A Journey, or Perry Topic...Finally

I am a little slow, but as I was driving to work today, I hit the play button on my cd player and Be good to Yourself came on..Ok, so I listened....
I came to the conclusion, that this is Steve Perry's departure song, his warning, about him leaving music and more importantly, Journey.
Ok, now we all know that SP was getting tired of being lead singer for one of the biggest bands in the world in 1986. This song undoubtedly tells of the story of Perry's uneasiness and the infighting between Perry, Schonny and Friga.
Runnin out of self control
Gettin close to an overload
Ok. We get it, you're saying that you were getting really tired of this business.
Up against a no win situation
Infighting?
I'm hangin' up my boxing gloves
gettin ready for a long vacation
Well, it does make sense. He did basically quit Journey, halfway through the ROR tour.
Be Good to Yourself, when nobody else will
You're walkin' a high wire
caught in a crossfire
Sounds like he is saying "poor me" I can't stand all this criticism from everyone
When you can't give no more
His voice going out, going away? Sure as Hell sounds like it
They want it all, but you gotta say no
Did Herbie and promoters want too much? Too many dates? Did Neal and Jon want to tour too much?
I'm turnin' off the noise that makes me crazy
Perry is saying, in coded words, I am about to leave...leave all of you
Looking back with no regrets
Yeah, I wouldn't have regrets either if I sold 40 million records.
I want a little piece of mind to turn to
Retirement, off the road, San Diego way....I get it now.

I am certain of this being Perry's personal anthem of departure.
My qyuestion is, I wonder if Neal and Jon have ever thought this as well? I also wonder if they would be pissed off and never play the song live again because they were made to look like fools?

Yeah he did, but obviously he had no idea what Perry was thinking. Perhaps Friga wrote some and they fit in perfectly with Espees desire?

you may be on to something for real....
Runnin' out of self-control
Gettin' close to an overload
Up against a no win situation
Shoulder to shoulder, push and shove
I'm hangin' up my boxin' gloves
I'm ready for a long vacation
CHORUS
Be good to yourself when nobody else will
Oh be good to yourself
You're walkin' a highwire, caught in a crossfire
Oh be good to yourself
When you can't give no more
They want it all but you gotta say no
I'm turnin' off the noise that makes me crazy
Lookin' back with no regrets
To forgive is to forget
I want a little piece of mind to turn to
CHORUS

I've went back and forth...so many great songs, but I think I've settled on BGTY as my fave Journey song now.

Honey, this is but a crumb of the pie

There is so much more I can bring to the discussion, but that damned Redwingfan and Dave derail me away from Journey and we fight about politics.

I thought that when I first heard it too, especially this verse. You can only go on giving 110% for so long.

I never thought of it that way. I'll bet your 100% correct. I'll never see the song as before. It wasn't about life's situations, but being in the band. Genious, Deano.

You're so smart! Damn! It only took you about, what? 50,000 years to figure that one out!

Deano, sounds like an excellent question to post to Perry the next time he does one of the Fan Asylum Q&As.

It probably is, but then again, we don't know for certain until he says, oh hell yeah it was. It's definitely a 'save my own ass' song, but that could pertain to a LOT of things. Was it Journey? Probably. Doesn't hurt to ask, ya know?
