Aw, c'mon Deano...Nazareth is the shit, man. I've seen 'em a few times, long after their heyday, in clubs here in San Diego.
Me and a buddy shared a "spliff" (as they called it) and some Coronas with singer Dan McCafferty and drummer Darrell Sweet (who passed away a awhile back) a few years back in the tiny backstage dressing room at the Bacchanal, a long-gone but once-vital concert club here that was a part of my regular "beat" when I first started out writing about music back in the mid-80's.
We were eventually joined by three or four other fans, and the club's staff literally had to throw us all out after we started singing some really raunchy Scottish drinking songs under the direction of Sweet, who, like any drummer worth his salt, was the official comedian of the band.
Last time I saw 'em was at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip, not too long before Sweet passed away. While my friend and I were visiting with the band up in the Foundations Room after the show, Dan Aykroyd came up and introduced himself to us all.
Fun times indeed. Nowadays, only McCafferty and bassist Pete Agnew remain from the original lineup; Agnew's son Lee plays drums, and Jimmy Murrison now fills the shoes of departed original guitarist Manny Charlton.
If they add a date near here, I'll go, for sure.
