i may be the only one that likes these 2 tunes just as they are.. the Box Set came out right in the middle of a time where guitar was being taken to another level..the Satch thing was happening big,, and the guitar work on this song is just perfect...

if there were vocals then all the cool riffs would have been cut....

DO NOT listen to this in your car.. you just cant slow down.. 8)

"With a Tear" and "Into Your Arms" are both better without vocals.

Perry doesn't need to be stamped onto every Journey song to make it good. Sometimes not having him all over the place, suits the song much better, and makes it work.

I agree with you guys..I could just see it being an awesome song with the vocals too.

that version WITH perry noodling around with lyrics is great too.. you can just see it building into another massive tune..

but you listen to it.. then listen to what perry was working on with Against the Wall,, well, they are even close at all.. strange..

TOTALLY love this song without any lyrics. It's so Satriani-esque...
The guitar line flows so smoothly,it just speaks better than any words. It's that kind of a song.
And I say this being a complete loon for Perry's voice. :)

Agree, pure Schon/Cain Journey magic AS ARE.

And for those that lament the absence of vocals, the dirty end of the stick points towards the turkey coop kid.

I'm sorry, but the version of "With a Tear" with Perry vocals makes me cry. And not in any kind of good way. Sure, it was a demo, but his singing drowned out the groovy music going on and ruined it. The lyrics, too, that were being cooked up (seemingly on the fly, on the spot) for that song would've been among Journey's worst.

Ever wondered why didn't he record vocals for those?Maybe he thought they were perfect without a vocal line.SP is not stupid, you know?

While we're at it, here's "With A Tear"

No way this one would be better with vocals. Love it as is.

I like playing these back to back.

Yea, very perry-like sentiments there.

Mr "Don't crack stone, do whatever you want, with whoever you want and call it what you want but leave Journey alone (an actual quote, remember)" saying what they did was better off without his graces.

It's unfair to judge a song in such an early development stage. This was their creative process for molding and shaping melodies and lyrics around instrumental riffs. I'm sure it's how every song they've made was developed. Like you said, the words were obviously ad-libbed while searching for a fit. I think the melodies were just as ad-libbed. If you heard the one hour demo of "missing you" you can hear how Perry was messing with melodies and changing lyrics in the same way.

I disagree that this song would have been one of Journey's worst. The chemistry was still there even in this different direction. I think it would be different for sure, but I liked where Perry was heading with it. We were just privy to Perry's process on with a tear and I'm pretty sure the final would have progressed much further than this version (in a good way).

It's a great tune for sure. No doubt it would have changed quite a bit to allow room for vocals. My only complaint with this version is I miss Smitty in the mix. He added so much to their sound.

Steve Perry would never think that. Nor should he. Those songs suck compared to what they could have been with a "voice." Let's leave the instrumentals for The Blue Man Group.

Hey, D-Head without those instrumentals, there would've been no Journey and perry'd still be getting splinters from rewiring the coop fence.

Nope. His "journey" would have just been delayed a bit. Maybe he'd be fronting a fag band like Survivor instead. Come to think of it, maybe that song was better without lyrics.    :P :P

Only someone who thinks Augeri is a better singer than Perry would make such a silly statement.

Perry's demo was making the rounds when it fell in Herbie's lap. He wasn't the only guy who heard it and wasn't the only guy impressed with it. He was just the first guy to jump on it. No way Perry stayed on the Turkey farm and no way Journey would have continued let alone broken out as the hit they became without him. 8)

To me it has that "Gloria" tune feel.

I can see adding lyrics to it & Steve could pull it off
but it's a bit insipidly limp...

What, with all that legendary perry stick-to-itiveness, right?
One setback and he torpedoed The Alien Project, Double H had to force him to keep w/ the Journey tryouts, he short-circuited no fewer than 3 major tours over his halting career... the guy was a crybaby who had to have his ass wiped all the time.

:!:  Dude, his bass player, someone he was close to, died! Try a little abstract thought here, if you can.

See, unlike you, that's how human beings react to an emotional loss. It affect them on a deep enough level and sometimes, it stops them in their tracks.

What you as a surfacey shallow person :D doesn't seem to get is the relationship between Perry the "crybaby" and Perry the singer/songwriter. The thing that makes him a crybaby as you put it, is the same thing that allows him to sing with his unique emotional depth. Tapping that emotional space isn't easy and it comes with a price. It takes work to do it and it can burn you out. That's a big part of the reason for his lack of "stick-to-itiveness". I wish the guy would sing again, but I also understand where he's coming from.

Anyone who can't tell the difference between Survivor and Journey wouldn't get that so...

Give us a break will you, Story Susie?

All that heart and emotion from an individual who's own fans crow about all the money he allegedly has from bending Schon/Cain over a barrel for all these years because of his brilliant cutthroat business accumen.

...sigh... As usual, you're equating two separate issues to somehow support your overall position, shallow Pa(L).

First off, being an emotional person doesn't make you a saint. It means you're an emotional person and more often than not, your emotional reactions affect your behavior and your choices. Tapping that emotional space and channeling it into your artistic endeavors takes talent. That's what was being discussed. Often the same thing it takes to yield superior quality in the artistic endeavors has its drawbacks elsewhere in life.

So about the whole separate issue money thing:

I don't blame Perry one bit for pulling in a check from the band he made a success, touring the songs he not only originated vocally but co-wrote and sure as hell made famous. Song writers get royalties from songs they don't even sing. If Journey wants to tour the greatest hits then Perry should see a piece of that.

Schon/Cain/Ross are responsible for themselves. They made plenty of money with Perry in Journey. What they did with that money is their problem. Herbie made just as much money as all of them. He had an equal share in the band as if he was the 6th member, but he was smart with his money.

If Schon and Cain couldn't succeed on their own without Perry, that's not his fault. I say this as a guy who wishes he never left and would love to see him return, but you know what? I don't have to walk in his shoes. It's his life, not mine and he doesn't owe me anything.

Stick that in your crack pipe and smoke it mah brutha from anotha motha! 8)

Schon/Cain had as many platinum projects outside Journey as perry did, Mr "NoOne."

Also, that last line is an utter disgrace it's so bad.

Great instrumental...sounds like it could have been on ROR. Not sure if lyrics were meant for it, it doesn't seem like it.
