OT: Your opinion! Please?

I attend Satsuma High School in Satsuma, Alabama..
My mom is sindee67, and we are pissed!!!
Here's why..
My Mom was in the Satsuma Band back in the 80's, haha, yeah, she's old!!!! {love you, Mom}
The school is taking away from the band, the consessions money, and giving all the money from the home games to the football team!
Letting the band and other ''activities'' split from the visitor's side..
Now, I'm a football guy, and I don't think it's fair.
They used to share the money, 50/50~
The band is the group that painted, and put on the roof shingles, and repaired that concession stand..Now, they're not going to get the money?
WHERE THE HELL IS THAT FAIR?
I would like your opinion. Please. I know it's not your concern, and it's all the way in Alabama. I was raised in Indiana, but, right is right and wrong is wrong.
I have to get to school, I'm late, it's going to be Hell today!!!
Wish me luck!

If that goes through, you should make sure everyone that is pissed about it buys concessions from the visitor's side. Maybe even sit over there.

Well, I'm a little peeved.
Since, the 80's we in the band have done nothing BUT fix those stands, do the concessions, mow the field, you name it, we did it for the football team..
NIG, thank you, I thought the same thing...I even think the band should sit at the VISITOR'S SIDE next season also.
I love my football, I love my SATSUMA GATORS!
This, is wrong. The band has always come last, but, did all the work for the football season!
What did we get for it? A little square at the goal line.
I don't mean to lash out here, but, I thought maybe I was being partial, since I was a band member...Thank you, son, but, I'M NOT THAT OLD!
I know ya'll will be honest. Again, thank you for your time. :D

yup, you're right. screw whoever came up with that and the horse they rode in on.

fight.

any atheletic event is a good portion about the food. and halftime is a big part of the game too as is the music during the breaks, rallies, after score celebrations, time outs,, etc.

the football team gets the ticket money.

but I used to teach marching band so what the heck do I know. hehe. they tried to feed me that one time. I ALLOWED them to live and they dropped it. grrrrrrrrrrr.

besides, a football game is a band concert anyway with an intermission before the halftime show and an intermission after halftime. bwahahahahaha!!!!!

The Principal was quoted as saying it was her job to see
that all the students benefit from the sales.
If this schedule has worked well for the past 30yrs
and everyone got something from it, why is it being
changed now?
Seems logical to me that the ones who do all the work
should reap the most benefits.
I tell ya if I was in the band I would not be working
for the up keep of the stands and such if my efforts
weren't gonna help my group.

Why is it that this one Coach made this decision?
or is it that a committee decided but the Coach is the
one with his name attached.
I would be peeved to Sindee, your Son asked for us
to wish him luck today so that's what I'll do.......

Good Luck Sindee's Son! :P

This sounds like a National Lampoon movie in the making. You need an evil principal, and the QB who changes sides when he falls in love with the hot blonde flute player.

my my, NIG--are you making a pass at me?    thanks!!!

no, not all the students deserve a cut. they just show up. they don't practice after school before school travel to out of town games pay for uniform cleaning sit in the stands with the band instead of their friends go to marching contests nor do they have to put with the likes of me, the evil band director. no way. fight it.

The band should march out at half time and then just stand there at attention, dead silence.
Make a statement.

I was very involved in a high school marching band in the '80s as well, and I have to say, what the Athletic Director and Principal are doing in this case is bullshit. Unfortunately, not too many people have much respect for band programs anymore (if they ever did) while the sports teams at most schools are the golden geese. I'd say do whatever you can to make sure that no one buys concessions from the home side, and if you have to, boycott the football games.

...or each March out on to the field, not with their instruments, but each with a hot dog that they just bought at the visitors concession stand!

I was a band mom and member of the Band Boosters fund raising organization for the years that my two daughters went through high school. This wouldn't have happened then because at that time the band ruled. We won awards across the state in competions while the football team was a joke. Now however, it seems to be the exact reverse there these days so I can see them trying something like this.

I'm with NIG, boycott the home side concessions.

You're lucky, Sherrie. When I was in the band we won awards and no one cared! The concert band even travelled to London one year and we won an international competition, and we got absolutely no recognition at home. :(

I don't have a clip of that particular show, but we made an album of the songs we performed over there. I thought it was pretty darn good for a high school band!

Oh man that sucks. Our kids got greeted with a parties on the ballfield and a parades down mainstreet in convertables. It's a really small town though, so that makes a difference.

That's REALLY cool. I'll bet none of those kids will ever forget the parades! I think the small town factor makes a big difference. I live in the suburbs.

Ok CHUCK, I have given this some thought. Please don't be offended, but I just can't help myself.

Being in the band sucks. I have always thought that if you are in the "School Band" that meant you weren't good enough to play on the team. Now, I am sympathetic to you and your cause because I went to a major college and dig the fuck out of the band playing the fight song and other cool tunes. Even though I would never be in the Band, I do appreciate the work that goes into it, and do think the band should receive adequate funding.

Stop whining about it, and go over the principals head on this. Screw that bitch. If you aren't going to get funding, flatout either-

A) Go out there and do stupid antics like the Stanford University Band. These guys don't do all that marching in formation shit. They go out and do stupid shit. They perform politically incorrect stunts. At Oregon State during the spotted owl controversy, they went out and formed a chainsaw. At California Berkely, they pissed in the Cal endzone. Bottom line: They don't give a shit...and people love them. The Stanford fight song is All Right Now by Free( Paul Rodgers). This is the best college band in the Land.

B) Go out on the field and play Money by Pink Floyd. Play to the crowd, and let them know what is happening.

C) Get the local newspaper to write a story. Nothing like the power of the press. Go to a rival high school, and talk to their band members and see if the same shit happens over there. If it is different, then you have something to go to war with.

D) Show up in your uniforms and just sit in the stands. People will wonder what the Hell you are doing NOT playing. No money, no play.

E) Play the other teams fight song. If you only get their revenues for concessions, play their fight song.

I can guarantee you, a principal will cave to this.

NIG, that is a great idea. If they would start a blog, and then hold up signs at the game with the www address, it would garner attention.

I just thought of something though. The band plays at football and basketball games. Those two sports are over with. Just what does the band do now?

I have one better, "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister. :P

I agree with all here...the gloves are off. My brother, sister and I were all in band for all our high school careers(I was also in volleyball, so bite me Deano). My brother is a band director...I will have to tell him about this. Bands are very big up here and sometimes get more money then sports! Maybe he will have some other ideas, although all the ideas here are great!

Good luck!
