I was lying in bed sick since Friday afternoon, have a stomach virus. But I was thinking, in between seeing which end of me would explode next, about Journey, and the first time I listened to them.
I didn't get into rock music until 77 when I then heard COME SAIL AWAY, which case I recorded all my freinds Styx record on to tape. I followed Styx, REO, Eagles, and Foreigner from 77 forward.
But in 81, after getting a job cutting yards, I saved up some money and joined Columbia's Record Club. At which point I then bought all Styx, Eagles hits 71-75, and a record called Escape. I bought it because the cover looked cool. Never heard, or remember hearing of this group before. So I got my records in on a Saturday, listened to the Styx, and the Eagles, just like I remember them form my copied tapes. Played the Journey last, before lying down to go to sleep. It was dark, put the needle on my little portable record player, and it blew me away. I was so tired, but I could not fall asleep. Had to hear the next song, and the next..... I remember thinking man this man can sing. Who is he, and who is playing guitar, cause this is awesome. What a team.
I wore that record out, bought two or three more copies of it, before buying at least that many on tape, and getting on cd.
But I became a Journey fan that night, and have stood behind the group and it's members ever since, and followed there music as it grows, or in some cases as we wonder what is next or if there is a next for some.

So I ask you, where were you when you first heard Journey or became a fan-ERIC

ERIC, stop lying. We all know you are making this up. Who gets a stomach virus and no one can research it on the web? I am not buying this load of shit.

ERIC, maybe it's different on the east coast or the South, but in California, I joined for a penny. I taped that copper coin onto the piece of paper with the circle on it, and in a week I had my 8 tapes. I didn't get a job cutting yards. I burned the money out of my old mans work pants..Much easier that way.

Played the Journey last, before lying down to go to sleep.

No ERIC, that guy on guitar is only a sideman...You shouldn't at all praise him...

So Escape's sales is slightly skewed....I wonder just how many copies were rebought buy the same person?

I would love to tell you, because I remember exactly where I was when I heard LTS...However, I would have to be required to provide a link for proof.

First Heard: '81 Don't Stop Believing. Became my sledding theme that winter, as a yoot.

Became Die-Hard in '93 when Time3 was given me as a gift. Gone.

Grade seven for me back in 81-82
Danny a classmate made me a cassette of Escape
I was hooked,lined and sunkered
Fave song on that album to this day is Escape.
Although Mother Father can never be out done!

First I heard "Oh Sherrie" and got hooked on the voice, then I heard "Only The Young" and got hooked on the band. Those are my earliest Journey memories, keeping in mind I was born in 1974.

1980 - junior year of high school...I heard Departure/Good Morning Girl at a high school dance. I asked the DJ who it was. Went home and dug through my older brother's albums to find Departure and quickly confiscated it.

Around 85....I was about 10, so I just started getting into music, and I heard Open Arms performed on tv, then heard SW on the radio.

ERIC- I do not recall specifically. I know I had heard several tunes, but I was young so I did not know much about them. It wasn't until Escape came out that I found out who Journey was. Then I went backwards, buying Captured. That sealed my fate...

First heard their music around 9.My parents listened to them.

Wow, eerily similar to my experience. I remember seeing Journey perform Anyway You Want it on some Sat. morning kids show and I reallly liked it. Then ESC4P3 came out a year or so later, so my parents got it for me for Christmas. I listened to it on headphones for a week straight, then went and bought Captured, which blew me away. Before I knew it, I had Evolution, Departure and Infinity.

Hmm...first time I ever heard Journey?

I'm sure I heard them earlier, but first time I remember specifically is age 4, summer of '81, in the car returning from vacation in Pismo Beach with my mom, Open Arms was on the radio.

Dunno why I remember, I remember a lot from that vacation because my mom and dad had just split.

In my beanbag chair, in my room, headphones on, lights out (I was supposed to be asleep), listening to my favorite late night radio show when I heard that "voice". It sounded familiar and then that amazing guitar.
The year was 1976 and the song was Look Into The Future.

I was just a kid when I was sharing a room with my older brother. I used to go to sleep listening to Of A Lifetime, In The Morning Day. By the time Journey released 'Next', I went out and bought my own 8-track and I have never looked back.

So "The Voice" is Gregg--not Perry...I'm cool with that. The first recollection I have of Journey is from the Soundstage show on PBS, I'd love to have that show on tape. But I don't think I bought anything until 1981 and that was actually Infinity as I liked Gregg's voice but found Perry's to be a little too shrill until it grew on me after a while. Bought Escape and Captured shortly thereafter. Journey is the only band I liked at that time that I still am really into. Grew tired of REO, Styx, Foreigner, Boston, etc.

The first time I had heard Journey is when I heard the song "On A Saturday Nite" with Gregg Rolie singing. It was a minor hit in the San Fran Bay Area where I am from.

But what cinched it for me is when I heard "Lights" on my car radio. I found out who it was, then went to the record store, and bought "Infinity". From there I was hooked.
