Singers that CAN still cut it

With many of our favourite bands being around now for decades and with singers in their fifties or rapidly approaching their sixties, which vocalists can still cut it live?

For instance, I saw David Coverdale a few months ago and while I have great respect for what he’s achieved I thought his voice on that occasion sounded awful.

Likewise, Ian Gillan’s voice now sounds like a shadow of what it once was. So too is Robert Plant’s. Joe Elliott sounds really raspy compared to his heyday. I’ve seen Bobby Kimball singing in Toto a few times recently and each time it has made me cringe.

Maybe all these just had off nights when I saw them.

In contrast, older vocalists who DO seem to have maintained the quality in their voice include:-

Paul Rodgers
Phil Mogg (UFO)
Danny Bowes (Thunder)
Ronnie James Dio
Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann’s Earthband)

I've seen all of these recently and they all still sound magnificent.

Any more?

Marty

When I saw Joe Elliott in 2006, his voice was a "shell" of what it used to be and very disappointing. Now, Ann Wilson of Heart hasn't lost a thing. She is still absolutely powerful/raspy, just pure quality!

But you know according to Socratic Methodist, Tate doesn't have it anymore and that "seal bark" thing is no longer working.

Tony Harnell. Having taken lessons from him and standing 2 feet from him he is without a doubt one of the great under rated vocalists of all time. The guy has it all Power,Range, and Passion!
On top of it all, he is a really good guy and funny as hell.

They may have been considered one of the cheesiest bands from the 80's, but Joey Tempest of Europe can still do it.

Agree with Laura, I saw the double bill of John Fogerty and John Mellencamp back in 2005 and JF still sounded great. I went more for JM, but was blown away by JF. The people beside us even commented on that too. John Mellencamp still sounds great too considering what an extremely heavy smoker he was and having that heart attack back in the 90s.

Well, I know some of you are going to jump on me for saying this, but I DON'T care, I'm going to add Steve Perry to the list of singers that CAN still sing!!! Yes, it's true, his voice has MATURED over the years, and he sounded EXCELLENT on TBF Cd. He was also great with the group Guff, David Pack & Jeff Golub that he worked with too, since TBF time period.

Not enough evidence, Linus. We are talking about singers who have proven it by still releasing albums and/or touring. Not humming BG vox.

It's true? Can you prove it? No, you can't.

Actually, NIG is only half correct. The only way you can prove you can still sing is to do it in a live setting. Hell, Augeri couldn't sing, and "they" managed to make him sound good on Generations.

Steve Perry is done, you wacko psycho rambling hunk of marbles. You waited what, 3 weeks for an opportunity to pimp your boy?

Well Snoopy NIG, Guff Cd was released recently, and the thread was about "Singers that CAN still cut it". The poster didn't stipulate specifics about touring, being back up singer etc... ANYWAYS whether Perry is singing lead OR back up , HE IS still singing, so it COUNTS for ME!!! :)

Deano, I don't have to prove anything at all about Perry's singing abilitites, Perry has already SHOWN his voice to the fans countless times throughout the years! He doesn't have to keep proving anything to me, in order for me to know he CAN still sing, and SING GREAT too!!!
