Dusty

Curious...does anyone else hear a resemblance between Perry and Dusty Springfield?

They both possess such passionate, soulful voices, and I think that both of their singing styles are very similar.

But I don't ever recall hearing or reading that she was an inspiration to him.

I've also heard that she was a perfectionist (and a major pain in the ass) in the studio...

Any hits I would recognize?

Hmmm... heard the first one. Not the others. Feels good to say she was before my time!

I loved Dusty, and needless to say, I kinda like Perry  , but I really don't hear anything similar in their voices or styles.

Stephanie Edwards, this week's idol reject, is on Regis and Kelly right now singing You Don't Have to Say You Love Me.

She also did a song with the Pet Shop Boys in the 80s called "What Have I Done To Deserve This."

She did and it was great. She was one of my faves from the 60's she has a power house voice. Just as our Mr P. Go check her great music it will have been time well worth it.

It makes me wonder if the people on that votefortheworst website and Stern are trying to see what they would do with a winner who really can't sing.

I'm sure producers would make sure that doesn't happen.

You know why don't you?

True story.

Simon Cowell said, "If Sanjaya wins, I will quit American Idol."

Howard Stern took notice, and asked all of his listeners to call and vote as many times as possible. Not only that, but a site called votetheworst.com has a machine (allegedly, that allows a person to log on, and call to vote for their "singer" and it keeps calling all night long until you log off. It was estimated that the Stern listenership not only saved Sanjaya, but he was in the top 3 with regard to total votes.

American Idol is a complete joke. The singers suck and the entire thing is to appease Cowells' attention whore like attitude.

I think it may also exist to make a buck or two.

Joss Stone is more like Perry, imo. She sang "Son Of A Preacher Man" to honor Dusty at the British Music Awards. She is an incredible talent.

Even though it's unfair to the ones who really can sing, it might be interesting to see what happens if Sanjaya really does end up with the most votes.

You know that kid has to know he's not really as good as some of the others and what a lot of people are saying about it. Maybe before he lets a Melinda or Lakiesha get rejected he'll do the right thing and step out.

Not Dusty Springfield, but would love to hear Steve Perry tackle "Take Another Little Piece of My Heart" in his 1983 voice...

Oh hell yeah, I've thought about that too Jeremey. Can you just imagine the texture he could bring to that? In fact, I'd love to hear you do that one.

I guess I was referring to their vocal style, not so much as sounding alike.

Steve's given credit to Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, Smokey and Otis (aside from Sam Cooke) as influences, and I don't think he actually sounds like any of them.

Was just wondering if anyone else saw any connection.

I think it may have to do with their listening preferences, or the era in which they were raised.
Also, Joss is awesome!
I love the all the music, all the way back to 30's blues...so, I would say, yes, to your question..
I would love to hear Steve sing some Otis Redding...TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS!

They are playing one of her songs on a commercial that's airing currently; it's called, "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life?" It's just lovely--she had a wonderful, emotive voice...
