Brett Favre said something during his press conference today that really made me think. Brett said,sure he could play for 3 hours on Sunday,but the preparation to get to that point took a toll on him and he couldn't do it anymore..He was spent after all this time,mentally he just couldn't do it..Did he love playing ,yes and he said he still did,but it was over..I think Perry did the same thing..He got spent..He did it for so long that he just wanted out..Sure he dables here and there with music,but he knows if he does another album he can't half ass it..That's what Brett said..He said he has to go all the way or nothing,and he finally feels like he can't go all the way anymore. I just think Perry went through the same thing.. He just retired without the press conference..

Yeah, it's great to go out on top. However, choose to end it. Don't put any one on hold. Favre announced it now, rather than in August.
There's something to be said for structure. Perry didn't have it, and those that depended on it had to wait.
People can only wait as long as they personally deem necessary...especially artists that love to play live. And when you bring the business aspect of it into view, it only makes sense to move on however you best see fit.

Maybe Augeri wasn't the best choice - maybe AP isn't either - but just like the NFL will never sit still, the drivers of Journey's music can't sit still either. So they make their best immediate choices and do the best they can.

We all can 'arm chair quarterback' any decision to death. But the truth is, we're not the players...not the coaches...or the owners.

Again, good analogy. Makes us all think.

I think J69's analogy is spot on for how it is now (at present) for SP. It is easy for us, the Journey diehards, to take their entire history, capsulize different time frames and talk like it's all the same for the guys. We were not there during TBF, we can only speculate the tremendous pressures put on SP to tour. Maybe it was his hip, maybe it was his voice, either way he was not up to it. Yes, Steve told the guys to go tour without him but don't call it Journey. Maybe he was relating to Bad English and that they would get together again when he's healthy.

Let's think back to ROR. Ross and Smitty were let go, but the band didn't publicized that RandyJ and MBaird were their replacements, did they? No, they were just hired hands for the tour. So, why couldn't SA be just a hired hand for the TBF tour, if they felt they had to go out as Journey. Instead of the ROR scenario, there was a contract drawn to severe SP's relationship. This seems pretty final, certainly not a hiatus. Maybe that's what SP meant by "don't crack the stone... don't fracture the name Journey."

Larry, I love ROR, too. It is my favorite SP/Journey album, as opposed to just Journey. Finest SP vocal performance, imo. I can see, though, why some fans turn off on it, since most of the songs are so different from what the band had done previously. For those reasons, I think ESCAPE and Frontiers are probably their pentacle. Indeed, rocknroll masterpieces.

I'm pretty sure Perry had intentions of returning to music in the few years following ROR, but as time wore on, he found his desire didn't re-ignite the way it used to and he eventually grew comfortable just being retired.

Journey would have been better served spending more time in the studios recording than touring the way they did. Now it's all they have left. Hopefully the new album with Arnel will have some semblance of the "it" factor found in the Perry/Schon/Cain chemistry.

I just thought about what Brett said and kind of saw the same thing with Perry,but Perry just didn't have a press conference..Cain said he saw Perry bleed a little bit each show..He was just getting burnt out from all the touring,packing,keeping his voice in shape..I'm sure that gets very tiring after a while..He just got to the point where he said I'm done without saying it..Kind of like when your girlfriend dumps you in her mind and doesn't tell you until you catch her with some other dude..
