Gee...wonder if the Escape/Frontiers debate sparked this poll.

You knew it was gonna happen. :)

Don't know what HH's problem was with it.

Great vocals, Neal shreds on it, Smitty's pounding, good keys and for once I can hear Ross (or is it Randy  ).

Good song.

I think Randy only played on After The Fall. I could be wrong though.

I love the "B" sides of both Escape and Frontiers.

yes. Back Talk too. one of my favorite Journey songs

This was one of my favorite songs to learn while I played with Frontiers! It's also one of the most difficult songs they have (Keyboard-wise). I love the darker chords used for this song, and I think it kicks ass! I think the darker chords work well with Perry's voice. I'm also a huge "Mother, Father" fan for the same reason. "Mother, Father" doesn't seem to go over too well for the casual listeners for some reason though. Oh well, their loss.

doesn't do much for me other than the vocals.

That would've been a great thing to have answered by HH, why / how did Randy come to be involved during the Frontier's sessions?

Yes, I love the song.
It's also the favorite song on Frontiers for a friend of mine.

I'm very happy that they did put Back Talk and Troubled Child on Frontiers from the very start. As much as I love Ask The Lonely and Only The Young, I like Back Talk and Troubled Child even better. Plus, Back Talk and Troubled Child helped give the band a little more of a hard rock edge than ATL and OTY would have.

3 reasons.

1. Perry, 2. Perry and 3. um, Perry

But you're right. HH would've given us another 2 paragraphs on the how's and why's of it.

You know, you are right about the casual listener. I was one for the first month of my Journey "discovery". Didn't care for Mother Father (the only 1 on Escape) and any of the B side songs of Frontiers (the original B side). Now, I love all the songs on both records -- even Back Talk. It has swagger, attitude, and I like Smitty's drumming on it.

Annie...you had me right up until you said "Back-talk"! I can't STAND that song, and I thought it was a rediculous song to put on the album. They could have put ANY song on there but that one, and I would have liked it better. It just seemed so far removed from a Journey song.

  I guess I'm a sucker for ANYTHING that has SP's voice on it, Jim. I think of Back Talk as Journey's rap song. Most people hate that reggae song on TBF, too. But I love how SP sings it like "baby talk", and Neal does some nice guitar playing.

Is that right? Are you sure about that, Deano? They never played Troubled Child in concert? I have quite a few Frontiers boots. I could have sworn I heard it played in at least one of them. Will have to check this out.

How'd you get a rise out of Andrew?

As for TC, great studio cut but don't think they could pull this one off live. Song topic is a downer for a show.

Nope. Dean's right. That's the only one to have never been played live. Even Back Talk and Frontiers were...but not TC.

hmm, interesting. And they didn't play it because of the song topic?

Now the reason WHY they've never played it is beyond me. Even during the Augeri years it was never played. Still don't know why...it's a great song.

There's a couple reason's, I see why Troubled Child wasn't played live...
First it's a very strenuous song to sing....the difficulty of the song and long held notes...takes a lot out of the singer, although I think Perry could have done it with no problem...so I think the reason is both acoustic and electric guitar are played...don't know if Neal played both parts in the studio, but figure he did....he couldn't do it on stage because the acoustic and electric guitar overlaps.....they would had to have brought on another guitarist just for this song.

Herbie admits to playing rhythm guitar, he could have done it.

Sorry, but as big of an ego Herbie has, he's no Neal or Perry...thats why he was a manager....and maybe bitter?...Sy Klopps?...paleeeezzzee!!
