I never had a chance to respond to my art/shit thread. I suppose this is a continuation of it.

I've never seen a fan comment against the version of Good Times from JOURNEY's Time3 collection. You know why? It's a stellar performance. What makes it stellar? Steve Perry took a GREAT Sam Cooke song and sang it - NOT LIKE SAM - but like Steve Perry. Sure. There are some Sam Cooke inflections in there and rightly so however it's Steve's treatment of the song that makes it special. If you've ever heard Sam's version you'll know what I'm talking about. His version is MUCH different. It's a more soulful and swinging tune while JOURNEY rocks it out just enough to give it that JOURNEY sound.

Steve Perry SANG on that song. He used HIS VOICE and breathed new life into the song. ART. This is their legacy!

What's NOT art is when and impressionist takes the mic and does their best Steve Perry with the band playing the EXACT song arrangement. So I have to ask: is this doing justice to their legacy?

Fyre - you were a big supporter of Steve Augeri. What was it about Journey's live shows with him that was any different? He was hired to sound like Perry. The arrangements were exactly the same. Why the sudden disapproval?

Sure, the die-hards and obsessives might be able to describe the subtleties and nuances of Augeri's interpretations of the old classics - his voice might be 'bluesier' than Perry's and so on and so forth - but we all know exactly why he was up there on the stage. What Augeri had done in the past was irrelevant. In the context of Journey live he became a tribute singer.

So I guess my question is...if Jeremey's voice sounds naturally similar to Perry's voice then will you support him as well?
