I'm not even going to waste my time watching it. Just tell me - any mention of all of us internet racists in the story?

Nope. Found the clip on the CNN website. Notice at the bottom of the screen it says 'weird journey'?

Found this in a December 18 transcript of Anderson Cooper's show:

And the rock band Journey has found a new lead singer on YouTube. Arnel Pineda of the Philippines was discovered by Journey's guitarist -- get this -- after watching hours and hours of clips of the guy on YouTube. The guitarist, Neal Schon, admits it took some convincing to get Pineda to believe him that he wasn't an imposter and the band really did want this guy. Only that easy.

COOPER: Was he one of those guys in the Philippine jail that were dancing to "Thriller"? Probably not.

KAYE: He might be.

COOPER: I don't think so.

I have to say after watching those youtube clips, I keep coming to the same conclusions about Arnel. First and foremost, the guy can flat out sing. His range and power are SUPERB! Jeff Scott Soto, who I am a fan of, and Steve Augeri have NOTHING on this guy, in the vocal department. That said, this guy really has ZERO stage presence. I hope the hell that they throw some stage presence lessons, to go along with the "hooked on phonics" classes that he's taking.

At this point I don't care how well they coach him to imitate Perry, it's all just disgusting to me. Any new music they do is still just a lame attempt to be something they haven't been since Perry left. At least now they're admitting they're nothing without him.

Sherrie...

I don't disagree with much of what you say. I've been saying for years that Journey will be FOREVER identified with the soaring vocals of Steve Perry! Every dope who goes on and on about how Journey existed before Perry needs a slap in the head! Sure, they existed, but NOBODY noticed! Also, the Journey that existed had NOTHING in common with the Journey we all came to know! It was the same band, in name, only! I will actually say one thing in Neal's defense...He is at least smart enough to understand that the guy singing these songs MUST have soaring vocals, something Augeri and Jeff simply didn't have. It doesn't make either one of them bad guys. It's just the reality of the situation. Even though they are clearly trying to replicate (as closely as they can) the Perry sound, there will only be one Steve Perry. There was NOBODY as good as Perry was, in his prime! Arnel can work his tail off to sound as close to Perry as possible, but he will NEVER have the presence and charisma that Perry had. Perry simply commanded the stage and cast a shadow so damn large, that it's still engulfing this band, 10 years, after his exit! I think the more Journey changes lead singers, the more impressive Perry's resume looks! It just shows what Perry did night after night, shreds the vocal chords of mere mortal men! One of these days, Neal will come to the conclusion that he will NEVER EVER EVER EVER escape the legend that is Steve Perry! As I've said before, I think Neal is an immensely talented musician, but without Perry's voice, nobody would know the guy's name!

Agreed. And this YouTube thing has made them a joke. Correction. A bigger joke.

Twenty years ago Arnel owned that stage and controlled the entire audience each and every night and I got the videos to prove it too, and not even my own mother is going to see a copy of them. Timing is completely everything sort of like when Van Halen says "Miss the beat, you lose the rhythm, and nothing falls into place." YouTube's around now and Journey was looking for a new singer. Well, Arnel finally didn't miss that beat or lose the rhythm and everything fell right into place for him now....20 years later. I only wish that this could have happened for him back then. Now we have to put up with all these yahoos who are trying to capitalize on his good fortune through the internet. They all fucking know who they are too. Trust me, they aren't any of this boards faithfuls though, they are the fly by night posters on here who make outragious claims, radical extreme statements and such and then go away for a while.

If anything is going to ruin what Arnel's got going on now, it's going to be these fuckers who are getting in the way and clogging up forums with bullshit drama in the form of claims, blames, and games. The strongest weapon these idiots are using is getting fans who are open minded to get pissed off because of hearing all this racist blame horseshit and next thing you know, that run of the mill Journey fan is so fucking pissed off at the entire deal, they won't give the new album a decent fighting chance because they are sick and tired of hearing these extremist Arnel fans calling everyone racist. I run across any of these motherfuckers and I guarantee I'll accommodate them by breaking my foot clean off at the ankle in their ass for starters.

It's one thing to be in Arnel's corner like I am. But it's completely another thing to go too fucking far with it.

Wasn't Neal and Jon's whole reason for picking Augeri was because they thought he sounded somewhat like Perry? I'm pretty sure I heard one, if not both of them say something to that effect, publically, when Augeri was brought into the band. Now, for what it's worth, I never thought Augeri sounded much like Perry. I thought Augeri was a good singer, but he simply couldn't come close to hitting the notes Perry hit. I guess it really shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone that Neal and Jon would try to find a Perry-sounding clone. Jon has made comments about getting closer to their "legacy" sound, and that can only mean one thing, when translated...PERRY!!!!!! I think they both thought Jeff was too far of a deviation from that signature sound, and that's why they went searching for a new hired hand!

actually, IIRC, it was neal that said Augeri could pull off a 'rocked out Journey' I don't think the 'uncanny similarity' was a talking point for them...there was a whole lot of talk about 'new direction', 'moving forward'....however, there was that one stupid 'perry with a perm' comment from the dweeb behind the kit....I could tear out the sphincter of the producers of the BTM for allowing that idiocy through (but cutting 11/12's of Herbie's interview)...

Who gives a rat's ass about stage presence. When he starts singing Faithfully, Open Arms, etc, the chicks will melt, plain and simple. And seriously, do we really think he sounds EXACTLY like Perry? Cmon!!!! It's not even close, Arnel has a much more raw, powerful sound, where Perry was much more relaxed, softer, especially on the higher notes. Arnel is a gifted singer, no one who enjoys "melodic rock" can deny that. And as far as "melodic rock" goes, he just might be the best singer in this category in a long time.

Arnel sings with his heart
He has a great voice

Close your eyes
You can see Steve in him
How vunerable & shy he was in the beginning.
Just a man with a voice inside that wanted to be heard

Come on give the guy a chance
This is his time in the spotlight
It doesn't happen to us very often
So let him enjoy the ride.

I'm not sure I even understand your response to me. First and foremost, I'm quite sure that I went out of my way to say that this guy has a SUPERB voice, period, end of story! I'm also pretty sure that I never once said he sounded like Steve Perry! As for his stage presence, I obviously wasn't referring to tracks like "Faithfully", and that suckass song "Open Arms". Believe it or not, I'm actually intelligent enough to figure out that stage presence means nothing on a power ballad! I was obviously referring to the more up-tempo tracks in Journey's catalog! If you think a guy standing in one place on the stage, like his feet are stuck in cement is okay, then more power to you. I simply pointed out that in the videos I have seen of Arnel, he doesn't move around very much and certainly doesn't work a crowd the way I saw Perry work a crowd. I think ANY lead singer needs to move around a stage, if for no other reason, than to at least look comfortable up there!
