Charlton Heston, who won a best actor Oscar for his starring role in the epic Ben Hur has died, aged 84, a spokesman for the star's family has said.

Heston died on Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills with his wife Lydia at his side.

Heston also portrayed Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the 1950s and 1960s.

He stepped down as president of US gun lobby, the National Rifle Association (NRA), in 2003, citing ill-health.

He also starred in "The Omega man" which was remade into "I am Legend" as well as "Planet of the Apes".

Here is something about Heston I didn't know:

He was a high-profile supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his civil rights movement. He attended King's 1963 March on Washington and stood near the podium as King delivered his "I have a dream" speech.

Wow didn't know that either, sort of cancels out his NRA thing a bit.. Anyway, nobody or nothing can take away his great performances. R.I.P.

Wow... Charlton Heston was also one of my faves. I had the pleasure of meeting him once, and he had quite an aura of dignity and class. Very sad indeed. Michael Moore did a real cut and paste hack job on Heston in "Bowling For Columbine", and it was one of the most shameful treatments I've ever seen someone given in film.

R.I.P.....

He wasn't a typical hollywood actor, he didn't chase a persona. He was honorable
and true to his integrity, he never sold out. I love him and hope he is at peace because
I had read he was suffering from Alzheimers for many years which also took my own father, its a horrible disease.

Strange times... Last week I caught Planet of the Apes on a cable channel, and just two weeks ago, Netflix'd Soylent Green.
Charlton Heston was truly a great American. He will be missed.
Long live the NRA!
