A few days ago I stated that I couldn't believe anyone would take the current Journey over the 1981 Journey.

Well, since that post, I believe that there are people who genuinely favor the new line up over the old one. I still can't believe anybody would make this decision but apparently some people have.

I'm still sticking to my guns, even though they aren't big now, about the denial thing. Am I the only one who believes 1981 Journey totally blows away current Journey???????? Who knows?? Maybe I am. To me, it's absolutely NO contest.

I still like Journey. I've seen them twice since 1998. However, I don't like them as much as I do the old band.

Here's the thing, we don't have Journey of 1981. Even if Perry were with the band we will never again have Journey of 1981. So why not appreciate the positives we DO have. A guitarists who has done nothing but get better. A good skin-pounder who can also sing very well. A great songwriter and piano player. The goofy, fun-guy bass player who holds down the bottom end. And one helluva talented singer who happenes to be an incredibly nice guy as well.

I just took Soul Sirkus out the player here at work to listed to Believe again before posting. I wouldn't rank it in the top half of the tracks on Gens but I do like it. Neal smokes on the wah, its different but musically really good. I think Steve's lyrics and ideas were good, but I do feel that it gets repetitive and think it could have benefited from more time and work or a little help from Jon lyrically. The mini jam at the end is really cool.

I agree that Steve has some good lyrical ideas and imagery, but he really would benefit from more of Jon's input. It seems the Steve Augeri songs are a little repetitive lyrically, Jon could flesh them out more. And it is my impression that those songs Steve wrote, he wrote himself for the solo CD so I don't think Jon did to much "to" them.

My problem with Believe is the repetitive piano "riff" throughout. Some people complained that you could not hear enough of Jon's keys on Generations and the ONE song that his keys really stand out on sounds terrible!

Yes, I wonder if there was a effort to leave "Steve's songs" as they were, or if they just didn't have time to work on them more. Of course they did rehearse for several days before recording. I think that if they'd spent just a week or so more writing and polishing, not necessarily any additional time recording, this could have been the best Journey album ever, imo anyway. I agree about the piano riff, it bugged me from the start but I guess has grown on me somewhat.
The piano riff on To Be Alive Again actually had to grow on me a bit too, for some reason it reminded me of the Peanuts theme, or some music similar to that, I don't know why, it probably sounds nothing like it.

Both of those albums ARE great.
Butterfly is almost good, but like Believe, it succumbs to tedious, drawn-out repetition in the end.
I also think the accoustic and electric guitar don't gel on the song. Sounds muddled. Buttefrly might have sounded better done entiriely on accoustic.

I'm for that. Some great rockin, raw, bluesy stuff there. A great album. Steve sounded a little rough there four years after Tall Stories, probably went from not singing at all right to recording Shine, its amazing how far he's come since then.

That is what I am thinking. That way we would not be able to say Steve didn't bring "much" to the table. He has credits on Arrival but they are pretty much overlooked.

100% agree. I am all for energy and chemistry. But Journey did rush this CD some. Thank god Steve got the excited, but I wish they would have given it a litle more time.

Interestingly, the repeating piano riff on Believe kind of reminds me of the "right on ruby kid, right on ruby kid" lyric.
I think that's the only repetitive thing I've found in his pre-Journey work.

I agree with this as well. There is definately more edge with that song. it turns some people off because it sounds very little like Journey, but that is what is cool. It should sound a little different. The best thing about Steve on Generations is that he is singing with HIS voice and it is obvious that his influence is on this CD.

Journey is on the right track. I wish they were not taking a break.

Just want to clarify that I like the song, just that the piano lick had to grow on me. I think that could have been a big summer time hit for Journey, another huge missed opportunity. Has a good time feeling about it kind of like Stone In Love.

How can Out of Harm's Way and Better Together not be on someone's top 5? Those are great songs.

There ya go! There is no need to stress on recording...these guys can rehearse a little and knock out a solid recording (instrument-wise). They need to spend a little time writing together...jamming it out. Know that it is a Journey CD, but no other limits!

There is not going to be a lot of touring next year so there would be time to write and record.
