I think it would be cool to hear Mr. Perry sing some classic r & b or soul tunes. I know he was heavily influenced by Sam Cooke and the likes, but if Rod Stewart could record some classic tunes and do well, then Steve would be the perfect match. Even if he Steve is more raspy it would suit those tunes great!


Also, I would love to hear SP do a Christmas cd. I truly believe it would be an instant classic.

Let's get one thing straight right out of the box. Rod "I am older than stale dirt" Stewart, was never in the same league as Steve Perry. Espee could easily do a R+B CD, probably in his sleep in about 7 days. Stewart is singing elevator standards for shit sakes. Hell, all of us could do that crap with a proper studio. Maybe later today, after Wyatt and I check out the Playboy calendar online, I will run over to Soto's crib and knock out a Christmas CD for y'all. It ain't that tough.

He is closer to doing crap like that than singing in a rock band. But I don't think he'll do either.

I used to be a proponent of this kind of idea for Perry, but I think the time for that has come and gone. Now I want to hear just one CD of original material. Something new, we don't need a tour. Perry can even go back into seclusion after it's release! Just something to close the door definitively and end his career on a high note (or a medium note, depending on his range... )

If it is because he feels he cant live up to his past "quality" then he underestimates how people (fans) really see him. His voice, regardless of power or note choice, has always had that richness that just resonates with listeners. This is evidenced by watching him from 81 and then again in the 90's solo tour youtube clips. Even if he wasnt belting high notes, the soul and emotion in those songs sticks with people. That is why fans are so passionate about the catalog.

If it is because he doesnt want to sing anymore then we should respect that and move on, while enjoying what a great talent he was. I havent posted here much at all, but am a long time lurker (years actually). IMO SP was the greatest rock singer ever. Watching the footage from 81 proves to me just how amazing he was. No one can expect to keep that ability forever, and anyone who expects him to be flawless and able to hit the same notes is simply a fool. Having said that, Steve strikes me as a deeply emotional guy and critics will slice and dice him no matter what he does.

I know that doing r&b classics and christmas records are niche based and dont do well in the mainstream, but it would be a way for SP to dip his toe into the music business water without getting in over his head.

Release the songs on itunes or through his website. No tours, no promo. Just something to help us get reacquainted with a truly gifted artist.

Perry sings Cooke, we've done that.........Perry could get close but no way could he replicate Cooke...that guy had something so special and a voice that flowed so easily, it's pure magic. Love to hear Perry cover him in his own way. Christmas album suggestion, fuck off that's so lame.

Anyway, since I became a Journey fan I've wanted to hear The Voice belt out "O Holy Night" and "Merry Did You Know?". However, I knew that was incredibly unlikely so I thought, what about an original Christmas song? If Tom Petty can do it and still earn the respect of the music industry, why not Steve Perry?

1- His creativity is still intact, but he's unhappy with the quality of his own voice. Can't achieve what his creative ideas come up with so he'd rather not.

and/or

2- Guilt by association. He lost his mother while on tour. Even though there will always be a part of him that misses it, singing reminds him of the worst loss he ever had, making singing bittersweet for him in general.

Clear Channel More Interested In Playing Old Music Than Music By Old People

Fox 411 columnist and Jann Wenner enemy Roger Friedman is alleging that the radio monopolists at Clear Channel have flat-out told the programmers at their rock stations that they can't play tracks from Bruce Springsteen's Magic, despite the album being No. 1 on the charts last week. Songs from the Boss' vault, like "Born To Run" and "Born In The USA," are OK, and that's causing Friedman to cry ageism:

Clear Channel seems to have sent a clear message to other radio outlets that at age 58, Springsteen simply is too old to be played on rock stations. This completely absurd notion is one of many ways Clear Channel has done more to destroy the music business than downloading over the last 10 years. It's certainly what's helped create satellite radio, where Springsteen is a staple and even has his own channel on Sirius.

It's not just Springsteen. There is no sign at major radio stations of new albums by John Fogerty or Annie Lennox, either. The same stations that should be playing Santana's new singles with Chad Kroeger or Tina Turner are avoiding them, too.

Like Springsteen, these "older" artists have been relegated to something called Triple A format stations -- i.e. either college radio or small artsy stations such as WFUV in the Bronx, N.Y., which are immune from the Clear Channel virus of pre-programming and where the number of plays per song is a fraction of what it is on commercial radio.

I'd tell him not to look back.
