Perry Clones

Listening to the few clones out there, it is amazing how Perry had the Total Vocal Package:

Pitch
Power
Sustainability
Emotion
Natural Ease
Range

The clones might have the range and the pitch, some can even sustain the notes, but they are all missing "something". Maybe because they are trying TOO hard to sound like someone they are not.

It is amazing to go from a clone sample right to Perry. Even on the Alien Project demo, he had it all. The man was born to sing.

On that note, I still think Jeff was perfect for Journey. I wouldn't want another clone. Jeff sang the songs with emotion. He sang like Jeff, not Steve. I respect that.

I have to agree - there are so many singers that "sound like" Steve and yet are not Steve.

Some come verrrrry close, but no one can touch the guy. And I don't care what key he sings in, raspy or not raspy, fast or slow, Journey or solo.

These similar singers always sound better when they are not trying to mimic Perry. I absolutely love Hugo's solo material, but I could take or leave the Journey music - the dirty dozen is the dirty dozen no matter who sings it. Steve Augeri is great when he is singing the music he helped create - he's got a very soulful voice that comes across best when he is not doing "Perry". I'm just sorry I couldn't see more of Augeri's own style in person.

Great post Knox, I full on agree.

While I'm not sure about right now, 10 years ago Jason Kelty had all of the things you mentioned.

And...Passion! Yes, SP has it all. No matter who Jrny gets to be the next lead singer...no one is ever going to have the same exact feeling for the songs as SP - those are his babies & that love is undying & fierce.

Saint John is 100% correct about Jason. He is the only person I have ever seen do it with near perfection and what appeared to be cords of steel. Never a crack no matter where he was....

That Lovin' You clip by Kelty is impressive. Don't care for the tone at the beginning, but as he gets further into the song he is dead on!

Are there any other recordings of him floating around?

Not yet. Someone mentioned in another thread they had a lead on some boots. Anyone remember who that was? I'm too lazy to look :D

Having heard Jason's work as far back as 10 years ago (but never live), I would pay to hear him sing in a heart beat. We need to find those boots. he has some original work too I believe. That would be awesome as well.

I saw Jason's band "Escape" perform at least 30 times back in the early to mid 90's, but I never bothered to record any of the shows, I wish that I had though.

Still working on two leads. I girl in Ohio that dated the guitar player and the guy that ran sound for them at the Toy Tiger where they played. He is out on tour running sound for Aaron Tipton at the moment. If I can get in touch with him AND he still has them I will get them and post em up quick. I am sure Kelty has some. Maybe Jim can get him to let go of a few.... Jim ?!?

Sorry man, wasn't me! I posted about his current situation, and have spoken with him a few times in the last couple of months, but have no boots. I may try to contact him and see if he has any of the older stuff, but something tells me he doesn't. If He sends me anything, I'll let you know. Thanks,

Jim

Actually, I think Soto could rival Perry in power, emotion and pitch. Jeff did bring something to the table that I liked that Perry never had. Masculinity. Not a jab at Espee, but rather a solid truth. The scary thing about Soto, and especially after knowing him a little bit, he got better and better. He was still improving with this band, molding himself into that Journey sound, and my two cents says he would have gotten to a point where it would have been really good.

You all think that masculinity scared Jon Boy?

From a female standpoint, I have to agree - JSS brought so much testosterone to that band it wasn't even funny. I love SP, I like SA...nothing against them. But the sheer power of Jeff's stage presence was something I didn't see with either Steve.

Hmm... Perry was pretty frickin good. He owned the stage. I saw that guy 20 times and every time he was awesome. Augeri on the other hand looked like the kid who peed his jeans on the field trip and was hiding behind the other kids when the zoo keeper was describing the goose and chickens. Soto did command the stage. His 6'3" frame sure helped that and also his confidence was very present. Confidence comes out when you know you can do the job. Perry and jeff had that. I think it was clear Augeri didn't have any at the bitter end of his run.

I'm not sure, but I think you are bordering on "fawning" here Deano!
