I just watched the Seperate Ways clip on You Tube (still trying to burn the MTV video out of my memory). This had to be close to the end of the tour.

So, here is the part I might get blasted for, but what the heck.

I thought Perry wore the Leopard shirt the entire tour. When did he change? Did he wear any others besided the leopard and the red/black one? The red/black seems to fit in more with the Frontiers Era than the Escape era. At least Perry still had his long hair in the video.

Shallow and girlie, I know... But does anyone have any answers?

That was after the Escape tour and just prior to the Frontiers tour thats why its different.

I could be wrong, but I think that clip is from one of the "Day At The Green" shows that Journey played at in 1982.

I always thought it was neat to see Steve sing that song with long hair. lol

It's weird how we associate certain songs with different looks of the band, like I can't hear a ROR song and not picture Perry's feathered mullet-ish thing.

And yes, that Seperate Ways video is perhaps one of the worst videos EVER! I think it was banned from ever being played on MTV again.

I seriously think that video did some damage to Journey's image. The Chain Reaction and After The Fall didn't help much, either. I know it was the early 80's, but c'mon - if Duran Duran could put out quality stuff why couldn't Journey? Did anyone actually WATCH those things before they put them on air? Tongue in cheek is one thing. These things were Major Swiss Cheese...

No wonder they lost credibility. Their videos were embarassing! They should have just stuck to Live.

That is a very valid point. Look at ZZ Top. Those guys got excellent feedback from male concertgoers and fans, because their videos, while all alike, had hot rods and hot chicks. Remember Legs? Fuck, it's all I can do to whip out Big Jim and go to town when I see that video.

You would see the bom boom on a funky native american drum

The band would be on all different levels of the canyon where it would be shot
There would be an eagle flying away at the end into the sunset
Steve Smith would have a very primitive Drum kit
The AHHHHHHHHHHHHH part towards the end would be an Indian chant
I see it so clearly

If you have ever been to the Valley of Fire you would know this is the place for this video

I just realized that this performance is the last we hear of Perry's smooth Escape era tenor before "Frontiers" when he added the gravel edge to his voice that we're familiar with from "Separate Ways" and "Ask The Lonely" and others.

I know he sounded pretty smooth on the "Frontiers" tour, but these Day On The Green performances seem like the end of an era or something.

Jeremy, that is EXACTLY what I thought when I was watching these. The end of an era.

My favorite Journey times are from 78-81. However, I will now add 82 to that. Something changed between 81 and the recording of Frontiers in 82/release of 83. I know Deano and a lot of other people love Frontiers, but it went downhill for me there.

There was magic during 81/82 that even surpassed my favorite Departure lineup with Rollie.

Funny how we both had the same thoughts about this performance.

It seems like a transition or something. Good or bad, Journey was heading somewhere.

I like the Frontiers album a lot except the song "Back Talk" I just think it's kinda cheezy, although Steve Smith is excellent on it. I just wish it could have been an instrumental track. Steve saying, "Don't talk to me with that tone of voice!" is just too much IMO. lol
