The below letter was sent via email to thousands of people in order to aks music fans like we are to help the Internet Radio survive.
Perhaps a lot of you are familiar with Pandora. The founder is explaining the whole thing...
You can also go to the site and explore a bit, just to be familiar with all this.

I thought of posting it here, and maybe increase the chances of a positive outcome.

Thanks everyone. :)

"Don't let the voice of net radio be silenced"

Image

Hi, it's Tim from Pandora,

I'm writing today to ask for your help. The survival of Pandora and all of Internet radio is in jeopardy because of a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC to almost triple the licensing fees for Internet radio sites like Pandora. The new royalty rates are irrationally high, more than four times what satellite radio pays and broadcast radio doesn't pay these at all. Left unchanged, these new royalties will kill every Internet radio site, including Pandora.

In response to these new and unfair fees, we have formed the SaveNetRadio Coalition, a group that includes listeners, artists, labels and webcasters. I hope that you will consider joining us.

Please sign our petition urging your Congressional representative to act to save Internet radio: http://capwiz.com/saveinternetradio/iss ... id=9631541

Please feel free to forward this link/email to your friends - the more petitioners we can get, the better.

Understand that we are fully supportive of paying royalties to the artists whose music we play, and have done so since our inception. As a former touring musician myself, I'm no stranger to the challenges facing working musicians. The issue we have with the recent ruling is that it puts the cost of streaming far out of the range of ANY webcaster's business potential.

I hope you'll take just a few minutes to sign our petition - it WILL make a difference. As a young industry, we do not have the lobbying power of the RIAA. You, our listeners, are by far our biggest and most influential allies.

As always, and now more than ever, thank you for your support.

-Tim Westergren
(Pandora founder)

Let me preface this by saying that even though, in my opinion, internet radio doesn't really appear to be taking the world by storm, I think these rising rates are ridiculous, and another example of the recording industry's attempts to squeeze money from every possible orifice of the buying public to compensate for the downward spiral of quality and consumer interest. Do the artists who benefit from royalties have anything to do with the lobbying to raise these rates, or is it really the mega-publishing companies owned by the record labels who pay flat one time publishing advances to struggling new artists then try to make all they can off the back end of such deals by selling the rights to Ford and Cisco, ad infinitum.

I believe it's the latter,Jeremey... Perhaps the labels feel like it's their right to make as much money as possible given the fact that the artists who enjoy label promotion may earn considerable amounts of money from concert performances. These earnings are not shared with the label,so they try to find other ways to make profit.

Oh and Deano, stop being so goddamned drastic.Every form of communication has its importance.I agree that sattelite radio IS the thing, but even so wtf could be wrong in saving IR?

Even Journey likes it and needs it.

I put our Sirius radio in my car, and have to say I'm not impressed. Won't be renewing it.

I have what's commonly known as a CD player, see with that you can play the music you like, pause it, continue it, pause it and pop out for a cig, play it again...it's fuckin' amazing and you don't need an internet connection or a satellite link and best of all you don't have to listen to tracks you don't want to...it'll catch on one day I'm sure of it 8)

For everything else I watch VH1, someone once told me, that comes in via satellite, ain't that amazing

Sirius is great, I love uncensored talk radio. The music stations are certainly better than any terrestrial station.

I do have these criticisms though:

1. No melodic AOR oriented station
2. They don't play new music from classic rock artists
3. Too much Guns N Roses/Bon Jovi/Motley Crue on Buzz Saw and Hair Nation channels
4. Unlike XM, no exclusive concerts. XM regularly has bands like come in to play full sets. Cheap Trick did a great annivesary of Buddokan concert at XM studios

Needless to say I am looking forward to the merger. :)

Stern, Bubba the Love Sponge, Ferrel, NFL Network and plenty of other programing keep me happy with Sirius.

Just to add - I have nothing against Internet radio though and think the government and RIAA are being ridiculous.
