Tyketto's "Shine" With Augeri

Last night had a friend share with me the "Shine" album from Tyketto which was (for that album at least) fronted by Steve Augeri. INTERESTING....in that setting, he doesn't sound like he would be a logical "steve perry with a perm" stand-in that Deen called him on BTM.

Anyone heard it besides me? Thoughts?

The "Shine" album rocks. While Augeri is not the singer that Vaughn was, he does well.

augeri's "tyketto" is different from vaughn's. it's a great cd. i believe dave (conversation) talks about "raw thigh" being one of his favorite tunes.

"wild on the run" from tall stories is where augeri was compared to perry, but i don't hear it, i think it the harmonies on that song thatmade people think it.

Yes, "Rawthigh" is a great tune, as is "Radio Mary", "Let it Go", and "Long Cold Winter".

I'll have to pull it out - it's been awhile since I've heard it. It's weird, I actually came to appreciate SA by listening to his pre-Journey stuff before I heard him with Journey. Sort of got a perspective on him first and it made it easier to see him as Journey's lead singer. Believe me, I was NOT ready to do that back in the day.

I tried the same thing with AP, finding older, non-Journey material, songs, etc, but his time it didn't work.

(JSS was the odd one out - just saw him in person, had no idea what he sounded like before the Journey concert!)

That's putting it mildly. There are interviews where it was revealed that it was just supposed to be a new band, and the only way they were going to get a record deal was by using the Tyketto name. Nothing wrong with the cd itself, but they would have worked better going under a different name, since it sounds nothing like "Tyketto".

the ironic part of it all is that Augeri had a lot more trouble covering Danny Vaughn than he did with Perry. Talk about one underrated singer...

because danny has a very unique voice. but augeri sang the songs his way. i love both versions of seasons.

Since we're talking Augeri here, I just found this on YouTube today. A Tall Stories Demo from 1990. The quality doesn't seem too good. Never heard this before, though I presume some of you may already have it.

Shine is great.
Augeri's vocals are less polished than his work with either Tall Stories or Journey.
He throws himself into each song and let's it all hang out - flaws and all.
Unlike other works, silky AOR high notes are not the goal here.

For an example, listen to "Better Together" on 'Generations'.

I liked Shine, I like Steve Augeri, and was glad he kept Tyketto goin for awhile- Unfortunately- like his predocesser in Journey- his Tyketo predoceser , Danny Vaughn is extremeley powerful -The only to vocalist in MR that can make my head spin other than JSS and Steve Perry is Danny Vaughn. When Danny did an acoustic opening for Journey last year, I was totally floored by what that voice could do . Its hard to compare Augeri to that much the same way it is difficult to compare him to Perry.

Steve Augeri sounded great with Tall Stories- his music, his best range - that Album is one of my favorites. If only he could have made a living doing his own stuff - and hopefully this Tall Stories work which comes out this year sell well - after all hes a class act and deserves it.
