Marc Anthony said in an interview several years ago when he was first making a name for himself, (long before J-Lo made him famous) that Steve was one of his idols and influences.

That was done very nicely by Marc A. - he does sing it with a lot of feeling. I heard a cover of another song on the radio by him & I admit it sounded very much like the original - can't think of the song now.

I'm not a Marc Anthony fan in the least bit, but that was pretty damn good.

Marc Anthony actually started using this song in his concerts back in 2002. I believe Judy Torres got the idea from him to cover the song and it became a number one dance hit for her last year.

LOL, one of the first things I noticed too Kate. I get a kick out of audience reactions to Journey songs, for being a band that so many people think are uncool, the songs always get great reactions. Soooo many closet Journey fans out there.

I thought Mark did a great job on that!

Am I wrong here? The ending was quite different. He never attemped to hit Perry's notes. It was good till the ending.

Ya know, I made my post before I'd finished watching it. You are right -- he skipped all that, and the guitarist seemed flat on the solos. Heck, even I hit all the high parts when I sing that song. That's the best stuff! But what he did sing was very well done.

If I wasn't already a Marc Anthony fan, this performance would make me one!
That was beautiful!
Thanks for the link!

Kind of strange that the 5th and 6th related vids to pop up afterward are The Zoo and Jeff Scott Soto both singing Faithfully. Not sure how I feel about that, but man I love hearing Jeff sing that song!

I've always thought Marc Anthony would have been a great choice if Journey wanted to do something like "Queen + Paul Rogers" by bringing in a name singer. As you mentioned however, why would he want to do it?!? He's bigger by himself than Journey is these days...

For what it's worth though, the musical style may be generally far removed from Journey, but Marc Anthony is one of the best pure singers that I have heard in the last decade. There was a concert on HBO (and later dvd) from Madison Square Garden around the release of his first English-language album, and he pulled a Sam Cooke and radically improvised all over the vocal melody and extended the songs a bit working the crowd and pulled it off with flying colors.

Here's "You Sang To Me" from that show, one of the more pop-rock numbers, showing only a vague similarity to the studio cut that was all over the radio at the time.

don't know if Marc Anthony has ever actually covered Sam Cooke, but the live cut was similar to a lot of stuff Sam Cooke was doing on the Harlem Square Club live release with the ad-libs and such. Anthony could probably do Sam Cooke justice.
