OK...I'm not talking about that farce of an album by Pat Boone here. Since JSS was surprised that so many Journey fans also seem to be into metal, how about naming your top 5 favorite metal albums?

1. Paradox ~ Royal Hunt...D.C. Cooper, one of the finalists for Halford's spot in Priest at the time, is the singer here and, like "Operation: Mindcrime", this one is a concept album. Great keyboard, guitar, and vocal work on this one, Cooper's last with the band.
2. Operation: Mindcrime ~ Queensryche...This is to metal what "The Wall" is to art/prog rock. Geoff Tate is his normal awesome self here and the epic "Suite Sister Mary" is nearly perfect. All the songs flow together perfectly.
3. Painkiller ~ Judas Priest...Priest kinda fell flat with "Turbo" and "Ram it Down", both of which had some good tracks, but this monster is their heaviest offering and The Metal God screams and sings like no one on this album.
4. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son ~ Iron Maiden...ANOTHER concept metal album. Not sure why I have three of them in my top 5 but oh well...Dickinson is still in top voice here and the twin guitar duo of Dave Murray and Adrian smith are at the top of their game, in my opinion.
5. Dead Winter Dead ~ Savatage...This one was recorded in '95 and the single "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo) would go on to be added to TSO's first Christmas album. Not many know it was originally released under the Savatage name, though many of the musicians are the same.

Queensryche - OM - Phenominal is the first word that comes to mind.

Megadeth - So Far, So Good... - For some reason, although not as heavy as Rust in Peace, this
my fave Megadeth release. Darkest Hour and Hook In Mouth STILL sound fresh today.

King Diamond - Them - I went absolutely BONKERS when I heard "Welcome Home" in the movie "Clerks II"

Warrior Soul - Self Titled Debut - Korey Clarke could wail with the best of them and I love the Bass player's tone.

Flotsam & Jetsam - No Place For Disgrace

Overkill - Hello From The Gutter

Metallica - Puppets - Need I comment? This album set the bar.

Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite - This was their debut. I read a review when it came out that said
"this band is a cross between 'Ryche and Rush..." I ran out and bought it right away and, even 8-10 albums later,
this is still my favorite DT album.


And these are just some of my fave "Metal" albums.

Aside from 'Metropolis', this album is pretty weak. It was LaBrie's debut as DT's singer.
You definitely need to check out the debut, "When Dream And Day Unite" as well as "Scenes From A Memory".
"Scenes" is basically 'Metropolis prt 2". It tells the whole story that the original song touched on.
It's a concept album that doesn't reach the greatness of Ryche's OM but it's close.
Just about every song on this album is built from a riff or melody contained in the original "Metropolis" tune.

For me, there are times when I need to listen to some Metal music, just because I've had a bad day, or simply because I'm pissed at the world! I don't listen to as much now, because my musical tastes have kind of "slowed down" a bit. Modern day metal music, though, I just don't get. Sounds like the lead "singer" is trying to hack up a massive loogie!

I don't think the hardest rock I like is really considered metal. Are GnR and Kingdom Come metal? Is Yngwie's album Odyssey with Joe Lynn Turner considered metal?

"Odyssey" is definitely metal. The leadoff track, "Rising Force", kicks serious ass.

Some GnR stuff is metal as well as Kingdom Come but I'd probably call them both hard rock or heavy rock.

GNR & Kingdon Come are definitely Hard Rock. I really wouldn't consider ACDC metal either, though!

That's interesting, Jeremey. One of my friends said the samething about Slayer's "It's Raining Blood" song. He said it would keep him up at nights dreaming about blood raining down from the skies, so he stopped listening to Slayer. Actually, it was one of his friends who made him listen to Slayer whenever they'd hang out, so I guess he stopped hanging out with him...lol!

Always been more of a classic rock guy myself. I don't know if any of these are metal by definition but I always liked Bad Co. Triumph, Led Zep, The Who, Sabbath, Ozzy, AC/DC, etc.

Like I said I'm kind of a classic rock nerd. Just cannot get into anything that's out there right now.

I still think i's their weakest effort but love Awake.

Their original singer was a guy named Charlie Dominici.

I can see how Slayer could do that to someone! It's funny, though - You can kind of get away listening to those kinds of lyrics at 15-16, but from an adult perspective, I've really felt bad listening to it so many years ago. Not good stuff, and I don't necessarily mean the blood imagery.

I can kind of see that! I think that is the reason why i never really started listening to anything metal until I was about 17 or 18. Actually, the first metal album that turned me on to the music was Metallica's black album. It used to be with me that if I heard an Iron Maiden song or anything like that, I'd be like "wow that sounds so satanic!" I don't know if that is a good thing or not now, but it doesn't bother me as much nowadays, I'm just back to mostly AOR type of stuff now.
