Benchmarks

This thread is for those of us who live in sanity, current day Earth.

Arrival 2001 DVD was a turning point for the band. To me, they put the thing out, to show people that Journey has in fact turned the corner, and is pretty damned good. This showed fans that there was life after that lead singer, or whatever he was called....I believe they did this 3 years or so after the awful TBF era,in order to fine tune the band and get some new material out to the the public.

The DVD sold well, and the public was reassured.

Fast Forward to April/May 2006.

Journey now IMO, solidifies it's fans who they brought with them by releasing "Journey Does Dallas." This DVD will entice the fans to stick with us, and anticipate the future.

These two DVD's to me, are actually genius release and smart release times. Both instances will keep fans from wavering and reassuring them the band is around, and alive, and sounds hellagood still.

Anyone disagree?

I know TNC will..

I will say that the eventual release of the Dallas DVD will keep the Journey talk going through the next year while they are lying low. So it is a very smart time to release it.....with and audio cd I hope!

It's a shame you have to put that "e" word in there, J28. But those of us who've followed the band know that you do have to use that word. I'll take 4/06, though, just the same if they stay to their word...

It's a quality dvd to be sure, but the promotion of new product is not one of it's stronger features.
Two piddling Arrival songs?
Fuck that.

I can't speak for the Journey consuming public at large, but here's what I can tell you;
I owned "Arrival" before I saw Augeri in concert. Although I liked "Arrival", I held doubts about Augeri's ability to sing the classics.
The dvd assured me that he could do it.
Maybe you're right and many other people were assured, also.

Maybe.
Or maybe it will be greeted with the same consumer-apathy that "Generations". "Red13" and "Arrival" similarly encountered.

Genius?
C'mon dude, give me a break.
A band releasing a dvd in this day and age is not genius.
It's mandatory.
If anything, Journey should be ashamed for not having more products like these out there already.
Besides, there are also faults to be found with the setlists. The Dallas concert has many songs that were already includes on the Vegas dvd. Since it was being filmed they should've went all out and mixed the set-list up...more rareities.
On the plus side, there are the pre-perry tunes and some Generations numbers, so that's good. :)

I think the audience primarily for the Dallas dvd will be the BT/hardcore cult crowd. I don't think their Journey-loyalty was ever in question.
It may keep some casual fans and formerly Perry-onlies from bailing ship and wavering, though.

However, now that the market place is innundated with Perry-fronted Journey dvds, will the casual fan still feel like gambling on what is (to them) essentially an unproven entity (the new lineup)?
Journey 2001 sold well, in part, because there was no other option. There were no other Journey dvds in existence. Now that there is a choice (between Perry and the largely unheard current group), who will the casual listener buy? Perry? Augeri? Both? Neither? We shall see....

Not entiriely.

DVD Releases trumpeted in USA Today today:

Music DVDs bring the show to you - Mike Snider USA TODAY

Santa is stocking retail shelves with music DVDs at a record setting pace. More than 1500 new releases are already out this year, about 100 ahead of last year. Some of the top gift prospects:

• Dave Matthews BandL Weekend on the Rocks ($25)
• The Dick Cavett Show: John & Yoko Collection ($25) (editorial note from Jeremey - Where in the hell is the demand for that sack of horse turd?)
• Johnny Cash Live at Montreux 1994 ($15)
• Live 8 ($51)
• Cream: Royal Albert Hall ($30)
• Green Day: Bullet In A Bible ($25)
• Bob Marley and the Wailers: Live At The Rainbow ($20)
• U2: Vertigo 2005 ($20)
• Tommy: The Who and Quadrophenia Live ($35)
• Jimi Hendrix: Live at Woodstock ($20)
• Alicia Keys: Unplugged ($20)

*******

So no mention of Houston '81 and the Dallas DVD is still a good ways off.

25th Anniversary of his murder...

That is because it is not an upcoming release...it is already "old news".

RE Dick Cavett - Yeah, I know about JL, but I was talking more in terms of the Yoko part...I know the Dick Cavett show has had several releases recently with old guests, but if the appearances were John AND Yoko, that would be hard to stomach. Yoko sounds like a cat humping a wolverine.

RE upcoming releases, I don't believe many of them are upcoming, I'm pretty sure they were released from October on through upcoming releases. The list was more intended I think as "Here's some great music DVDs you may want to give as presents" than a review of upcoming stuff.

Just in Target twice this week. I did NOT wear a Jrny shirt, but asked 2 different sales people. The new Journey DVD they cannot keep on the shelf. The Arrival DVD still sells 5 copies a month.

I told them to stop ordering Gh 1977-1997..as that dvd is shit. I told her to order the fuck out of the new one, and put it in 2 places..cross merchandising..I said, put this one on an end cap and more in it's reg slot. Also, I said, 2001 can piggyback on that one..put it alongside the Houston DVD..

She actually carried it out, and guess what? Houston soldout on the endcap.
