I just came to this board yesterday on the hunt for information about Survivor and Jimi Jamison. And I was kind of amused how the biggest forum was Journey, so I poked my nose in here, and saw that Journey fans are a big and vibrant group, some would say die hard.

I remember Open Arms and Oh Sherrie from high school. I liked them, but didn't love them.

Scratch that.

I just downloaded "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" HOLY CRAP!!!!! I love it. I could totally see myself getting into this band. That song blew my socks off... it's very much in the same vein as say, Survivor's Burning Heart. Same driving beats and minor melodies. Wow. Just wow.

Have any of you guys ever played around on pandora.com? It's "the music genome project" and tells you that if you like one type of music, artis or song, then you'll probably like this as well. They do it based on stuff like "major key tonality" "aggressive male vocal", "wall of sound", "extensive vamping" those sorts of defining factors. Very cool. It says it's for Americans, but I'm Canadian and it works for me.

I loved the thread in the Toto forum where the poster asked for suggestions how to turn a Journey fan into a Toto fan. I guess I'm in that boat. What Journey songs/albums do you guys suggest for a diehard Survivor fan? Or the newcomer to Journey in general?

i would start with Greatest Hits to get a sampling of each era, then go from there.

Monty, start with Generations and then Time3. Time is somewhat voluminous, but might's well jump right in at the deep end.

red, i knew that would get your panties in a bunch.

not sure if i'd recommend time3 yet. a lot of the tracks are cool for us hardcore fans that want more obscure stuff, but may not be as interesting to a newbie.

If you're too wimpy to go Time3 (Cyndy's right it may be somewhat daunting for a newbie, though I thought the depth and variety of Journey's music really pulled me in, owning Time for my first Jrny purchase. Actually I demanded and recieved it as a gift when it came out as I din't have the coin at 18 yrs old ) then get the new pressing of GH, the one with WYLAW....the old one's obsolete now.

Perry, first buy I'd go FTLOSM.

You know what kills me? I've had the giggles for WEEKS because I read somewhere that Survivor was often called "The Poor Man's Journey" and that just tickled my funny bone for some reason. Guess I'm venturing into Rich Man's Journey territory now. LOL

IMO, I'd go with Greatest Hits or Time 3 also.

JoePa, pleeeease.......lets wait until he/she is a die-hard fan before giving Generations a listen. And this is coming from somebody that likes Generations, but I don't think I would recommend it as a first Journey choice to someone.

LOL...Jo,welcome to Journeyland.

The GH DVD and the GH CD is like a must have package.You'll end up being hooked and you'll certainly want more.
I'd also recommend "Captured" for a taste of live Journey.

You'll get to "Generations" too,but not before taking the basic steps.

No, not Time3. I would go halfway in between Greatest Hits and Time3 and start with Essential Journey.

That's a good one to start with, too...in fact, that was the first ever Journey music I bought, well, right after the Greatest Hits DVD, another great DVD because it goes through the whole history showing a bit from every Journey era. I love my Journey DVDs.

Jo, here's how I did it back when E5C4P3 came out, I got that for Christmas (I was 13 or 14). Loved it so much, I looked for another one to get, and saw the double live album Captured in the rack. Had to see if Perry sounded that good live, so I bought it. Blown away by that album. To this day, still my favorite live album. From there, I got Infinity, Departure, and Evolution. By the time Frontiers came out, I was a Journey nut.

IMO Essential Journey is the best starting point for a Journey newbie. I've given it to several people who went on to explore and love the entire catalog.

No, Sherrie. Start with the masterpiece (E5C4P3), then on to Captured, then the rest of the catalogue.

No NIG, give them a sample of everything and make them hungry for the rest.

I started off with Journey when my mom had Greatest Hits in her car. Every time we went on long car trips my sister and I would demand she put in Journey. I was... what... I think fifteen or fourteen at the time (I'm nineteen now). I started really getting into Journey when I bought the Essential Journey, so I recommend that as a starting point. From there I went on to buy Escape, Evolution, Frontiers and Infinity... So, check those out too.

I got the discography, and although I haven't listened to it all... the one I find myself going back to... so far...

I list E5C4P3 and Frontiers as #1 and #2, but if you burn a copy of Frontiers and tack on Ask the Lonely and Only the Young, it's hard to go against it.
