Phil left?
Should Van Halen after DLR left? How about after Sammy left?
Should REO after Gary left? What about afetr Alan left?
Should Quiet Riot after Randy Rhodes left? Or after Rudy? Or after Kevin? Or after Carlos? Or when Kevin returned?
Should Styx after Tommy joined? Or after Tommy left and Glen joined? Or after Tommy returned and Glen joined? Or after the drummer died? Or after the bass player had to semi-retire due to health? Or when Lawerence joined?
Should the Rolling Stones after Ron Wood joined? Or when Bill left? Or when Charlie left?
Should Warrant after Joey and Steven left? Or when Joey and Steven came back and Jani left?
Should Judas Priest when Rob left? Or again when "Ripper" left?
Should Iron Maiden when Paul Di Anno left? Or when Bruce left? Or when Adrian left? Or when any of their drummers left?
Should Poison when CC left?
Should Cheap Trick when Tom left? What about when he came back?
Should Night Ranger when Alan left? What about when Jack and Brad left?
Should Stryper when Tim left?
Should Metal Church when their 1st vocalist left? What about when their 2nd vocalist died?
Should Bon Jovi when Alec left?
Should Evanescence after Ben left?
Should Def Leppard when Phil joined? How about when Steve died?
Should Queensryche after Chris left? How about after Kelly left?
Should Bad Company after Paul left?
Should New Edition after Bobby left?
Should Micheal Jackson after each of his plastic surgeries? ;) Just checking to see if you were still reading!
Should Whitesnake after HOW many different artists?
Should Aerosmith after Joe and Brad left?
Should KISS after Peter? After Ace? After Eric? After Vinnie? After Bruce? After Eric Singer?
Should the Eagles after Randy left? How about when Joe joined?
Should Chicago when Peter joined? How about after he left?
Should Dokken after George left? How about after John left? Or after Reb left? Or after Jeff left?
Should the Who after Keith died? Or when John Paul Jones died?
Should Hardline after Neal left?

The big ones...

Should the Cure have changed their name during any of their innumerable lineup changes?

Should Journey have changed it's name when George left. Or when Robert joined? Or when Robert left and Perry joined? Or when Aynsley left and Smitty joined? Or when Gregg left and Jon joined? Or when Ross and Smitty left and Randy and Mike "joined" Or when Gregg and Kevin and Smitty and Ross rejoined? Or when Perry rejoined and Gregg and Kevin left? Or when Perry left? Or when Smitty left? Or when Steve and Deen joined?

As near as I can figure, ONLY Journey should have changed their name. And ONLY when Perry left. Is that about right?

Nice pic!!
And despite what everyone thinks, it didn't take much time to type...it took more time to keep coming up with bands that fit. :)

It is called sarcassim, 28...

By the way, I noticed your REO message. "after Gary left, and after Alan left..How about when Cronin left?

By the way, dude, you know a lot about other bands..

You should ask Andrew for a job.

Yeah, I forgot to include when he left, and then when he came back.

I know a little about a lot...from a certain time frame. I can't keep up anymore...

I would LOVE to somehow be involved in the music world. Whether Radio, behind the scenes, behind a band, promotion, whatever. But the pay is crap and I don't have the time. Same reason I could not offer to moderate this board if Andrew needed help...

If Andrew EVER offered me a job as Moderator, I would do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to make it happen. This board would shine....

So true, knock off the name change whine. It's Neal's band. Foreinger is out there now with 1 original memeber. Mick. Why? It's HIS band.

A few corrections:

Charlie Watts didn't leave the Stones, but Brian Jones did die.

Terry Kath died and Chicago kept their name, although at first they were called CTA.

In the Who, it was Keith and then John Entwistle that died.. I'm sure John Paul Jones [of Led Zepplin] is shocked to hear of his demise  and Jon Bonham of LZ died. But I get where you're going

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Grateful Dead
etc.

What if Journey simply shut down because R. Fleischman was rolled? There would be no Journey for Perry to join. He would have been better off being a crooner like Dean Martin, Wayne Newton or B Manilow..That is his true passion anyway.. He is a crooner, not a rocker..

Awesome post!!!! :D :D :D

Two additions:

Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship
But I guess they did keep changing their name
Pretty much needed a revolving door at their studio with the members leaving/coming back/being replaced/replacing others!

Jethro Tull
On the 20year box set, they actually have a family tree of all the people who have been in and out of Tull throughout their career; what bands they came from and what bands they went to after.

The only constants have been Ian Anderson and Martin Barre {Barre himself was a replacement for Mick Abrahms, but has held that position since '69, so I think that counts!}

How many names could they have gone through?!

Hey, you forgot AC/DC!! (They were more popular after Bon Scott)

How about BOSTON?

METALLICA!

YES has had several lineup changes!

PINK FLOYD didn't cease to exist after Roger Waters left!

And now of course, INXS is looking for a new lead singer!

INXS!!! They had their new lead singer in jon Stevens and let him get away. I would have loved to hear what they were going to put out with him as I liked the one single, "I Get UP" that Andrew featured on the site. Classic TIm Farris riff.

Spinal Tap should have changed their name when their second drummer exploded.

Not true. They have been touring with all four original members since 2005, and will be releasing a new studio album in early 2008. The second incarnation has already lasted longer than the first.

The Downes/Payne era yielded at least two dozen fantastic songs that compare to anything from the first three records.

Additionally, they never "broke up", nor was there a dispute over the band name. When Downes approached Wetton about possibly reuniting in the late 80's, Wetton could not commit because of prior obligations, but the original three members had no problem with Downes continuing the Asia name with Payne. Downes and Wetton also continued to collaborate throughout the 90's, even though they didn't release any material.

Saw them this past summer (opening for BOC and Joan Jett) and could have sworn they said the bassist was also an original member.

How about the Guess Who? A few years ago after bassist John Kale discovered Bachman or Cummings never registered the name, he goes behind their backs and registers it. He recruits fellow band member, fat-assed drummer Garry Peterson, to go along with this and hires former Coney Hatch singer Carl Dixon and two others to pretend to be the real "Guess Who", duping fans across the globe.
