Vermont Town Votes on Bush 'Indictment'
By JOHN CURRAN – 6 hours ago

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) — Voters in this southern Vermont town were deciding Tuesday whether to approve a measure calling for the indictment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney on charges of violating the Constitution.

The symbolic article seeks to have police arrest Bush and Cheney if they ever visit Brattleboro or to extradite them for prosecution elsewhere — if they're not impeached first.

"Our town attorney has no legal authority to draw up any papers to allow our police officers to do so," said Town Clerk Annette Cappy, "but the gentleman who initiated the petition got the signatures (and) wanted it on the ballot to make a statement."

A steady stream of voters paraded into the Brattleboro Union High School gym to cast their ballots on a day when school board elections and Vermont's presidential primary were also on the slate.

Organizers of the indictment campaign were frustrated that the printed ballot ended up relegating the Bush-Cheney indictment article to the back side, which they said would cause some people to miss it.

The 8-by-14-inch yellow cardboard ballot listed the offices and candidates in the local election on one side, and at the bottom in block letters "Turn Ballot Over and Continue Voting."

"Turn Over Ballot and Indict Bush," read a 3-by-4-foot handmade picket sign carried by Kurt Daims, 54, who organized the petition drive and stood outside the school Tuesday.

Voters interviewed after casting ballots said they saw the article as an opportunity to express their frustration over the war in Iraq and Bush's tenure in general.

"I realize it's an extreme thing to do, and really silly in a way," said Robert George, 74, a retired photographer. "But I'm really angry about us getting involved in the war in Iraq and him (Bush) disrespecting the will of the people."

Ian Kelley, 41, a radio DJ, said he didn't vote on the article.

"It's not a good reflection on the town," he said. "Do I like either of them and would I vote for them? No. But I don't think it's cause to arrest them."

Barbara Southworth, a 66-year-old nurse, said she would have voted against it.

"I forgot to vote because it was on the flip side," she said.

In Marlboro, Bush-Cheney indictment passes in non-binding floor vote
Associated Press - March 4, 2008 6:05 PM ET

MARLBORO, Vt. (AP) - The focus was in Brattleboro, but when it came time for Town Meeting, another town beat Brattleboro to the punch in calling for the indictment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

In a non-binding floor vote, residents of the southern Vermont town of 978 people approved an article that calls for Bush and Cheney to be arrested for crimes against the Constitution.

The vote was 43 for, 25 against and three abstentions.

Town Clerk Nora Wilson says the measure, which was introduced from the floor under "other business," isn't binding since it didn't appear on the warning for the meeting.

In Brattleboro, voting goes until 7 p.m., so it's not known yet whether the article was passed there.

The article read: "Shall the Selectboard instruct the Town Attorney to draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution, and publish said indictments for consideration by other authorities and shall it be the law of the town of Marlboro that law enforcement agencies hired by the Town of Marlboro, pursuant to the above-mentioned indictments, arrest and detain George Bush and Richard Cheney in Marlboro if they are not duly impeached, and prosecute or extradite them to other authorities that may reasonably contend to prosecute them?"

How stupid are these people anyway? I'm glad all of the problems of Vermont have been solved and they have time to waste making irrelevant "statements".

I think Berkeley, Santa Cruz and every other hippy, Berkenstock wearing loser town has done the same thing.

I think they should take the vote nationwide and remove the bums. If Bill Clinton got impeached for getting a hummer, surely Bush and Cheney should be impeached for murdering thousands of soldiers and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens in a war that should never have been waged against a country that posed absolutely no threat to us.

2009 can't get here fast enough.

He didn't get impeached for getting a hummer. He got impeached for LYING TO A GRAND JURY.

Yeah, impeach them for carrying out constitutional executive powers and doing what Clinton said needed to be done.

Death is always the answer.
Kill someone. Kill a career. Kill something!

Extremists want to take your life.
People that feel offended want you fired.
Political opposites want you impeached.

I'm offended. Off with their heads!
I'm offended! Fire them!
What's the worst we can do to someone or something? KILL.

Why is that always the answer?

Sounds like federalism in action to me.
Wait - let me guess. Modern day Conservatives now have a problem with that?

I got a kick out of this comment, considering approximately 70% of "the people" were for the war when it began.

Upholding the Constitution, if only in empty gesture, is never a waste.

Furthermore, I wasn't aware you were a Vermont resident, Dave.
Just what the fuck do u care how those syrup guzzlers spend their money?

Because the overwhelming majority of the "liberal media", including the NY Times, fed the populace nothing but lies.

Upholding the Constitution my ass. They have neither the authority nor the wherewithal to follow through on this.

Yet it was ok for Kenneth Starr to spend 55 million dollars on a Hummer.

Bush and Cheney should be in jail.

No, but as a self-styled "Conservative" you should have a deep reverence for federalism, and the the rights of states to make their own laws.
Most of you assholes don't even understand the very political lens which supposedly informs your world view.
You're just Bush whores.

If they want to make their own laws fine but how about actually making laws that can actually accomplish something? WASTE...OF...TIME.

Yeah, I know. If you agree with Bush on just one issue, that makes you a Bush whore no matter how often you disagree with him. Seems like liberals like yourself forget how to read and/or understand English when someone agrees with the guy in even the smallest way. Get off your self-made pedestal.

Continued tax cuts for the uber-wealthy? Check.
Unjustified imperialist war without end? Check.
Stem cell research obstruction? Check.
And it goes on and on....

You do not agree with Bush on one singular issue. You agree with him on ALL of them. Even ones yet conjured by the twisted machinations of his crack-addled brain. In fact, during his years in office, Bush delivered a veritable Conservative Christmas wishlist, and yet still u bitch and wail. If its not Clinton's fault, it's the resident Dem congress with the slightest of hair's breadth majorities. Face it: Conservatism has failed.

Increasingly, that's the platform of the modern Conservative movement.
Just the other day there was a "conservative" on here, praising no-bid billion dollar giveaway contracts to Haliburton.

So much for freedom of speech, huh? Yeah, I know. That's something that liberals aren't all that enthralled with, either.

Continued tax cuts for the uber-wealthy? Check.

Uncheck. I support the fair tax, which would apply the SAME tax to EVERYONE, regardless of financial status

Unjustified imperialist war without end? Check.

Uncheck. Let's see how you do on the next one...

Stem cell research obstruction? Check.

Uncheck. Last I checked, stem cell research under Bush was at an all-time high. Besides that, Bush merely vetoed additional federal funding of fetal stem cells and did not obstruct private industry from doing so.

You do not agree with Bush on one singular issue. You agree with him on ALL of them. Even ones yet conjured by the twisted machinations of his crack-addled brain. You mean Bill Clinton, whom Alan Greenspan proclaimed as the "the best Republican president we've had in a while."
Let's see...

-De-regulation of electrical industry.
-Failed attempt to privatize soc. security.
-Telecomm Act. of 1996
-NAFTA

.....none of the above are liberal in spirit or effect. I have said on here many times that the Clintons are not liberals. At best they are Reagan-lite.

BTW...Voicing one's displeasure against something in no way infers that I believe states should not be able to make their own laws. This is the same kind of garbage thinking that says "Bush lied" but all the libs who trumpeted the same things before the war, and some who did so even more forcefully, i.e. Clinton and Kerry, did not lie but were misled because "Bush lied".
