Question for singers...

Someone at work asked me what causes the urge to cough when singing. Of course I have no clue for sure, not a singer (except in the car, lol), but my guess was spit or snot  lol. Of course I figured here would be the best place to ask. So singers, what does cause that coughing urge?

For me, it typically happens if my throat is dry or I'm trying to hit a note that's too high for me. Also, try singing some AC/DC and it's sure to happen.

Well, to be honest with you, it's HARD to cough while singing.

The only thing that'd make me cough is creating some sort of "air pocket" while taking a breath to sing - or if your throat tenses up due to nerves.

Dunno if that makes sense....

Bon Scott or Brian Johnson? I find that they have very similar styles. Very bluesy. Bon had that venom and Brian has that gravel like Rod Stewart. It's a natural thing and if someone who doesn't have it tries to push it then I think bits of your lungs come up, too!

I have less of an inclination to cough while singing than I do when I'm not, unless I'm sick, in which case all the Hagar and Tyler material gets dropped from the set list. Proper breathing technique can help a singer overcome the symptoms of a cold with the only net effect being a loss of range and endurance.
