As a drummer I can tell you without a doubt that Neil Peart will win this... I voted for smith even though I am a peart fan because I know that on a technical level smith is way better. However if you think about it how many casual listeners remember how drum fills in Journey songs went ? Not many. I bet tons of people know the big section in tom sawyer however... Smitty is awesome but more subtle. Peart is awesome and its more obvious to the layman...

Yep, that's the way it'll go down. I too will continue to vote for SS because he's the shit. I do love to watch NP play though. Nobody has a better economy of motion than he does to be getting so much done.

Just curious - where are all these voting contests coming from? Seems like contests for best guitarist, vocalist, drummer, etc. are springing up all over the place...

Smitty is the best drummer Journey ever had...But how about Vinnie Colaiuta, or maybe Gavin Harrison...Peart is a GREAT drummer, but he is also greatly overrated.

There was an option to submit suggestions for weeks, which I use to enter Jeff Porcaro.

Can't believe I didn't mention Jeff - however, I think he's really in his own class, altogether.

For as much as I love Smith (probably the understatement of the year), I'd have to say that he wouldn't, and probably shouldn't win Best Rock Drummer.

Best overall? Hands-down. Best fusion jazz drummer? Abso-freakin'-lutely. Rock, however, is no longer his forté. For as long as he's been playing professionally, he only has about 8 years of solid "rock" drumming under his belt. He even said that the studio engineers had to boost the bass drum during the Evolution recording sessions, because he was still in jazz mode and was too top-heavy on the set. While what he did for Journey was very influential and can't be duplicated, I'm not so sure it will be acknowledged as the "best" rock drumming.

Similar thoughts for Peart. Killer rock drummer, but his jazz playing on the Buddy Rich tribute CD (that he also produced) was far from impressive. He can't swing for shit.

My vote for rock drummer goes to Tom Major of Entrain. Never heard of them? Killer rhythm section. Check 'em out!

Gavin Harrison should be on that list. The guy is off the damn hook good. I sat Porcupine Tree last summer. Amazing show...

I haven't looked at this vote yet, but I bet Lars is up there. Mike Portney too. (yuck on both)

Actually, for 'rock' drumming - I would say Deen is the epitome of that... His playing on the Chili show blew me away, very impressed.

Smitty though, was the 'fusion' groove / rock guy and THE drummer for Jounry. Just something about the band between 78 and 83.

Mike Portnoy is sick... too wankish at times but still a very good drummer.

Gavin Harrison is complex without being too much to handle. Amazing...

Carl Palmer is last and Tico Torres is in the Top 4.

I don't think I've ever seen Bon Jovi's drummer in any top 500 list, let alone a top 10 or whatever this is.

Just the good ones. I only have one book that you might consider 'not good', and that's Private Parts by Howard Stern.

I'm sure you already know about it, but for those that don't, look at all the people he's played drums for. Pretty damn impressive.

Are you kidding me?? Geeze...go back and listen to the Captured drum solo...do you know what's going on there? And yes, there's an amazing groove throughout the complexity.
