Do you think this line from Andrew's interview with Dennis Deyoung was inspired at all by tape-gate?

I'm gonna venture a guess and say YES!!!!!!!! That and he's probably taking a shot at styx too. I heard they are using prerecorded backing vox now too.

Journey and Def Leppard for sure. I don't know who was singing the high stuff for Joe last tour but it sure wasn't him. At least it wasn't him in the last 5 years anyhow. : )

Let me put it kindly. At DL's soundcheck, I heard music, and vocals, and the band was not there. That's right, they weren't even fucking there. At the Boston show, you could tell easily when the tape came in and when Joe went live (shudder)...DL needs to hire Elson...that guy was awesome in mixing tape and live vocals...but then again, there was hardly any live vocals....

Hell, I'm using pre-recorded typing right now to put this post out.

Can't tell for sure, but even if he is... they deserve it.

Yep, DL was using tapes long before Neal ever met John Waite. It really chaps my ass when a band advertises themselves as good singers...to explain away the amazing background vocals...when indeed, it was memorex....and not their singing.

Let me add, I have it on good authority that Michael Anthony is infact touring with Van Halen this coming fall....in digital form, of course....

DLR is probably getting some help too... last time I saw him live his voice was toast and this was 10 years ago!

I believe it bro. I don't know who the fuck was covering Elliot's ass in Indy but he wasn't singing the high shit for sure. It sure sounded like taped stuff for all the high parts. What a plonker. At least hire someone and put them on stage to cover your ass.

The last time I seen Delp, he openly acknowledged that he had trouble on some high stuff and Cosmo was going to cover for him. Delp was the is the real deal and he earned my immense respect. It's sad he's gone. Journey could learn a lot from Delp ...

I remember seeing Delp and Cosmo together on the Walk On tour....There were times when Delp couldn't sing a high part and Cosmo would step in to nail the note...and Delp would step back, smile, raise his arms to the crowd like "look at my brother getting my back!"

It was really special to see someone so humble yet still so amazing do something like that.....

True, no hidden info here. It's been stated publicly that they will be using pre-recorded MA.

Pre-recorded backing vocals aren't so bad, but any lead singer that needs to lip sync either needs a good rest or to quit.

Not by anyone from Van Halen, it hasn't. I'm going to see the first two shows and I'll be listening to see, though.

The wife dragged me to see Boston a few years ago. Delp made several references to Cosmo "bailing him out" on high notes during the show. Said Cosmo had the highest voice he'd ever heard.
I don't know about that, but Cosmo can certainly get up there.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Delp was a class act shooting the straight deal and giving credit where credit was due. He was a true gentleman and a clear leader for rock bands everywhere. Journey, take note ....

By all accounts a lot of bands do this Yet none of them ever seem to mention it.....House of Lords by all accounts and even Roger Waters! To be honest it seems to be the older bands

Def Leppard has history and 2 diamond albums on their side. Remember that when Jeff is trying to be Joe Elliott in warm ups (see youtube video). I'd rather hear a cover of "photograph" than "believe" any fucking day. Try as you might Dean, you can not now, nor could you ever, compare Joe Elliott to Jeff Scott Soto. There is simply no comparison. Joe Elliott has been part of a super group for well over 20 years. This is not a knock against Jeff...just the cold hard facts. Joe Elliott is simply better. It's been that way for over 20 years.

I look at it this way. Us fans pay good money (sometimes over pay IMO) to see professional musicians and singers get up on the stage and perform for us. If you are going to a live concert, I expect a "LIVE" concert. I understand that under certain circumstances, bands will use some pre-recorded material for concert (like sound effects and so forth,) but the main part of the music - lead and backing vocals, guitars, bass, drums, keys...should always be live.

On the flip side, if all of these classic rock bands who use pre-recorded vocals retired, I'm wondering if there would be any classic rock bands left? Boston was a great example of a band who played everything live! Brad Delp was the model professional in concert. Kansas is another band who is completely live in concert.

Many of Toto's choruses are on tape. But no big deal, it's not like you can't tell. Bobby's voice is stunning all night otherwise. If that preserves his voice for the whole show than fine.

It pisses me off when Toto does it, but at least all the leads are still live (and you know this because Bobby, even with teleprompters, still screwed up "Hold The Line" last summer).

Toto used to have 1 or 2 extra musicians touring with them to do a lot of the BG's....they still have Tony Spinner but not the extra percussionist and singer they used to have, i'm assuming it's just for cost reasons that they downsized their live band.

Some backing vocals were pre-recorded by Ed, Wolfie and Dave....no MA.

They did toss around the idea of backing vocalists backstage at one point.

Neither Dave or EVH can come anywhere close to the notes Mikey used to hit, so I'm not sure how that works.


Either way, taped b-vox are LAME. I'll even look on the business side of things and say someone like Toto needs to cut touring costs when they're playing clubs and small venues like they do in the U.S, but f'ing Van Halen with it's $150 tickets has to use them? Especially since they're using the tapes to cover up for an exiled member who's healthy, alive, and would love to play with VH. This thing reaks...I'm still a VH fan and I want the music to live on and hopefully hear a new VH album sometime before I die, but that doesn't make this less shitty.
