in order of how important they were in their day rank these groups as far as how they influenced melodic rock and what they did in terms of record sales, touring and coverage as far as how you think they did and what good they have done overall in your life....
1-journey-for me in my life and as far as what i listened to i think journey is first.plus in general i think they have sold the most albums and had the most overall influence of the groups mentioned.
2-styx-they are second for me as far as what i listened to overall plus in general they have sold a ton of records and their singles are featured regularly in movies.especially ones with adam sandler...
3-boston-i mainly listened to their first three albums.can't say there is really a bad song in the whole bunch.between 1976 and 1986 these guys ruled the airwaves and had quite a few radio hits.its sad that brad passed away because they still had good music left in them....
4-foreigner-i mainly listen to everyting from the first album through the 4 album with stuff like juke box hero and urgent.they have had great success in the 70's and 80's on the radio but from the 90's on they have had little impact but they are still a great band regardless of the health issues of some members.
5-reo speedwagon-i love stuff like roll with the changes and time for me to fly.also riding the storm out was a great one live.in the 80's they became known for their ballads which wasn't a bad thing but the more upbeat stuff was good too like don't let him go.they should have never let gary richrath go.the man is a hell of a guitar player.

Styx are second due to the fact they get a play in Adam Sandler films
REO, they're no1 then Styx followed by Journey, Boston and then Foreigner. REO have stood the test of time, a little lightweight but they're still fresh.

1.Journey-Need anyone say more???
2. REO Speedwagon-THis is my list and I love the Wagon!!!!
3. Boston-Classic rock and a unique sound that is impossible to recreate.
4. STYX-Vocally DDY is a madman. And how can you overlook Tommy Shaws wondeful harmonic voice?
5. Foreigner- A legendary band and some of tbhe biggest hits in classic rock. Excellent song writers.
6. The Cars--I added this one because I LOVE these guys sound. When you hear a Cars tune you immediately recognize it even before the vocals start.
7. Survivor- Songs you sing along to when your alone and traveling at night.
8. The Outfield-OK, I know it was just 5 bands but I love these little poppy bastards. Their music is extremely feel good!

1. Journey - Perry's voice makes nobody as close second!
2. Foreigner - Lots of classic tracks. Always loved Lou Gramm's voice.
3. REO - This is where it becomes tough, as I have no real attachment to any of these other bands. I slot REO number 3, just because I LOVED "High In Fidelity" when I was a kid.
4. Boston - Delp's soaring vocals got my attention on a few Boston tracks, and two of the original members of Boston grew up in my hometown and graduated from my high school, so that's a cool connection to have.
5. Survivor - I know it wasn't one of the choices, but I've never really got the whole Styx thing. I think Dennis DeYoung was a talented vocalist and I even liked some of his solo work. That said, Styx never sang anything that really got my attention!

THEN:
Journey
Styx
Foreigner
REO
Boston
Love Boston, but this is due to lack of activity and creative output, not the quality of the music. I loved all 5 of these bands.
NOW:
Styx
Foreigner
REO
Boston (w/ a dead lead singer)
Journey

I think you can set up a poll leaving Journey out since they'd get #1.
After J, Reo's my fave, Foreigner, Boston, Styx

Sticking to the "influence on Melodic Rock" scenerio, I see it this way:
Journey
Styx
Boston
Foreigner
(virtual tie between these two for number 3&4)
REO

In terms of influence on music and overall greatness:

t2. Journey
t2. Styx
4. Foreigner
5. REO Speedwagon

its tragic when you have all five of these bands who have sold a combined half a billion records in the world and not one is in the rock and roll hall of fame.fucking madonna, beastie boys, afrikka bamboota, run dmc,lou reed, blondie and shit like that can get in but not one of the great five bands such as journey, boston, styx, foreigner or speedwagon?

Lou Reed belongs in.
Boston, Styx, and Journey belong in.
Foreigner and REO Speedwagon are extremely good bands but as far as I can tell, neither have done anything that merit getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Maybe a Melodic Rock hall of fame, but not the main shindig.

Much more tragic is the fact that Deep Purple (with the most known rock guitar lick in history), Rush, Kiss, and ALICE FUCKING COOPER aren't in.
Again - FUCK THE HIPPIE ROLLING STONE WOODSTOCK ASS KISSING HALL OF FAME.
Hall and Oates anyone?

kiss has more gold albums than any group in rock history.thirty something gold albums.yep your right that hall of fame is bullshit.plus you got alice cooper who started the whole glam and image thing and influenced everyone from kiss to marlyn manson.deep purple was a damn fine band too thats still moving along forty years later.
