Back in 1996, when I heard they had gotten back together, I thought to myself: Awesome! They've been apart long enough, lived separate lives, grew as human beings, learned from past mistakes and will now be together as a band until they're using walkers.

Jesus Christ, was I wrong. Perry goes and climbs a cliff, screws up his hip (translation: My voice is too shot, I can't handle a tour). Neal had a taste of popularity again with the sales and radio play of TBF, still waits two years for Perry to change his mind before deciding once and for all to move on. Fires Perry and out of all his choices, hires Augeri, the least talented of the bunch who auditioned (god knows why). Hires a much more talented replacement for Augeri (JSS). Not in Perry's league, but miles above Augeri. Fires him and now appears to be hiring someone who is closer to Auger's talent level (Arnel).

It's just been a downslide of one bad choice after another since 96, hasn't it?. Neal isn't just going deaf, he's going dumb.

Well whether you want to believe the hip injury or not is up to you. I do believe it and it has been confirmed by Lora. But honestly, SP or for that matter anyone's health concerns or conditions are a private matter and not a public record concern.

I once refused to believe it, then when Lora Beard confirmed it, that swayed me. She is a very truthful woman and if she told me cats could fuck Hippos, I would believe her.

For the record, I do believe there was a hip injury and I should have been more clear in my comment about that before posting.

My intent with the comment was to point out there was fortuitous timing on the hip injury. I think it gave Perry an out. I don't think touring was really in his heart. Not after his voice gave out on his solo tour. His voice was in better shape on FTLOSM. There's a clear deterioration on TBF in comparison.

FTLOSM is the last tour Perry we'll ever see from Steve Perry.

I'm leaning that way too. He used a bum hip as an out for a crippled voice. I think he really damaged his voice in '81 & '82. He was in his early 30's, his voice was changing, but he pushed out the high notes because his fans expected to hear that. There is a distinct difference in his voice from '81 to '83. In '86 on some songs it sounds like his throat is swollen, ie: Be Good To Yourself. He gave his fans everything he had. I wish he had performed more responsibly, he could still be going today. Look at Rik Emmett.

He sounded like he was at the same vocal level on BNS as anything I heard on TBF. Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy what he did, but it's clear he's not capable of singing let alone touring the Journey catalogue ever again.

That also doesn't mean I wouldn't want him to record new stuff. Steve Perry at his worst packs more soul and emotion into a song than most singers at their best. Not to mention his unique inventiveness for melody and song craftsmanship. Something the post Perry era Journey has been sorely lacking.

I watched BTM earlier (for the umpteenth time) and what I came away with today was the feeling that the most animosity for everything that had gone down came not from Neal, the founder of the band, but from Friga. There were actually a few comments made by SP and NS that led me to believe even at that time there was still a kinda 'respect' for each other that surpassed all the bullshit that had happened.

Neal is an amazing guitarist, make no mistake. But his recent antics (whether intentional or just by 'benign neglect') disappoint me so much that I do not want to support him in any way.

At about the 4:17 mark, Ross talks about how Journey took big step by recording new material (TBF) and not relying on their past material. Just prior to this, it sounds (and looks on his face) like he is almost poking at some of the other bands who have regrouped.

Interesting, in light of JC's statement that they want to sound like the 65 million units already out there. I guess time changes the perspective.

At the time they had the means to write and record relevant new material(Steve Perry). Now they have nothing but their warped egos.

Frig and Fro just don't have what it takes without a catalyst of some sort. Steve Perry was that and JSS could very well have been that, but they have some sort of self destructive mindset going on.

I agree,he has always had class. On all of his interveiws he never talked about stupid shit like Neal and Friga. Even on the last interveiw about the Sopranos,that fucker even had a storyline ending that he thought would have been cool. He is a smart guy.He has been making money off of Journey while they ve been working and {lately} have been making asses out fo themselves. He is a fucking genius,way to go Steve P
