Who Will Take The Helm Of Journey?

--------------------------------

Kevin Chalfant is a great singer, and so is Jeremey.... but I don't see either of them or anyone else taking the helm of Journey for quite some time. I think Neal and Jon have learned their lesson. The magic is with Friga, Fro, and Fairy.

Jon Cain, Neal Schon, and Steve Perry. MAGIC!!!

Any thoughts?

It wouldn't work. Neal has a wooden shoe phobia.

Can't always sleep at the 'right' times! I've been around, just not too much to say lately. I'm not much of a speculator, so I'm just waiting to see where the Journey chips fall now.

We've lost several big name posters lately, but also a lot of newbies. You're like an assassin. Highly selective, well targeted posts.

So what do you think the band should do about this mess?

I think it now depends what they're in business for. If they were flirting with serious new music, then arguably that aspiration has disappeared with their dumping of JSS, who seems to be an able songwriter and might have provided some of the steel which I find Cain's songs need. Cain writes a pretty tune, but he doesn't seem to be able to find that 'edge' on his own. I am aware that I am generalising here, but that's how I view Cain's talents.

Given the band's recent actions though, I'd have to conclude that they were now in business just to bank as much as they can in their declining years (career-wise, anyway), the route for which is the live, nostalgia circuit. I don't know their financial situation/s, but everyone has to earn a crust. The hints which have been given thus far suggest that they have all but surrendered any idea of taking the world by storm, and that Journey is no longer seen as a creative outlet for them, but a paycheck.

My belief is that JSS was probably canned because, of all of them, he is young(er) and still hungry for that success which Journey enjoyed years ago. His desire to add to their legacy might have threatened their comfort zone. Who knows? I said speculating wasn't my thing!

The thing is, none of the internal politics of the band really affect my enjoyment of the music they made years ago. Yes, I have preferences, and I am sad to see them apparently fading away. I'd be surprised if there actually was a 'master plan' for their future other than maximising Box Office receipts at this point.

I reserve the right to change my mind about any and all opinions! :D

Yeah, I think you are right on with that post. Whoever they get to sing, they had better record new music if they want to keep me as a fan. Even if they refuse to play it live in favor of the fucking dirty dozen.

I'm not confident that there will be any new music at this point. I would love to hear something fresh, about which I could get enthused. I think I first came onto this site a couple of years ago, unenthused about Generations, but still hoping that they would find the creative desire for a stunning swansong with which to end Journey's career.

I read Andrew's assertion that they had been offered a recording contract with JSS as their lead singer. My conclusion is that the venture must have been too risky, financially. Recording ties up time in the studio which could be used on the road, earning. What if the new album, when produced, didn't fly? It has been a long time since Journey took risks and it seems that any euphoria that might have been fuelling the band on the road with JSS didn't extend to them being prepared to step off a financial cliff with him in the cold light of day.

To keep me as a fan? I will always be a fan, but I think the writing is on the wall, and I am not expecting anything new to be a fan of. :(

(For the english language purists, I am aware that I ended that sentence with a preposition and I just don't care!)

Journey is going to record new music regardless of who the new singer is. I suspect it will be Jeremey and the new stuff will be fantastic. He has a good feel for what their sound should be like and he's got some original stuff that is very much in stride with what made Journey successful. The best thing he has going is his voice. It immediately grabs your attention and makes you listen. The rest will be up to the band to play along, and especially Neal to find chemistry like he had with Perry.

I hope you're correct, St. John. I am basing my tea-leaf reading on the band's previous history; specifically the suggestion that Neal and Jon were dragged unwillingly to the studio for Generations. If there is new stuff, I will buy it. If there isn't, then the old stuff will stay in rotation on the iPod.

St John- I look for nothing out of them because they are adrift and never have a plan. They react instead of act. I wouldn't care about it anyway like I cared less about the last 8yrs. Jeff was the only spark they had since Perry.

I think that Jeremy's silence (as he is usually a fairly regular poster on this board) speaks VOLUMES.....

What you said is true Squirt and one thing that needs to be taken into consideration right now is how they will react to things that are said on this board.

People who are saying they don't want Jeremey in the band or that they're through with Journey need to make sure they mean that before they profess it too loudly or too often.

It really says nothing much at all... Jeremey is very busy in his personal life right now. But he has recently commented that he hasn't said anything about Journey because there has been nothing to say as of yet.

I agree. Opinions change once emotions die down. I don't know if it's possible to still love and support Journey at the same time that you hate and despise Friga & the Fro, but I do think there were people who got back on the Journey train after the fiasco that was tapegate, so it is entirely possible that they will take the train for another ride with a new lead singer. The jury is still out for me...

I AM DONE WITH JOURNEY. COUNT ME AS SOMEONE WHO IS COMPLETELY FINISHED SUPPORTING THEM. ANY OF THEM.

By the way Sherrie, if I recall correctly, you were 100% percent AGAINST Journey when Augeri was fronting the band. Talk about an about face. Hypocrite.

Not an about face at all. I was being completely honest then, just as I was when Jeff was with them, and just as I am now. I meant it then. I would rather have seen them fold at the time when I said that. I never thought Augeri could cut it, but I do think Jeremey can.

Pot, quit looking for a kettle.

You have got to be kidding me.
For years your sole fucking purpose here was to bash Journey and Augeri. Then, after Augeri was gone, you are automatically hooked?

Hypocrite.

I was pissed when they hired Augeri. Then I listened to ARRIVAL and changed my mind.

I don't believe the politics of a band should dictate whether I like them or not.

I didn't like JSS as a singer for them, but I love his other stuff and I still listen to Soul Sirkus.

I'll give the new lead singer a chance, if I like it, I'll listen, if not, I'll still love the old stuff and move on.

Face it ladies and gentlemen, no one is putting out much music these days that I'd be listening to for years to come.

It's nice to have the legacy of Journey for trips down memory lane and just to make you feel good.

I'd never disparage the love of music I have simply because an artist did something to piss me off.

There is no one who has ever worn as many faces regarding this band on this board as you have Dean. You calling anyone a hypocrite, even someone who has truly changed their opinion, is a bit absurd.

Fuck you Sherrie. Wear multiple faces? I loved Perry of course. I applauded and pulled for Augeri, until, well, when he got his hand caught in the cookie jar, and of course I supported Jeff. You just pick and choose arbitrarily.

You meet Jeremey and now all of a sudden you're hooked again. I will tell you right now, it's going to end badly, with or without him. You make me sick with the way you so nonchalantly play chameleon.
